It aims to familiarize the students with the organization of the sound system, provide knowledge and skills needed for the description and analysis of sounds in isolation and in context and for the analysis of basic relationship between speech and writing A. General information on the course (independent of a term) Short description The aim of the course is to provide students with the terminology needed for the description of the sound system of English and the key characteristics of the system in relation to varieties of English. The Standard Southern British English (SSBE) dialect is treated as the reference variety for the course and it is the segmental and suprasegmental characteristics of this variety that forms the basis of the course Entrance requirements Language proficiency in English at level B1 minimum. Objectives and final results Knowledge: After completing these classes the student: e1. has an organised general knowledge and terminology related to the description of the sound system of a language (01FA1A _W03) e2. can name, describe and place within the English sound system individual sound categories at the segment al and suprasegmental level, knows the Basic principles of the sound system and its organization 01FA1A _W13). Skills: After completing these classes the student: e1. has the skill of using the concepts related to descriptive grammar. (01FA1A _U02) B. Information on classes during (period of study) Course content The course includes the following elements: - Relationship between speech and writing in English - The description of the sound system: - vowels - consonants - syllables - The description of the organisation of the sound system - word stress - sentence stress At all levels, the importance of practical application of theoretical knowledge is stressed.
