September
1. Better Breakfast Day Breakfast is a great way to give the body the refueling it needs.
Kids who eat breakfast tend to eat healthier overall and are more likely to participate in
physical activities — two great ways to help maintain a healthy weight.

Creamy Fruit Roll-Ups: In a small bowl, mash a banana or some fresh berries. On a
whole-grain tortilla, spread a thin layer of cream cheese and top with the mashed fruit. Roll
up the tortilla and allow your child to take bites on their own, or slice into spiral rounds.
2. Blueberry Popsicle Day
http://www.marthastewart.com/313244/blueberry-pops
INGREDIENTS
~5 cups blueberries ~ 1/2 cup water
~1/2 cup sugar
~1 tablespoon lemon juice
DIRECTIONS
1. In a blender, puree blueberries with water, sugar, and fresh lemon juice. Strain mixture
through a fine-mesh sieve, pressing with a rubber spatula to release as much liquid as
possible; discard solids. Add water if needed to yield 3 cups.
2. Divide among ten 2 1/2 ounce molds; insert wooden sticks, and freeze until solid, about
3 hours (and up to 1 week). To remove, dip bottom of molds in warm water for 2 to 3
seconds.
3. Me Poem Have your child point to each body part as it is named.
I have ten tiny fingers
And ten tiny toes,
Two tiny arms
And on tiny nose.
One tiny mouth
And two tiny ears,
Two tiny eyes
For smiles and tears.
One tiny head
And two tiny feet,
One tiny chin--That’s ME!
I’m complete!
4. September is baby safety month.
Raising a bundle of joy takes care and
knowledge to ensure the first years are happy and healthy. It’s important to know how
to properly baby proof your house. Make sure you are keenly attuned when caring for
baby at all times. - See more at: http://babysafetyzone.org/hot-topics/baby-safetymonth#sthash.2CBXuCqi.dpuf

~1 English muffin or bagel, split and toasted
~ 4 teaspoons pizza sauce or tomato puree
~3 tablespoons shredded part- skim mozzarella cheese
What you do: Place English muffins on clean work surface. Spread each toasted muffin with 2
teaspoons pizza sauce and 1-1/2 tablespoons cheese. Spread with topping choices. Place on
baking sheet or place in toaster oven and bake at 350°F, about 10 minutes or until hot and
cheese has melted.
6. Give your child a bucket of water and a large paint brush to
“paint” the house. This activity works on large muscle
development.
7. Labor Day The first Labor Day parade was held on September 5, 1882 in New York
City. Since so many people participated in the events on that day, officials decided to
honor workers every year. On June 28, 1894 President Grover Cleveland officially
proclaimed the first Monday in September as Labor Day. Talk to your child about
different jobs. You may even have them play dress up.

Firefighter Ladder and Hose
You will need: ~ six- inch pretzel sticks ~ small pretzel sticks ~ Spreadable Cream Cheese
~ Red Licorice strings
~ Large Paper Plate
Directions: To make the long sides of the ladder, lay two six-inch pretzel sticks on a plate so
they are about two inches apart. Get five small pretzels to make the rungs of the ladder. Dip
each end of the small pretzel sticks in the cream cheese. Lay them perpendicular on the long
pretzels. To make the firefighter hose, get on string of licorice. Wrap the licorice around two
fingers to make a coil. Lay the hose beside the ladder. Be aware of children who have food
allergies

9. Teddy Bear Day Teddy bears are named after US President Theodore "Teddy"
Roosevelt. The name came about after a 1902 hunting expedition. The hunt had
found no game, so at the end of the day someone brought out a baby bear and
suggested that Roosevelt might like to shoot it instead. Roosevelt understandably
felt that this was not exactly sporting and refused. The incident was illustrated in
a newspaper cartoon entitled "Drawing the Line" - which also referred to the
WV Birth to Three, Region 2, 912 Market Street, Parkersburg WV 26101 (304) 485-2000
political situation at the time. An enterprising New York toymaker saw an
opportunity and brought out a cute stuffed bear named "Teddy's Bear".
Teddy Bear Wagon First get a box that the teddy bear will fit into. Have the child decorate as
desired. When dry, poke a hole big enough to thread a piece of yarn through. Tie a piece of
yarn, just long enough for the child to hold, while the box rests on the floor. Let the child pull
the wagon around with their Teddy Bear.
Teddy Bear Picnic Have a picnic on the floor or outside with your child’s
favorite teddy bear. You can either pretend to eat, or have snack or
lunch picnic style.
Teddy Bear Parade Have your child walk around with their t eddy
bear's in their wagon, and have a parade. Play marching music.
Toast Bear Toast a piece of bread, butter it, sprinkle with cinnamon
sugar, add banana slices and raisins

Elias Howe on this day in 1846 patented a sewing machine
with unique ideas. Put food coloring in a Ziploc bag with really big (uncooked)
pasta noodles, then shake. Lay the shells out in the sun to dry and use yarn and large,
plastic kid needles for stringing (buy needles in craft supply stores
or online) . You can also just string the noodles on the yarn. This
helps kids learn to hold and direct the needle, and it’s fun

Patriot Day Add blueberries, strawberries and a dab of whip cream to your
child’s waffles or pancakes to help start the day in memory of patriot day.
12.
Chocolate Milkshake Day Remember not to give milkshakes
to a baby who isn’t weaned. During weaning, as you introduce each fruit, you
can also whizz them up with milk to make a simple shake, but don’t add any of the other
extras, especially the powders as these would be too strong for a baby’s little tummy.
Wait until they are older toddlers before adding these.

On this day in 1928 Mickey Mouse was introduced to the
world in a cartoon titled Steamboat Willie. This film was the first
cartoon to use sound. You will need a 10.5 oz bag of mini
marshmallows, 3 tablespoons of margarine plus some for greasing the
pan, and 5 cups of Cheerios. Put the marshmallows and margarine in a
large microwave safe bowl and microwave on high for 1 minute, stir, and
then 1 more minute. Mix into the Cheerios and spread into greased 13x9
inch baking pan. Flatten down with greased hands and refrigerate for
about an hour. After about an hour, using a greased cookie cutter, cut
out shapes, pulling away the excess. Put the cut-outs on waxed paper in
the freezer for about 15 minutes to stiffen up. Prepare baking sheet with waxed paper
(to catch excess chocolate) and place cooling rack over the top. Melt Chocolate
Candiquik according to package instructions, about 1 block per cut out. Working one at
a time, spoon chocolate over the cut-out spreading it with the back of spoon and add
sprinkles. When finished, refrigerate for about 1/2 hour to set
up.

Miniature Golf Day
BUILD AN INDOOR MINIATURE GOLF COURSE
Need: Golf clubs (or sponge and yardstick), golf ball or rubber ball, masking tape, glue, scissors,
markers, shoe box. cardboard, Coffee can. Use your own clubs, or use masking tape to adhere
a new sponge to a yardstick. Build your course using the coffee can for the final hole. Take
turns playing your way through your course. Save your obstacles for the next rainy/snowy day.
IDEAS FOR GOLF COURSE For a tunnel, cut out the bottom of an empty oatmeal box, and place
the box on its side. To make a house, turn a shoe box upside down and cut out an entrance
from one end, and the exit from the other end. Fold a piece of cardboard in half and set it up
like a tent for the ball to go through. Place two or three Frisbees on the floor to form a curved
fairway for the ball to go through. Make a ramp by scoring (run one point of the scissors in a
WV Birth to Three, Region 2, 912 Market Street, Parkersburg WV 26101 (304) 485-2000
straight line without cutting all the way through) a piece of cardboard twice. Bend slightly at
each score mark to create a upside, flat, and downside to your ramp. Put some books under the
center section for support. For a straight fairway, use two rows of building blocks. Make a sand
trap from a hula hoop. For a pipe use paper and tape it. Put a chair or stool in the center of the
room for the ball to go under. Source: creativekidsathome.com

Autumn Begins Leaf Cookies
Play this game as a family. PLAY DOGGIE, DOGGIE, WHERE'S
YOUR BONE? Pick a family member to play the part of the dog. He or she sits on a chair
with an object under it (to represent the bone) with their back to the group. While the
dog is turned around with his or her eyes closed, someone steals the bone and hide it
somewhere on his person. Then everyone sings: Doggy, Doggy, where's your bone?
Somebody's stole it from your home. Guess who it might be. The dog has three chances
to guess who took it. If the dog guesses right, he gets to do it again. If he guesses wrong,
then the child who has the bone gets a turn as the dog.
Obtain a leaf shaped cookie cutter and
have the children help you make leaf cookies. Buy sugar cookies, cute them out, and
then decorate them with red, orange, yellow and brown frosting. Go over the fall colors
as you decorate.
