St Martin’s School
Learning Environment Policy
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that St Martin’s School learning environment is a place with
high expectations, is attractive, tidy and exciting, which children, teachers and volunteers respect
and want to learn in. More importantly, our learning environment must be purposeful, relevant and
something which the children refer to and use on a regular basis. There are three main purposes to
our learning environment:
1. To provide instructions/guidelines linked to school organisation, health and safety, behaviour,
internal consistencies.
2. To support and enable children in their learning
3. To celebrate success and learning
All staff and children at St Martin’s have their part to play to ensure our learning environment is the
best it can be. The learning environment will be monitored on a regular basis as part of the monitoring
cycle and feedback will be given. It is a fine line between developing an area that is stimulating for
children and enables their learning, and an environment that is so full that they cannot take all the
information or use it appropriately. We aim to achieve that balance. We acknowledge that the
learning environment includes the indoor and outdoor classroom.
Listed below are the learning environment expectations.
1. To provide instructions/guidelines linked to school organisation, health and safety,
behaviour, internal consistencies.
a) Fire and safety signs must be in place around the school including clear instructions on where
to evacuate (at least one sign in each room and classroom). School visitors badges will also
include this feature.
b) A first aid sign must be on the front of any first aid cupboard and there must be a list of all
the First Aiders in school.
c) Behaviour expectations must be clearly visible, including class contract and Jigsaw PSHE
rules/charter, Jigsaw piece.
d) The Year Group and name of the classteacher on an inside door and outside door.
e) Teachers desk must be clutter free and tidy.
f) An area where children can see the daily timetable (visual) or organisational calendar (age
appropriate).
g) The cloakroom is tidy and has appropriate name labels or information.
h) A worry/suggestion box available.
i) Table resources (pens/pencils etc) are organised in a tidy way which children have easy access.
j) Resources and trays in the room are correctly labelled using Comic Sans font. Storage is used
effectively and children know how to self-access resources.
k) There are effective methods of communicating with parents appropriate to the year group e.g.
extra letters on door, parent book.

resources.
m) No coffee cups left in classrooms, halls or corridors.
2. To support and enable children in their learning
a) The classroom environment (both inside and outside) must be organised and tidy.
b) Clearly labelled with a print rich environment which promotes literacy/maths development e.g.
outdoor areas labelled, numbers on wall, every opportunity for print/numbers (100 square,
number line, timestables grid, handwriting examples, RWI speed sounds).
c) An inviting and exciting book corner, which has a range of books from different genre and
aimed at the interest and reading level of the children in the class. Display and/or signs to
promote the love and value of reading.
d) High focus on Maths and English (reading and writing) within the displays.
e) Displays which children use to enable their learning and are interactive e.g. challenge wall.
f) Display of key vocabulary linked to topics.
g) Focus in the classroom on how to learn e.g. use of growth mindset language.
h) Classrooms must have a purposeful level of noise depending upon the learning.
3. To celebrate success and learning
a) Examples of children’s writing and maths.
b) An area in the class to celebrate learning and success e.g. showing achievements from outside
school.
c) Examples of children’s work from different areas of the curriculum.
Display guidelines:
a) Classteachers can decided if boards are back. If they do, please use a neutral type backing.
Boarders can be used.
b) Children’s work needs to be presented in a way that promotes care, purpose and attention.
Backing work depends upon the purpose and location of presentation.
c) All children’s learning that is displayed must have a date on and be named.
d) Displays should be changed and updated on a regular basis depending on the purpose and needs
of the learning and children.
