Notes: Cladograms

Notes:
Cladograms
SB3c. Examine the evolutionary basis of
modern classification systems.
Phylogenetics
Phylogenetics- studies the relationships among living
organisms.
It is an attempt to understand evolutionary relationships
Helps find clues as to how life has evolved.
Cladograms
Cladograms (or phylogenetic trees)- are treelike diagrams
that show evolutionary relationships.
They provide a visual that you can gather info about
ancestors and their descendents.
Cladograms
Each branch shows where a new group of organisms, called
a clade, emerged from an existing group.
Derived Characters
A derived character is a trait that arose in the common
ancestor of a particular lineage and is shared by all
members of a clade.
We find these between the nodes on a cladogram.
