September 3 Morning NO IFS OR BUTS “Tell me, O you whom I love, where you feed your flock, where you make it rest at noon. For why should I be as one who veils herself by the flocks of your companions?” (Song Solomon 1:7) It is well to be able to say of the Master (Lord/Adonai) Jesus, without any “ifs,” or “buts,” that it is “You whom I love.” Many say they hope they love Him, or they trust they love Him, yet only those with a shallow and poor experience will be content with this relationship. Christians should give no rest to their spirit until they are certain about this vital matter. We should not be satisfied with a superficial hope that Jesus loves us or with a blind trust that we love Him. The old saints did not generally speak with “buts, ifs, hopes, and trust” in this matter. They spoke positively and plainly. “I know whom I have believed,” said Paul (2nd Timothy 1:12 “For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day”). “I know that my Redeemer lives,” said Job (Job 19:25 “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and He shall stand at last on the earth”). Get positive knowledge of your love of Jesus. Do not be satisfied until you can speak of your faith in Him as a reality. Be sure, by receiving the witness of the Holy Spirit and by having His seal on your soul by faith. True love for Christ is always the work of the Holy Spirit. It can be worked in the heart only by Him. He is the efficient cause of it. The logical reason we love Jesus is found in Jesus Himself, for “He first loved us” (1st John 4:19 “We love Him because He first loved us”). Why do I love Jesus? Because He “gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20 “ I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of the strong one (God/Elohim), who loved me, and gave Himself for me”). I have life through His death and peace through His blood. “Though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor” (2 nd Corinthians 8:9 “ For you know the grace of our master (Lord/Adonai) Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich”). Why do we love Jesus? Because of His excellence. We are filled with a sense of His beauty, an admiration of His charms, and a consciousness of His infinite perfection. His goodness, greatness, and loveliness combine in one resplendent ray to enchant the soul until we exclaim, “Yes, He is altogether lovely” (Song of Solomon 5:16 “ His mouth is most sweet, yes, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem!”). Blessed love! This love binds the heart with chains softer than silk, yet stronger than steel.
