Fortunately a considerable effort over many seasons has seen the documentation of many individual, grade, team & club records. In addition, the clubs foundation in 1920 has been pieced together using local papers of the time (Hawthorn & Camberwell Citizen) and where possible pictures and memorabilia from descendants of one or two past players. We have been very fortunate to have a copy of the 1924/25 premiership photo donated to the club (refer cover), which now forms part of our historical collection in the clubrooms. By way of background, the Deepdene Cricket Club was very strongly linked to the Deepdene Congregational Church, which was once located on the north/east corner of Whitehorse Road and Leonard Street. The club began as a social team before forming in August 1921 and played in a paddock in Norbett Street, Balwyn in 1921 before finally settling at Deepdene Park in 1923 on land donated by Mr Alexander MacNiel. Deepdene Park officially opened in August 1924. The area was still developing in the 1920’s with many new estates being built in Deepdene/Balwyn yet much of the area north of Gordon Street still existed as open spaces, paddocks, chicken runs and dairies. Since its formation, the Club has continuously fielded teams in the ECA. Today the suburb and surrounding areas are well established, as is the cricket club with senior, junior and veteran’s teams as well as a vibrant “Milo Into Cricket” programme for the little tackers. At the commencement of the 1997/98 season the Deepdene and North Kew cricket clubs merged to form the Deepdene Bears Cricket Club. The history of the North Kew Cricket Club which merged with the Deepdene Cricket Club to form the Deepdene Bears Cricket Club in 2006 goes back a distance. The North Kew Cricket Club were previously called Box Hill Districts Cricket Club and were the top club in the ESCA A Grade Matting competition winning 6 premierships in 11 seasons and were based at Elgar Park in Box Hill North. In an effort to play on turf they merged with the North Kew Football Club in 1983 and moved to Stradbroke Park which was the home of the “Bears”. The wicket at Stradbroke Park was not conducive to scores above 100 and the club played off in a number of finals but only won 3 more premierships in lower grades. The club had 3 senior teams and was rebuilding with a number of junior teams but struggled offfield after the Football Club left the merger. The merger with Deepdene allowed the Club to end up with 2 premier home grounds. The club proudly displays its rich history in the club rooms at Deepdene Park. Whilst the current players and committee are custodians of the Club’s history and the masters of its destiny as we track to our Centenary year in 2020. Background 1. Throughout the season, selection is one of the most important issues, both on for individual players and the Club. In light of this, the Club has decided publish this Selection Policy (“the Policy”) in order to make the selection process more transparent and better understood by players. 2. The Policy was drafted by the Committee of season 2014/2015 in consultation with the coaches, Chairman of Selectors and the captains. In accordance with the Constitution, the Selection Committee shall be comprised of the Chairman of Selectors (appointed by the Committee) and the Captain of each team. The Chairman of Selectors will liaise closely with the Selection Committee members and the coach. 3. The Policy contains guidance on: 3.1. The objectives of selection; 3.2. The factors taken into consideration in selection decisions; 3.3. The communication of selection decisions to players; 3.4. The role of the Chairman of Selectors; 3.5. Unavailability, Subscriptions; and 3.6. Policy Amendment B. Objectives of selection 4. The objectives of selection are to balance the following needs of the Club: 4.1. To select the strongest XI for each grade of cricket of which the Club fields a team, having regard to appropriate team balance and the opportunity for all team members perform and participate; 4.2. For the Club to have regard to its future success by promoting and developing youth; and 4.3. To be fair and consistent in the treatment of players. 5. It should be recognised that on occasions these objectives may be in conflict. For example, a very talented player who does not train may not be picked in the XI in which he is obviously qualified to play. This may have the effect of not, in theory, picking the strongest XI, however, it promotes fairness in selection. Furthermore, it must be recognised that the balancing of these objectives may be different for each XI. For example, the emphasis on picking the stronger XI may be of greater focus in the 1st XI than in lower grades, where team balance, opportunity and development may be a priority. C. Factors in the selection process 6. The following are factors to be considered by the selection committee in the selection of their teams and individual players: 6.1. Ability – A player’s ability is the most important factor in determining which XI he is selected in. No one benefits by a player playing in an XI in which he is either too good or simply unable to contribute to the side. 6.2. Form and performance – It is important to note that form and performance encompasses a player’s performances over a period of matches, and not just a single performance. Also, the selection committee is entitled to consider the quality of opposition in assessing a player’s performance, along with any other relevant factors. 6.3. Practice – A player’s attendance at, and attitude during, practice are factors to consider in selection. However, this factor should not be applied blindly. For example, if a player cannot practice twice a week due to work or family commitments but can train once a week, this may not affect selection. It must be recognised that the Club is not professional. Nevertheless, if a player does have an issue regarding his practice availability, he must inform one of the coaches, his usual captain or Chairman of Selectors. 6.4. Future development/potential – Younger players who have the potential to play in higher XI’s may be given preference in selection. This doesn’t mean, however, that older players will automatically make way for younger players regardless of performance. Nevertheless, where two players have similar claims to promotion or similar arguments for demotion, preference should be given to the development of younger players. 4 6.5. Initial reason for promotion/demotion – If a player is promoted due to a series of good performances, he should be given more of an opportunity in an XI than a player who has been promoted to a team on the basis of unavailability in that XI. Similarly, if a player is demoted for poor form, then he may be required to perform better in the lower XI to gain promotion than a player who has been dropped to a lower XI after, for example, returning from an absence. 6.6. Team balance – A captain is entitled to have team balance, both in relation to the spread of batsmen and bowlers in his team, as well as the type of batsmen and bowlers in the team. Team balance may also vary between 1-day and 2-day games. 6.7. Association rules regarding selection of players and qualifications for finals. 6.8. Absence – If a player is unavailable to play because of an absence during the season, then this will be a factor counting against the player in determining where he is selected upon his return. The reason for the absence may, however, be a relevant consideration (i.e. an absence due to work or family commitments will be treated more favourably than an absence due to a holiday.) D. Communication of selection decisions 7. A player is entitled to be individually notified of the fact that he has been promoted or demoted and the reason for that decision. 8. The notification of a player’s promotion or demotion and the reason for the decision is to take place after training on a Thursday night. It is at the selection committee’s discretion as to whether this occurs just before or just after the reading out of all the teams. Under no circumstances is a player’s promotion or demotion to be communicated to anyone before this time. 9. The communication of a player’s elevation or demotion will be conveyed to the player by the coach, the captain of the team into which the player has been promoted/demoted or the Chairman of Selectors. E. Role of the Chairman of Selectors 10. The role of the Chairman of Selectors is as follows: 10.1. To chair the selection meetings; 10.2. To liaise closely with the coach regarding composition of teams 10.3. To ensure that the Policy is implemented. 10.4. To co-ordinate the availability of players from match to match. 10.5. To communicate the promotion or demotion of a player where this cannot be done by the coach or the appropriate captain. 10.6. To liaise with the Committee about any selection issues that may arise. F. Unavailability, Subscriptions 11. Subject to the Committee's discretion, players who have paid subscriptions may be favoured in selection over those who have not. 12. It is the responsibility of players to communicate unavailability for selection to the coach, his captain or the Chairman of Selectors and place the details on the unavailability list. 13. Unless there are very special circumstances, a player may not make himself unavailable for selection in a particular grade. G. Policy Amendment 14. The selection policy may be amended the Committee as circumstances require from time to time. 5 Good Sports Club As a Good Sports Club, DBCC discourages inappropriate use of alcohol, the use of tobacco and offensive behaviour of any kind. Preamble to the Laws of Cricket Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its Laws but also within the Spirit of the Game. Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to the game itself. The major responsibility for ensuring the spirit of fair play rests with the captains. 1. There are two Laws which place the responsibility for the team's conduct firmly on the captain. Responsibility of captains The captains are responsible at all times for ensuring that play is conducted within the Spirit of the Game as well as within the Laws. Player’s conduct In the event of a player failing to comply with instructions by an umpire, or criticising by word or action the decisions of an umpire, or showing dissent, or generally behaving in a manner which might bring the game into disrepute, the umpire concerned shall in the first place report the matter to the other umpire and to the player's captain, and instruct the latter to take action. 2. Fair and unfair play According to the Laws the umpires are the sole judges of fair and unfair play. The umpires may intervene at any time and it is the responsibility of the captain to take action where required. 3. The umpires are authorised to intervene in cases of: Time wasting Damaging the pitch Dangerous or unfair bowling Tampering with the ball Any other action that they consider to be unfair 4. The Spirit of the Game involves RESPECT for: Your opponents Your own captain and team The role of the umpires The game and its traditional values 5. It is against the Spirit of the Game: To dispute an umpire's decision by word, action or gesture To direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire To indulge in cheating or any sharp practice, for instance: (a) to appeal knowing that the batsman is not out (b) to advance towards an umpire in an aggressive manner when appealing (c) to seek to distract an opponent either verbally or by harassment with persistent clapping or unnecessary noise under the guise of enthusiasm and motivation of one's own side 6. Violence There is no place for any act of violence on the field of play. 7. Players Captains and umpires together set the tone for the conduct of a cricket match. Every player is expected to make an important contribution to this. Source: MCC 7 Eastern Cricket Association Inc - Code of Behaviour As part of a player and club’s registration with this association is the requirement that all clubs, their registered players and members adhere to the following Code of Behaviour ROLE OF CLUBS 1 Clubs shall exercise great care in the selection of captains. 2 Clubs shall closely monitor and fully support the efforts of captains in regard to the maintenance of the Code of Behaviour. 3 Clubs shall be responsible during matches for the maintenance of order by their members and any other person with whom a relationship of affinity exists.
