A Message From our Pastor...
Dear Friends,
Third Sunday of Easter
April 30, 2017
Dear Friends,
Without doubt, one of the most intriguing facts about the resurrection of Our Lord is that He was not
immediately recognized by the very people who had been His intimate friends. There was something
absolutely different about the appearance of Our Lord after His resurrection from the dead. He was
present in a different way than before and this raised the difficulty of recognizing the Risen Lord, even
by His closest friends. Nonetheless, St. Luke is clear that this is the same Jesus Christ who was
crucified. His disciples will see the nail marks in his hands and place their hands in his side. This is an
astounding fact. Christ was indeed present in bodily form but they did not recognize Him until He
reveals Himself. In today’s Gospel, St. Luke recounts the appearance of Our Lord to two of His
disciples as they travelled on their way to a town called Emmaus. He walked with them for several
miles but as the gospel writer tells us: “…their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.” For many
of us, it might be hard to imagine this specific scene because we might think that we would have
immediately recognized Our Lord. However, we know that His appearance had changed and they were
prevented from recognizing him. None of this is without meaning. The entire passage is a profound
catechesis of the Mass! The great sorrow of these two disciples will soon disappear as Our Lord spends
the hours of their walk to Emmaus in order to “interpret to them what referred to him in all the Scriptures.” What a profound teaching they must have heard. The Son of God reveals the entire meaning and
significance of the Scriptures. He is the fulfillment of all that “Moses and all the prophets” had spoken
about and prophesied.
The climax, however, comes when Our Lord is invited to stay with these two disciples. They sit
down together at table and Our Lord takes the bread, blesses it and breaks it before their eyes. It is
precisely at this moment that these two disciples recognize the Lord. He had just spent hours with them
explaining the scriptures but only when He “breaks the bread” do the disciples recognize Christ. This is
an exquisite exposition of the Mass. The minds of the two disciples are taken away from their mundane
concerns and enlightened by the Word of God. The very teaching of Christ opens their minds to the
truth of all of Scripture. Finally, they encounter Our Lord with full awareness in the “breaking of the
bread.” There can be no mistaking the intention of St. Luke. In the Acts of the Apostles, the author, St.
Luke himself, tells us that the earliest Church after the resurrection did precisely these things. In last
week’s liturgy, we hear that immediately after the resurrection and ascension of Our Lord the disciples
of Christ, “devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking
of bread and to the prayers.” (Acts 2:42) This is what the two disciples on the road to Emmaus
experienced. This is what we experience every time we come before Our Lord at Holy Mass. Scripture
is proclaimed and explained. We come to recognize Christ in the moment of the “breaking of bread.”
This is the Eucharist. Although the way Christ appears to us is changed from His time here on earth we
are certain that this is the same Lord who died for our sins on the cross. He is the same Lord who
walked with the disciples on the road to Emmaus. May we never forget that the encounter of Our Lord
with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus was not simply a chance happening. It was eternally
planned by Our Lord in order to confirm our faith in His resurrection and His bodily presence in the
Holy Eucharist. May we also ask Our Lord to inflame our hearts and enlighten our minds so that we too
can come to recognize Him every time He comes to us in the breaking of the bread.
In Christ,
Fr. Steven

Thank you for your very generous
donations!
In this Sunday’s Gospel, as we hear the story of the
disciples on the road to Emmaus, we also come to
know that our daily reaching out to our neighbor is our
daily walk with the risen Christ; we recognize him in others.
This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul brought the love and care of Jesus to the poor by
assisting families with food and money for rent and utilities.
Thank You!
