International Credit Union Day
Celebrates the Authentic
Difference
On October 20, 2016, credit unions around
the world will celebrate International Credit
Union Day (ICU Day). Credit unions are
not-for-profit financial cooperatives, offering
the same services as other financial
institutions, but with a people-first
philosophy. Since 1948, on the third
Thursday of every October, credit unions
have celebrated the principles that make
credit unions the best financial partners of
people all over the world. “The authentic
difference,” this year’s ICU Day theme,
zeroes in on what makes credit unions
different from banks, fintech startups and
other financial institutions—our principles.
Credit unions all over the world have
operated according to the same core
principles since the 1850s, when a group of
weary German workers, tired of being
exploited by loan sharks, formed the
world’s first credit union by banding
together to provide affordable credit to each
other.
These principles are derived from the 7
cooperative principles, shared by all
cooperatives. They are:
Democratic Control: One
member = One vote.
Whether you have $5 or
$5 million, your voice is
equal.
Open and Voluntary
Membership: Members
are connected by a bond
of association, fostering a
sense of community.
Non-Discrimination:

people of modest means.
Ongoing Education:
Credit unions prioritize
financial education for
their members,
employees, and
communities as part of
their pursuit of social
justice.
This is why we celebrate ICU Day at Via
Credit Union. We think ideas like people
before profit, social responsibility, and
financial education improve lives. It’s why
cooperative banking is a key component of
helping people in developing countries get
access to microloans, or middle-class
couples in our community receive an
affordable mortgage for their first home.
So when we wish you Happy ICU Day, know
that we’re thanking you for belonging to a
movement that’s helping your
neighbors—and people around the
world—grow and thrive and follow their
dreams.
To celebrate ICU Day, ViaCU will be

with any merchant you have authorized to

Did You Know...Retailer Data
Breaches Hurt Your Credit Union?
The news has been filled in recent years
with stories of serious data breaches at
major retailers all across the county. When
these breaches happen at retailers like
Target, Home Depot, Wendy’s, and
hundreds of smaller businesses, not only
is consumers’ account information at risk
but credit unions end up spending millions
of dollars to help their members cope with
the fallout from the retailers’ breach. In fact,
Via Credit Union has already spent over
$130,000 in 2016 responding to data
breaches. Because ViaCU is a
member-owned cooperative, these
breaches are costing you, too.
Why? Retailers are not subject to the same
federal protection standards as financial
institutions, like ViaCU. This means it’s
easier for hackers to gain access to your
credit/debit card number or other personal
data through a retailer. What makes the
situation even worse is that the retailers pay
NONE of the cost for their weak and
ineffective security measures. Credit unions
clean up the mess the retailers caused by
informing members and reissuing or
blocking credit and debit cards. If fraud
does occur, credit unions work with their
members to remove the fraudulent charges
and help members keep their hard-earned
money. It’s your money and your credit
union wants to protect it.
What can you do to help?
There are things that you can do to help
manage the risk of data breaches:
• Don’t respond to email, text, or telephone
calls asking for personal or financial
information.
• Frequently review account activity and
immediately report unauthorized
transactions.
• Place an initial fraud alert with credit
bureaus if fraud has occurred.
You also can tell Congress that it’s time to
stop the data breaches and bring retail
merchants up to the same data protection
standards as credit unions. Legislation,
called the Data Security Act, has been
introduced in Congress that would go a
long way to help stop retail merchant data
breaches. We want our senators and
representatives to support this legislation
and we would like your help encouraging
their support. The quickest way to help is to
visit http://bit.ly/stopthedatabreaches to
send an email to our senators and
representatives.
Retailers need to improve their data
security so consumers like you are
protected from identity theft and financial
fraud, and credit unions can continue to
serve members like you with affordable
financial services.
