Why did John Brown attack
Osawatomie in 1856?
He didn’t exactly attack, he
defended his town because
Osawatomie killed one of his
sons so they became a target.

• He vowed to strike terror in the
hearts of the proslavery people.
• “Bleeding Kansas,” was started
when Brown led four of his sons and
two other men.
1.They traveled along Pottawatomie
Creek.
2.They seized and killed five
supporters of slavery.
3.By the end of the bloodshed over
200 people had been killed.

John Brown to be a radical
murderer, while others
viewed him as a fighter for
the cause of freedom.

• In 1859, John Brown led 18 men on
a raid to Harpers Ferry, Virginia.
• He had the idea to seize the federal
arsenal and spark an uprising of
enslaved people, whom he would
arm with the weapons he captured.
• During the raid, 10 of his men were
killed and Brown was tried and
found guilty of murder.
• John Brown was sentenced to hang
on December 2, 1859.

Summary
John Brown grew up knowing what was
right and wrong. His beliefs were to free
all slaves. Slaves were human also and
didn’t deserve to be slaves. He led
groups to punish and kill the slave
holders and led groups to help free
most slaves. John Brown’s life ended
doing what was true to his
heart…freeing slaves.
