Section #1: Japanese Attack Manchuria in China After World War I, the League of Nations was created. It was an organization designed to prevent future world wars. In 1931, the Japanese invaded Manchuria, which is a part of China (see the map). Manchuria has a lot of coal and iron. When Japan took over Manchuria, many of the League of Nations members protested, but Japan ignored the protests. Instead, the Japanese left the League of Nations. In 1937, a full blown war between China and Japan was about to start. The Chinese army, was not going to be a match for the better training and better weapons of the Japanese invaders. Many major Chinese cities would likely fall under Japanese control and tens of thousands of captured Chinese soldiers and civilians would be killed. 1. What might happen if League of Nations does not respond to this invasion? 2. Why might the League of Nations choose NOT to respond to the invasion? 3. Should the League of Nations appease Japan? A) Yes, the League of Nations should appease the Japanese and let the Japanese take over China. B) No, the League of Nations should NOT appease the Japanese. The League of Nations should try to stop the Japanese from conquering China. 4. Explain your answer to #4. How did someone change your thinking? Name: _____________________

Section #2: Mussolini Attacks Ethiopia Ethiopia was one of Africa’s 2 remaining independent nations. The rest of Africa was controlled by European countries like Britain, France and Belgium. The Ethiopians had successfully defended themselves from an invasion by Italy in the 1890s. 40 years later, to get revenge for this loss, fascist Italian leader Mussolini ordered an invasion of Ethiopia in 1935. This time new Italians tanks, airplanes, guns and poison gas would easily defeat the Ethiopian weapons. In order for Italy to successfully defeat Ethiopia, supplies, troops and weapons needed to be passed through England’s Suez Canal. Without this path, it would be much more challenging to bring in troops and guns. Ethiopian emperor, Haile Selassie, appealed to the League of Nations for help. 1 . What might happen if the League of Nations does not respond to this invasion? 2. Why might the League of Nations choose not to respond to this invasion? 3. Should the League of Nations appease the Italians? A) Yes, the League of Nations should appease the Italians and let the Italians take over Ethiopia. B) No, the League of Nations should NOT appease the Italians. The League of Nations should try to stop the Italians from conquering Ethiopia. 4. Explain your answer to #4. How did someone change your thinking? Name: _____________________

Section #3: Hitler Defies the Versailles Treaty Hitler hated the Treaty of Versailles, which was created after World War I to keep everlasting peace. Remember, the treaty limited the size of Germany’s army, made them pay $33 billion in reparations to Europe, give back territory and kept them out of the League of Nations. It also blamed World War I on Germany. The Treaty also stated that the Germans could NOT cross into the “Rhineland” on either side of France’s Rhine River. The goal is to keep Germans from starting another war. In 1936, Germans sent troops into the “Rhineland”, which they were not supposed to do. The Germans broke the Treaty of Versailles. 1 . What might happen if the League of Nations does not respond to this invasion? 2. Why might the League of Nations choose not to respond to this invasion? 3. Should the League of Nations appease the Germans? C) Yes, the League of Nations should appease the Germans and let the Germans take over the Rhineland near France. D) No, the League of Nations should NOT appease the Germans. The League of Nations should try to stop the Germans from conquering the Rhineland. 4. Explain your answer to #4. How did someone change your thinking? Name: _____________________

Axis Powers Unite Hitler and the Nazis were growing in strength. Mussolini decided that he wants to seek an alliance with the Germans, so in 1936 the two dictators reached an agreement to join together. Within one month, Japan had joined Italy and Germany, forming a world alliance known as the Axis. This alliance helped supply troops, tanks and airplanes to help out another dictator in the Spanish Civil War. Should the League of Nations have appeased the Axis Powers of Japan, Italy and Germany? EXPLAIN for all 3 countries, use the words appease(ment) and League of Nations. ●
