PANAMA BABY GEISHA
History
La Berlina Estate
Geisha is originally an Ethiopian coffee from a
town called Gesha in the West of Ethiopia. Somehow the coffee eventually ended up in Panama
and was planted by a small group of farmers in different plantations around the village of Boquete
in the Chriqui province in the 1930’s. It went unnoticed for the best part of nearly 40 years until
La Berlina Estate Coffee Farm was founded by Mr Segundo Diaz, a columbian soldier sent to Panama to quash
the separatist uprising in the early 20th Century. Panama obtained independence and the soldiers were given
choice of returning to Columbia or to settle in Panama.
Having fallen in love Mr Diaz decided to stay and start
a coffee plantation. By 1920 Mr Diaz, with the help of
his new family had built a fully sustainable farm. By
1930 La Berlina Estate was produced an already renowned coffee but this wasn’t enough to support the
ever growing family so Mr Diaz’ son Don Manuel eventually sold the farm. Casa Ruiz, S.A later bought the farm

Coffee from the La Berlina Estate has been winning
many international awards since the late nineties.
In 2005 the Ruiz family obtained Geisha seeds from
the Esmeralda plantation and started work on a Geisha nursery using the best land available to them and
planting the little trees between the old Typicas Arabicas. By 2011 250 lb was harvested and entered into
the “Best of Panama” cupping competition placing
4th. The name ‘Baby Geisha’ was given after those
small geisha trees produced those wonderful fruits.
