Sunday 1 January
Fog morg. fine later. Roy to Queen’s club. Spencer & Douglas called.
Mrs. Oakes not well, afraid of a stroke. Dickie in to luncheon. V. busy
with his room. Mr. Freyer to dinner, dull evg. I felt so seedy with little F.
Mr. F. left at 10.30. Lennie & Maud at Nymans. I came down in time for
luncheon.
Monday 2 January
In bed till 12.30. Emilie’s temper becoming unbrearable, sheer laziness
on my part or w’d not stand it! Lin off on furniture hunt after luncheon. I
drove at 3 to enquire after the 2 baby daughters of Col Welby & Fritz
Jackson, flowers to Désirée! Saw Mrs. Keene who was v. amusing as
usual. Lin bought 3 new pieces of furniture for his room & a quantity of
curtain grey brown satin for drawing room.
Tuesday 3 January
In bed till 12.30. Mrs. Nembhard & Mrs. & Miss Evans called. Mrs. Blair
taken house in Cromwell Gds. Box for Adelphi. Pantomime “Puss in
Boots”. Lin, Roy & self dined at 6 o’c. Lennie & Maud came on at 7.30 &
we three joined Lin & Roy at theatre. V. good piece. Maudie looking
sweet but has a cold. Saw Mrs. A. Peto at theatre.
Wednesday 4 January
In bed till 12.30. Midge & D. came whilst I was dressing. M. sat with me
some time. Maudie arrived for luncheon looking v. pale & delicate, 5
days en retard with her little F. Feel most anxious about her. At 3 o’c we
drove about parlourmaid for her to Mrs. Lord’s & to Miss Watson & to
Maudie’s. Feel depressed leaving the child alone, she wants a girl to be
with her during day. Young Micklejohn going to dine there & sleep night.
Roy & self alone to dinner, he to theatre after. Dear Lin’s birthday.

Men here fitting curtains fr. Taylor’s, awful mess after, I cleared it. Box
for “Ld & Lady Algy”. Mr. & Mrs. E.Reed dined here & went with us.
Delightful evening, enjoyed it immensely. Mrs. Lecky (Miss Payton) &
her late husband’s niece called & had tea. V. pleased to see her, looks
just the same but grey hair. Did not see my darling Maud all day.
Friday 6 January
Received div due June last fr. Coupé London shares £9.5.7. 2 pheasants
& brace of partridges fr. Mr. D’Arcy. To Maudie’s at 3 o’c. To call at Mrs.
Kendall (out) & Mrs. H. Power, in. Stayed a long time. Mr. Power & his
son & dau-in-law there. Pianette wonderful. Left Maudie at 27. Fell asleep
in Lin’s room before 9 o’c dinner. V. tired.
Saturday 7 January
Out morg. shop’g. Took 2 div amounting to £9.5.7 to L. County Bank.
Ordered fruit, flowers & plants Taylor’s. Carriage at 3. Got flowers & paid
for them 2/- at Aldous for Mrs. Fritz, left them. To C. Hartree’s. Stayed a
long time there & on to Maudie’s. Found her & Lennie in library, just
returned fr. New York. Maud looking so pretty & sweet in her new grey
Young gown. She & Lennie to Opera tonight. Lin & Roy to first night of
“School” Hares. Gave my place to Roy.
Sunday 8 January
Lennie & Maud to dinner. Walked to enquire for Sp. & Mrs. Oakes, there
& back. Lin & Roy to Calais. Lovely day so warm. Mr. Bret Harte & Midge
& Dora called, former most entertaining. V. pleasant evg. all v. cheery.
Roy noisy. Lin enjoyed his day, met Mr. Gill & Mr. Merryweather.
Monday 9 January
Roy to see Mr. Gill. Out morg. shop’g. Emilie late again morg
consequently had to clean brass & drawing room myself. At 3 to
Maudie’s called on Mrs. P. Agnew & to see pictures, Rembrandts, at
Academy. Beautiful collection. Left Maudie & home in time to dress,
dine, & go with Lin & Roy to “Gaiety”. V. good “Runaway Girl”.

Tuesday 10 January
Out at 11.15. Barkers for flowers etc. To Marshalls, Willats, ordered
driving shoes. To darling Maud’s brought her back to luncheon & stayed
here till 7 o’c. Found her cleaning silver with Sykes! Miss Morgan & her
brother & Winnie Lockyer came. Quiet evg. with Lin & Roy. Miss White
here.
Wednesday 11 January
Out morg. shop’g in carriage bought 2 coms. No, walked. Roy & self
dined at darling Maud’s. Major Hemming there, don’t care for him so
unpolished like his brother. Lennie in v. late & looking so tired. Most
excellent dinner, extremely well cooked & served, silver lovely. Maudie
looking sweet. White here.
Thursday 12 January
Stormy rough day. Little Bixley here morg. helping me with books. V.
pretty respectable little girl. White here. Lin Roy & self dine early & go to
see “Lady Ursula”. V. good indeed, enjoyed it immensely.
Friday 13 January
Out shop’g. Went at 4 o’c to Maud’s sat 2 hrs with her, looking v. sweet.
Had had Edie Sismey with her. Roy went to Mrs. Macqueen’s dance, saw
Maud & Lennie there who left before Mr. Blair arrived. Roy & Mr. B. left
together at 2 o’c. Miss White here pd. her 10/- for 4 days.
Saturday 14 January
Out morg shop’g, met Evelyn C. who walked home with me. Went at 4 to
enquire for Midge, out, & Spencer, Mrs. Fildes & Mrs. Gale & Mrs.
Mackenzie, Mrs. Pennefather to enquire for Mrs. Jones, v. ill. Lin Roy &
self to Daly’s to see “Greek Slave”. V. good. Saw Pollens there. Men
finished putting up new curtains in drawing room.

Pouring wet morg. In all day. Roy to luncheon with Mr. Blair who came
back here to tea with him & stayed 1¼ hour. The huge cornice with
curtains fell at the stained glass end of room with a crash when Emilie
drew them at tea time.! Only put up yesterday. Lennie & Maud to dinner.
Maudie domestically worried poor darling. Lin lunched at club, I alone.
Monday 16 January
Mrs. C. Hunter’s dinner 8 o’c. Pouring wet day. Overslept myself again &
feel bilious. “Belle of New York” box tonight, asked Sp. & Con. Mr. Blair
going with him & returning to Scotland by last train. V. pleasant dinner
at the H’s, met the Waterlows, Miss Chapman etc & nice old gentleman
Mr. Ridley. Drove Miss C. home. Lin walked.
Tuesday 17 January
Mrs. E.T. Reed’s dinner 7.30 at 112 Cromwell Rd. Feel awfully tired.
Maudie to luncheon. May Nembhard, Mrs. Joachim & dau. & Mabel
Wallace called. Out morg. shops. Mr. Munro took me in at the Reeds &
Mr. Agnew P on other side. Felt too tired to enjoy myself. Hideous
house, v. indifferent dinner & service, light dreadful on table. Partridges,
Barries, Seaman, Munros etc.
Wednesday 18 January
Out morg. to Midge feel v. seedy & head tired. Roy tires me by his
arguing. Con dines here & we three go to see v. good piece at Terry’s
theatre. Fetched Lin on way home fr. Athenaeum. Midge in bed, saw
Waddie there. Dora going to Pyt tomorrow until Monday.
Thursday 19 January
Roy packing & generally tiresome, makes my head ache. Maudie called
for me at 3.15, gave Roy £1. M. & I to call on Lady Bergne, Mrs. A. Lewis
& Mrs. Ritchie (all in) last just starting for Hatfield. Long chat with Ellie.
Maud v. quiet but looking sweetly pretty. Roy returned by last train to
Oxford, had dog cart. Rather glad he has gone, cannot stand his being
so idle.

Friday 20 January
Wet & fine alternately. Peaceful calm & my head feels better. In all morg.
At 3.30 to call Lady Weston. Left Annie’s photo to be copied 3/6. Flowers
2/- for Fritz. To Gorden Home, Holly St Oxford St. Sat some time with
Fritz & Mrs. ? Called on Mrs. Lindo & left 18 prs of gloves to be cleaned,
& to Mrs. Macqueen’s who said Maud was greatly admired at her dance.
Saturday 21 January
Out shop’g in Kens. Then in cab to Maud’s & with her to Dr Fenton,
home at 2 o’c to lunch after after leaving Maud. Dressed & went at 3.30
with Mabel W. to see Mr. Waterlow’s(?) pictures at Egyptian Hall. To
Grafton Gallery to see wonderful Russian pictures Vereskis, (illeg) & fr.
there to meet Maud, Lennie, Mr. Allen & Mr. Johnson at the Ladies(?) tea
place Bond St. Great crowd & v. hot. Lin at work all day.
Sunday 22 January
Lin at home. Walked late in afternoon. Walked morg. after doing the
washing, v. annoyed Emilie so careless & no pride in her work it seems
hopeless with her. Only Mr. Bret Harte called. Had most delightful talk
with him for 2 hours. Darling Maud & Lennie to dinner, M. looking sweet,
Lennie wreck with bad cold.
Monday 23 January
Man doing elecric wires over my dressing table. Lin out to luncheon.
Lennie remaining in all day nursing cold.
Tuesday 24 January
Mrs. Rawlinson’s dinner ¼ to 8 o’c. Walked morg. V. cold. Enjoyed
evening but had indigestion. Met Broughtons, Barry Pains, Mrs. Clifford.
Rest fresh dinner of 18. V. good dinner. Mrs. Rubens, Aunt Linda &
Ethel, Mrs. Power & Mrs. Palgrave Simpson called.
Wednesday 25 January

Mr. Guthrie’s tea to meet H. Langleys protégé artists of 14. V. clever.
Fetched Maudie called & to Mr. Guthrie’s. V. ugly geniuses! Mrs. B.
Partridge, Mrs. Nettleship both quaint, several men, little uncle of
genius’s nicest person there. I drove back to Maudie’s & dined there.
Most excellent dinner & v. nice new parlour maid, thorough gentleman’s
servant.
Thursday 26 January
Out for walk v. cold to Round Pond. Lin dined with Mr. Knightley
Gresham Club. I fetched Ethel Herapath at 4 & went to see Burne Jones
pictures 3/-. Called on Miss Hogarth after & saw tiresome Mrs. Sington &
a sister of M. Stone’s. Ethel dined here. Bad dinner badly served.
Friday 27 January
Mrs. Tweedie’s dinner 8 o’c. Unable to go on account of Lin’s work. X.
Seedy. Miss White here doing Lin’s curtains working in my room. V. late
dinner 9.35. Roy ate his first dinner for Bar!!! Returned in time to dine
again with us. Maudie fetched me at 4 we went together called on Mrs.
Huish & Mrs. Coward & met Lennie at dentists. M’s carriage brought me
to Midge’s stayed some time. Cab’d home.
Saturaday 28 January
In bed till 12.30. Miss White here doing bags for drawing room curtains.
Darling Maud to luncheon, went with me to Goupil & Fine Arts Galleries,
Oxford pictures & pastels. Saw only Mrs. C. Carr. Left Maudie at 27. Lin
& self dined at dear Maud’s exquisite dinner well served. Her house
maid ill with influenza. Roy ate 2nd Bar dinner. Mr L. Coward most kind &
drove R. on to theatre after.
Sunday 29 January
In bed till 12.30. Lin to Calais. Roy out to lunch. Awfully dark day &
damp. No one called. Lennie & Maud to dinner most cheery. Lin enjoyed
his day.

In bed till 12.30. Lin bothered by F.C.B. again. Bother him. Roy returned
to Oxford by last train. V. charming letter fr. Mr. Lewis Coward about
Roy, Lin & I delighted with it. Only trust Roy may prove worthy of
impression he made Saty night Grays Inn. Men all over house.
Tuesday 31 January
In bed till 12.30. Maudie to luncheon & remained till 6.30. Judy & Lady
Weston, Mrs. Warre, Mrs. Pitt, Mocatta, Enthoven, Harry Henderson,
Percy Holland, Miss Hogarth, Mary Millais, Miss Rose Innes who stayed
on to dinner & left at 11 o’c. Lin dined at Jnr. Carlton with Mr. Galbraith.

In bed till 12.30. Lin to see Lennie & P. Agnew morg. & to Mr. Burnand’s
after luncheon. Miss White here. Satisfactory interview with Burnand.
Why worry Lin? wish he c’d be independent of work. Out with Maudie to
see Fritz, & Mrs. Fritz there.

Pouring wet. Mr. Morris & Mr. Brookes gentlemen jockeys came morg.
Con in bed seedy morg. Long letter fr. Lin. Wet all day. Letters fr. Lin.
Tuesday 7 February
Wet & damp & cold. Con drove me in to Worthing & stayed 1½ hours at
Aunt Anna’s. Found her greatly altered, & much aged. Enjoyed drive. Lin
dines with Maud.
Wednesday 8 February
Letters fr. Lin & Maud. Lovely day, wet later. Walked with Effie & Gordon
over downs. Con alone.
Thursday 9 February
Pouring wet part of day. Out morg. with Baby for walk. Wet later. Con to
Worthing in cart, took Baby. Effie, Miss G. & self for walk. Awful row
between Con & Effie after dinner, makes me feel quite ill. Letters fr. Lin &
Maudie. Lin dining at Mr. Bradbury’s tonight.
Friday 10 February
Spent £2.0.0 at Conrad’s. Returned by 2.7 train fr. Conrad’s, he & Effie
lunching at Mr. Thornton’s. Miss Gordon drove in with me & saw me off.
Lovely day & v. warm. Darling Maud met me in brougham looking pale &
came on home to tea with me. Brought me flowers for drawing room &
table. Unpacked, & re-packed. Lin v. busy. Workmen busy in his room.
We two alone to dinner, peace! after the rows at Con’s most refeshing.
Saturday 11 February
Lin & self decided to go to Lincoln by 4 train, gave us more time. Found
Edgar & Sophy awaiting us at White Hart Hotel where we found most
comfortable bed & dressing room, fire, flowers. Dressed & dined with E.

& S. & talked after in little room. To bed early v. tired. Left Lin talking to
Edgar. Sophy left early on cycle.
Sunday 12 February
Mrs. Craigie’s at home. Unable to accept. Lin got up with bad headache.
Breakfasted in coffee room & then to Cathedral service with Lin. Poor
sermon. At 1 o’c in fly to Edgar’s, The Barracks. Lunched in his quarters
v. good & had tea at Cap’t Harding’s & went over his rooms. He dined at
Edgar’s in the evening. V. entertaining man had been A.D.C. to Gov of
Malta 3 years & met many interesting people. Lin & I walked home.
Monday 13 February
Dull morg. Edgar & Sophy hunting so Lin & self did the curio shops all
morg. After lunch rested & slept. At 4 to Cathedral & over tower. Many
things of interest at Lincoln, gateways, buildings, & its situation so fine.
Drove to Edgar’s at 6. Major Graham there. Pleasant evening, not good
dinner. Drove back, v. strong wind & rain. Letter fr. darling Maud.
Tuesday 14 February
Breakfasted in bed. Sophy fetched me at 11. After finishing packing we
went over Cathedral, most beautiful edifice. Met Edgar & went to
Thompson curio shop with him. Edgar, Sophy, Lin & self lunched
together & drove in omnibus to see us off for London. Comfortable
journey up. Otley in cart took our luggage whilst Lin & I returned by
Metropolitan. Dined at 7 o’c. Lovely morg. All well here. Letter fr. Maudie
poor darling not well.
Wednesday 15 February
Bust morg. Maudie’s to dinner & very delicious dinner, flowers lovely. V.
lucky in her Scotch parlourmaid, most efficient servant.
Thursday 16 February
Lady Bergne’s dinner. Can’t go. Lin dining at Mr. Ayala. I dine at Maud’s,
dinner of 8. Mr. Mickleham, Mr. Stewart, Mr. & Mrs. Griffiths, Miss Rose

Innes. Exquisite dinner perfectly served flowers lovely. Great success.
M. looking sweet in white muslin & pink. Wire fr. Tabs & went to her at
Coburg Hotel. Midge also there. Lin had fairly good dinner at Mr.
Ayala’s, made speech! Great applause! Drove to Drs & shop’d with
Maudie in open carriage. Met Mrs. Drabble.
Friday 17 February
Out morg. shops Kensington, flowers fruit fish fowl! Darling Maud to
luncheon, brought me lovely flowers. House still in workmens hands.
After luncheon M. & self to call on Mdes Colin Hunter, Rawlinson, Tuer,
Holland Nidrey, Geiger, Heyworth Savage. Stores for Lennie’s cigar
cutter £1.2.3. Charbonel & Walkers darling M’s tea, & Effie Weigall, saw
Baby. Left M. at 27 both dining at the Rooths tonight.
Saturday 18 February
Carriage 11 o’c to order blk. & white blouse, enquire Roger Wallace, C.
Hunter, order bonnet, Davis about lamp shades changed. X. Harris
notice. Sat in Lin’s work room still chaos with workmen. Dined 6 o’c & to
first night Hares “Ours”. Hare, G. Hare & Kerr excellent. Met Fildes,
Stones, Lewis, Rubens, Mrs. Miller etc etc. V. pleasant evg.
Sunday 19 February
Mrs. Macqoids dinner 7.45. In all morg. doing books in Lin’s room.
Darling Maud & Lennie to luncheon unexpectedly & stayed to tea,
delighted to see them. Mrs. Watkins (Mary) Florence Walford & Bret
Harte called, latter looking v. seedy. Lin to Club. Charming dinner at Mrs.
M’s, envy their lovely things. Mr. & Mrs. Foa handsome dull woman,
Alexanders, Mr. Smith & Mary Millais.
Monday 20 February
Fog. Arrival more furniture. Lin to Maples. Lennie & Maud to dinner both
most cheery. Called at Maudie’s & saw Lady Lawrence, Mrs. Messel,
Mrs. Griffiths (American) & Miss Schleisinger. To enquire Colin Hunter.

Tuesday 21 February
Walked to Midge’s to ask Dora to dine & go to Drury Lane pantomime
with Lin & self which she did. Midge walked back with me. Miss Innes,
Mrs. Fildes, 2 Child girls (v. common!) Effie Weigall, Mrs. Walkes,
Maggie Hadley (Wells), F. Walford etc called. Maudie to luncheon & tea.
Maudie has dinner party of 7, the Langleys, Clements, Nipper & 2 others.
Wednesday 22 February
Lovely day. Disappointed not going to Oxford. Wrote morg. & walked
twice round Pond with Mrs. Unwin & her friend. Lin & self alone
luncheon. Electric light again blown itself out! At 4 o’c to leave cards
Mrs. Unwin de Vere Hotel, Mrs. Child Albert H. Mansions. To Gordon
Hospital about nurse & to tea Mr. Guthrie’s. Met Tabbie, Dora & Maud
there. Left Maudie at 27.
Thursday 23 February
Mrs. Hankey’s dinner 8 o’c. Out morg. walked to Queens Rd, on to
Sybille’s. Missed Maud. On to Mr. Pepper’s (doctor) & bus home. V. large
dinner. Odd table, pots of violets. Cold. Taken in by Mr. Walford
solicitor, handsome wife sang well. Mr. Bertram played organ & Mrs.
Hankey piano charmingly. I enjoyed evening, Lin v. bored took in pretty
woman though!
Friday 24 February
Lunch with Tabbie, Coburg. Wired lunching with Cavendish Bentincks.
At 3.30 Barkers sent off things to Aunt Barbara. To Nursing home
Fitzroy Sqre, no good, & to Maud’s. V. busy packing. Hilda & Miss Innes
there. Stayed until 8 o’c, taking quantity of new things.
Saturday 25 February
Darling Maud & Lennie start at 9 o’c for Monte Carlo. Linley with them as
far as Calais. Lovely day. Nash man doing drawing room tiles. Walked to
Lady’s shirts association. They were not ready to fit me, v. annoyed. Met
Ethel E. Discoursed on Cowards. Dora came for me 3.30. To Mrs. C.

tea. Lin home at 8 o’c, saw Maud & L off at Calais, good crossing.
Sunday 26 February
Helped Lin with books etc in his room all morg. Dora did not turn up for
luncheon. X. Darling Maud & Lennie arrive at Monte Carlo at 2 o’c today.
Lovely day. V. cold E. wind. No one called but Mrs. Unwin & Miss
Newenham. V. quiet evg. Lin & self alone.
Monday 27 February
3 o’c Her Majesty’s Theatre. Rehearsal Club. Mrs. Mayne’s invitation
unable to go. Lin out all day alone to luncheon. At 3 o’c to Barkers
fetched Miss Rose Innes who went with me to Lady shirt place to be
fitted. Left me at Midge’s. Mrs. Child, Florence, Mr. & Mrs. Bond there.
Left fawn jacket to be altered & got chicken & 2 lettuces Whiteleys. Miss
Rose Innes to dinner. Left jacket Smythes to be altered.
Tuesday 28 February
Out at 11 in brougham. To stores bought seed, apron, bodice, dress
binding, cream cheese v. good & flowers. Walked home. Lady & May
Lawrence, Mrs. Child & F.W, Mrs. G.Armstrong & Grace Fraser & Mrs.
Stone called. Lin out before break. & after lunch on cycle. X. Ami. Lin &
self to Court Theatre “A Court Scandal”. V. good, Seymour Hicks. Saw
Mrs. & the Miss Thorneycrofts & Mr. A. Crawfurd with 2 frisky ladies. A
telegram mysteriously passed round house to Miss M. Macbeth! Not
claimed.
Wednesday 1 March
Mrs. R. Caldicott at home 4 - 6.30. Mrs. A.H.Pollen at home. In bed till 1
o’c. Midge came & sat some time. Orton came to see about for
operation. Tabbie to drawing room. Unable to go & see her felt giddy &
faint . Read all afternoon. Lin had carriage. Mrs. Henderson attends
drawing room.

Thursday 2 March

Dear Lin’s operation at 10.30 under chloroform 1¼ hrs. Found 8 large
piles, 2 v. large internal ones. Much worse than expected. Lin in pain
rest of day. “Tip” most anxious! In all day. Orton came morg. & evg.

Lovely day, cold. In all day. Lin v. full of pain & discomfort. Slept on &
off. Orton came.
Monday 6 March
Lovely day, cold. Lin had good night & looks better. Went for walk to
Whiteleys & back. Letters fr. dear Roy & Maud. Box of dried fruits fr.
Maud fr. Monte Carlo. Mr Pepper & Orton to dress Lin’s wound. Gave Mr.
Pepper cheque. Mrs. Messel, Galbraith, Midge & Mr. Guthrie came to
enquire. Mr. G. went & sat with Lin. Orton came twice. Most
unnececessary.

Out at 11. Lin not good night, weary. Orton came once also
unnecessary, dressed Lin’s wound which Nurse could do. Gillie to lunch
& tea. Mrs. Maquoid, Geiger, Cameron Corbett, Rose Innes called. Mr.

of sweets on to Roy.
Thursday 9 March
Lovely day. Out at 11 in carriage to Whiteleys with Midge, to Cripples
Home left 12 hand’s to be marked there & to Craven Terr, needle place,
& Woollands. Left Midge at home. Spent afternoon with Lin, seems
brighter. Orton came. Lady Lockwood called & I saw her, to enquire,
also Bancrofts, W.H.Wills & many others. Quiet evg. Mr. Fildes called &
stayed some time.
Friday 10 March
Lovely day warmer. Bad day for Lin & he had bad night, up after castor
oil 4 times. To stores to get his fish. Ordered underlinen for self. Mr.
Hartree & Mr. Ryle called & saw Lin. Miss Rose Innes came & had tea,
but did not see Lin.

Miss Rose Innes party at Adelphi, Berkeley Hotel dinner. Out morg. Sat
with Lin all afternoon. Mr. Guthrie & Mr. Lucy came & sat some time with
Lin.

In all day. Lin v. seedy & uncomfortable. Spencer, Evelyn Coward came
& Mr. Wirgman who sat some time with Lin & left at same time with
Evelyn.

Mrs. McLaren’s dinner. Cannot go. Fog. V. anxious about Maud, writes
been in bed 2 days, telegraphed to her. Out 11 o’c shop’g. Midge called
& saw Lin & sent lovely salmon. Mr. & Mrs. Finlay & Mrs. Eykyn came to

Mrs. Steincopff’s dinner, unable to go. Lin had better night. Wire fr.
darling Maud, better thank God. At 11 to Whiteleys ordered many things.
To enquire for Mrs. Steincopff, influenza, & to Barkers for flowers.
Walked fr. Hyde Pk. Cor. to Gds. Lady Bergne, Mrs. Reeve, Mrs.
Turquand, Mrs. F. Evans, Mrs. Wallace & Mr. Fildes called. Latter sat &
had tea with Lin. Lin seems better. F. Walford to lunch & tea.
Wednesday 15 March
Mrs. A.H. Pollen at home. Fog, sun later. No letter fr. Maud. At 12 o’c to
Whiteleys, bought away quail, sole, rusks(?). Walked there & back. Lin
about same, v. weary of bed. Mr. Burnand, Mr. W. Stone, Mr. Hartree &
Mr. Finlay came & saw Lin. Mrs. Burnand & Mr. & Mrs. Galbraith also
came & stayed some time. Left Mr. Finlay with Lin & went at 5.30 to Mrs.
Pollen’s, saw Mrs. Lawrence there, v. handsome woman. Quiet evg. Lin
v. tired.
Thursday 16 March
Fog slightly. At 11 o’c out in carriage to Whiteleys ordered (illeg) pigeon,
5 sweetbread, prunes etc. Walked down Row, saw accident to groom,
unhurt. Met Mr. P. Holland. Mr. Burnand & Midge called. No news of
Maudie. Awful headache & feel vy seedy, no time to think of it.
Friday 17 March
Mrs. Galbraith’s theatre & dinner party alas cannot go. Mrs. Quintin
Twiss 4 - 7. Mrs. Sherman 4 - 7. X. Mr. Ryle dines here with me 6.30. No
news of Maud since telegram on Tuesday. XX. Letter at 10 PM fr. Maudie.
Go at 11.30 with Midge to Godfreys tailor. Ball & ordered lace blouse 33/. Mr. Guthrie, Miss Rose Innes (who brought lovely roses) Mrs. Jackson

came but was dressing for dinner. Roy to theatre after. Roy returned fr.
Oxford for Vac. No one came besides.

V. cold. Lin going on slowly. Did birds & flowers. Roy at his Club all day.

Florence W. to luncheon. Came early & went with me at 11 to stores for
Lin’s chicken & sole. Felt v. bad & in awful pain with Hemorroid. Bitterly
cold. Snow. Felt v. bad after lunch incerted morphia suppositor &
became faint & dreadfully sick. Nurse most kind. Mrs. Geiger & sister,
Mrs. Tweedie & Mrs. Harley etc called, too ill to see anyone except Mrs.
Geiger. To bed at 6 o’c. Letter fr. Maudie, better & gone to San Remo. Lin
better, in his study.

the pain I suffer comes fr. a small fissure. Went about hat. Dora came to

Beastly day still in great pain. Lin better. Bitterly raw & cold. Went to Mr.
Ryle’s studio, saw young Wallace & Mr. Newton there. Only called to
enquire Mr. Aird.
Sunday 26 March
Lovely morg. Lin went for his first little walk with Roy & self & was none
the worse. Miss Rose Innes, Mr. Douglas who amused Lin v. much, & Mr.
Lemon called. Tabby & 2 girls arrived at Coburg too late to dine here.
Awful pain fr. fissure all day. Tilda left with Miss Rose Innes at 6 o’c. Lin
slept in my room.
Monday 27 March
Lovely warm morg. Long letter fr. darling Maud fr. San Remo, much
better. Out morg. shops, still great pain better about 12.30. Lovely box of
flowers from Maudie. Tabby & the 2 girls to dinner. I called on Midge
afternoon. E. & H. had row again waiting execrable in consequence.

Maudie’s cook goes to her. J. Crawford, Bridge St, Catrine, Ayrshire.
Maudie & Lennie lunch here. Think Maud looks v. thin & pale, longed to
have her all to myself. They had to hurry off after luncheon for Nymans
where they stay until next week. V. warm. Lovely day, so glad for Lin.
Finished reading “My official Wife”. V. good.

In bed till 12.30. Finished reading “La fiancée de Gilbert” sent it off to
Mrs. Humphreys. V. pretty love story. Letter fr. Lin, seems better &
enjoying himself. Mr. Bret Harte called, did not see him. Put away china
drawing room.

Go by train D.V. to Tabby’s, Pyt House. V. amusing journey met Mrs.
Stone & Miss White at Waterloo. Had v. handsome “Harem” lady &
husband & fair young man in my carriage. Lady distinctly fast &
amusing. Salisbury Mr. & Mrs. Jack Bennett got into my carriage & were
v. funny, he was. Lin met me station & found all Langleys here. V. jolly.

In bed to breakfast. Fine day. Country looking lovely. Mr. Jack Bennett
came to ask all to Steeplechases tomorrow. The 2 Hamiltons, Roy,
Tabbie & Bee only going. Took walk in grounds with Bee. Lin only
progressing slowly. Letter fr. Maudie fr. Nymans.
Monday 3 April
Dullish, sun later. Party off to Steeplechases, Midge, Lin & self & Dora
remaining. Sat out afternoon with Sprite. Lin & girls for walk. Midge

Lin’s cold v. bad. Walked with him morg, could scarcely speak. Ham &
Eve hunting. Packed afternoon. Mr. Hilton called at tea time & brought
photos of French ports. Mr. Seymour Hayden came to stay. Mr. Jack
Bennett dined at Pyt. V. rude man & noisy, loose in conversation.
Hamilton L. & Roy out all day fishing.
Thursday 6 April
Midge, Ham, Lin & self leave Pyt, & Roy & Dora return tomorrow. Lin’s
cold v. heavy. We came by 11.40 fr. Tisbury & had v. pleasant journey
up. Mr. Watney called. Hamilton F. & Mr. Seymour Hayden went off by
first train to Southampton to see the yacht. No work ready for Lin. Mr
Guthrie goes to Pyt today, just miss him.

Out morg. & called at Midge’s afternoon, Roy & Dora returning home
tonight, also at 27 & Maud not returning until Monday.
Saturday 8 April
To Whiteleys morg. Awful blizzard had to take a cab home. With Lin in
his study all afternoon. Dora came & went with us to “Three
Musketeers”. V. good indeed, better than Tree’s. Mistake about D’s
carriage & had to take cab. Think it v. unwise Lin going out at night.

Hartree. Lennie & Maud joined us there. Saw the Trowers. V. amusing

dinner. Roy at Queen’s Club all day, Public School rackets. Not a soul
called. Mr. Stone also dined with us & Lin enjoyed chat with him.

Lennie & Maud to see house at Esher. I dined there, 27, evg. Maudie v.
tired poor darling. To Whiteleys morg. in brougham. Roy dined with
Harold Messel at Hyde Pk Club & to Adelphi after. Lin to Punch dinner
for first time since operation.

Out at 11 in brougham, shop’g. Had 2 fowls & 1/- eggs fr. Black Ireland.

but find Mr. B. more accentuated in his ill bredness, odd little man.

Out morg. shops Kensington. Roy to Nymans until Monday, travels with
Maud & Lennie who go for a week. In afternoon dined at 6 o’c. Lin & self
to 1st night of Sardon’s play of “Robespierre” at Lyceum. Irving had
tremendous reception & brilliant house. Play translated by L. Irving. Had
supper after on stage. Felt v. tired. Sat next to A. Critchett. De la Rues,
Trowers, Mrs. Craigie, Mrs Tree & Lady Granby, Burnands etc etc etc.
Sunday 16 April
Went for ½ hour walk. Lin to Calais. Bitterly cold east wind, hope he
won’t take cold. Roy at Nymans. Ethel English came & stayed some
time. Lin seems all better for day, cold & wet returning.
Monday 17 April
Miss Peachy here 2.10 for massage, 3 times weekly. Great fire at Hyde
Park Club. Roy retrned fr. Nymans. Harold Messel & Ina Mackenzie to
dinner.
Tuesday 18 April
Out morg. to Woollands. Great fire at Hyde Pk. Club yesterday. Edgar to
luncheon & stayed some time. Box at Shaftesbury, Edgar & Sophy. Mrs.
Mackenzie & Colin met us there, pretty crowded. Roy dined with Lennie
& to some music hall after. Lady Bergne & 2 others called.

To Woollands to be fitted, walked back. Saw Mr. Stone & Mr. Trower in
Park. Miss Peachy 2.12. Roy to Her Majesty’s. I dined with Edgar &
Sophy at Monico, enjoyed it, & was home by 10.15. Lin out all day long,
seems quite well.

came & stayed an hour about tea time. As usual most entertaining,
thinks Ld. Crewe greatly spoilt by his Ld. Lieuts of Ireland, has never
been able to recover fr. it! Wrote & read “Nance Oldfield”, badly written.
Gave Mr. B.H. his own book by mistake for “Paths of the Prudent” to
read! Stupid.
Monday 24 April
Wet & dull. Vy funny letter fr. Mr. Bret Harte about my mistake in giving
him one of his own books for one I wished him to read. Lin rerturned fr.
Nymans bringing me lovely pink roses fr. darling M. Lennie again in bed
with cold. Lin off to Academy, Varnishing day. Pouring with rain. Midge

Mrs. Mayne’s musical party 4 - 7. Darling Maud’s wedding day. Private
View Academy. Maudie lunching here & going together. Maudie lunched
here & we went to Academy together. Enjoyed it immensely. Not many
friends, M. greatly admired. Left her at Claridges Hotel to meet Schiffs &
Lennie. Unable to go to Lady Margaret W’s or Mrs. Mayne’s. Maud &
Lennie arrived just as we were sitting down to dinner at 9.30. Both
seemed depressed, Lennie v. seedy.

Clifford called & Lady Sadler. Entirely forgot all about her & could not
imagine who she was at first. Midge & Dora to Con’s. Hamilton to dinner

Miss White here. Miss Chapman 4 - 7. Lady Hickman tea 5 o’c. Lin & self
to Oxford D.V. by early train. Lovely day. Lunched with Roy in his
rooms, excellent lunch. Roy looking v. limp & seedy. Met Conrad & Mr.
Rumford at Oxford only had a moment with them. Perfectly charmed
with Oxford, one of the loveliest places I have ever seen, full of beauty &
interest at every corner. Saw darling Maud in Palace Gds on driving
home looking sweet.

& coat morg. & walked to enquire for Maud, out, & to Midge’s. Wanted
me to stay luncheon, cab’d home on ac’t of Lin. Massage 6/-. With Maud
& M.P. at 4 in open carriage to call on Mrs. Tate & to Mrs. Lewis’ at
home. Lin late to Lady de la Rue’s at home, self too tired. Settee fr.
Oxford arrived.

Lennie & M.P. at Pad. St. & went down with them. Lunched in Roy’s
rooms excellent luncheon. After to river punt overloaded so Lin & self
returned & walked about town. Met rest at station & returned together.

Mrs. Harry Lewis 2 – 6. Masseuse 9.30. Breakfasted in bed & at 11.10 to
Maud, went with her to Mr. Pollock, examined her carefully, gave her
tonic, spray for throat & rec’d warmer clothing. Lunched with Maud, F.
Walford there, M.P. out. Callers Mrs. English, Henderson, & Maggie
Hood & dau, Messel & Ruth, Mary Millais, Paxton & Maud, Mrs. F. Kerr,
Miss Enthoven. Maud had to put off dining at the Granthams tonight.

ordered collars Ball & Ferner. Not a soul called. V. heavy showers
afternoon, bad drawing room day. Invitation to dine at Mrs. Burnand’s
tonight. Charming dinner M’s, 8. Mr. Thornton, Mr. Dale & Harold,
flowers on table lovely. Most delicious dinner, 10 courses.

To darling M. at 3. Went with her round park great crowd & impossible to
call anywhere on ac’t of Queen opening or laying foundation stone for
new Vic & Albert Museum South Kensington. Tea at M’s, seems v. seedy
poor darling. Dined alone & bed early.

In bed to breakfast. M. Lennie Lin & self lunched at Hotel. M. & self for
drive 2 hrs along the Dover Rd. Met Lin & Lennie walking to Dover. M. &
self had cocoa in our rooms & rest & met at dinner. Sat together after. A
half brother of Mr. Burnand’s here. Sat in lounge after dinner saw Mr.
Dickens.

In bed to breakfast. M. & self lunched alone. Col Ward Bennett came &
saw us after & long talk with the Dickens.. Lennie & Lin to Boulogne for
day & dined there. M. & self dined alone & sat with the Dickens after
until Lin & Lennie’s return 9.45. M. & self for hours’ drive to Sandgate.

Wretched day in bed to breakfast. Lin & Lennie to Calais, Mr. D. also. Sat
in with M. all day, M. much better. Sat afternoon & evg with Dickens.
Mrs. D. & Enid returned by last train to London. Mr. Mercer & Mr. D. saw

“The gay Lord Quex” after. Howard called to tell me of poor Aunt
Bessie’s death on Tuesday last the 13th at 25 Oxford Ter. Effie came in
whilst Bee was dining alone here. Greatly enjoyed Mr. G’s dinner at
Berkeley, only Miss Rose Innes besides ourselves. Play splendid & Irene
Vanburgh splendid.
Friday 16 June
Dine at Queensland Court, Earls C. Ex. 6 o’c. Colonial Restaurant (Mr.
Jack). Sp came in morg, taking me tonight. Bee to lunch with Lady Edith
Fox Pitt. Quiet afternoon. Odd assemblage at Ex. Sp & self sat together,
speeches feeble, delivery worse, learnt v. little. Good dinner considering
230 guests. Usual clumsy waiting & champagne spilt. Found Effie at
Staf. Ter. on retuern & Lin etc still at table 11 o’c.

Roy returns fr. Oxford. Bee leaves, I came back to Oaktree by 4 o’c train.
Roy had not arrived. Found Mr. Fleischman & Lennie already at Oaktree
& busy with games. Maudie looking v. well. Fly met me as horse gone
lame. V.pleasant dinner, Mr. F. much nicer than I had pictured him. Bee
left by early train for Conrad’s, not pleased to go!!!

Lovely morg. hot, dull later. Len. & Mr. F on cycles to Nymans. Maud &
self in Victoria with hired gee. Went steadily & well. Excellent lunch at
Nymans & returned at 6 o’c just in time for dinner heavily laden with
flowers. Violent indigestion at dinner ? cannot imagine.

Lovely sat out writing under trees. Mr. F. & Lennie off early. Sat out in

Mrs. Jopling Rowe 4 - 7. Miss Hemmings dinner ¼ to 8, acpt. Mr.

dinner Mr. H’s in artistic house.

Mad’lle called & went with me to be fitted Miss Fletchers. Carriage at 4

Lovely morg. Drove over with Lin & Maud to see house “Greenings”
lovely situation, v. wide & four & ½ miles fr. station. Lin went up by 4
something train, saw E. English in same train. The Lorings arrived at
Nymans fr. Malta.

Lovely day, some wind. Roy goes to Nymans till Tuesday next. Harold
comes here. Maud, Winnie & self drove to Crawley, met the Messels who
all returned here with us, the Lorings, Mr. & Mrs. M & Muriel. Roy
returned with them, Nipper came here. Mr. Loring returning tomorrow &
Thursday sails again for Malta.

Nipper here. Maud, Winnie & self drove to Crawley & on to Mrs. Trots to

belonging to Miss Lyon hacking breeder. Lovely place & house. I drove

Showery morg. No one to Church. Lennie left for Camp, Worthing, after
luncheon with his man. Winnie Lockyer left after early dinner 7 o’c. Mr.
Marriott came to tea & stayed until 6.30. Roy & Lin went on their cycles
to Nymans, large party there.

Lin at work all day & for cycle ride after tea. I slept with Maud. Sat out all
day. Roy played in a match between Horley & Handcross, made 41 runs
& 5 wickets.

In bed till 12. To Smiths, ordered bassinette, bought papers. Wrote
Secretary of Whiteley’s lost the Banker’s receipt. Put away all linen of
Maud’s in spare room. Lin dined at Mrs. F.C.B’s, only A. a’Beckett &
F.C.B there excellent dinner as usual & well served. Unable to go self,
dined off tray drawing room & bed early.
Saturday 19 August
Dull v. close. 2 letters fr. darling M. Lin leaves for Ballechin Mr. Wolff’s
place near Perth tonight. I unable to return to Maud until Monday. Dear
Roy’s birthday so sorry not to be with them in Sussex. Find Emilie
terribly dull & sad to wait on one, depresses one by her own depression.

Thursday 31 August
Lennie called me at 2 o’c this morng. Maudie having pains every 4 or 10
minutes. Emma & self made up bed in spare room, got her there. Lennie
for Dr Pollock, came 3.30 & Queen C’s hospital nurse arrived 6 o’c. Had
to send again for doctor, arrived about 6.30. Maudie had a little son at
12.10 AM both doing well. Nurse Millie arrived, dressed & washed baby.
Dr. breakfasted & lunched here. Lin off to Mr. Lawrence’s after for day’s
shooting. Mr. & Mrs. Messel came evg, all so delighted with Baby &
darling M.

Maudie & Baby had v. good night, both flourishing. Dr Pollock came
once. Shop’d morg &walked across Park to Prince’s Gate. Rested
afternoon. Lennie in to lunch & dinner. Mrs. Messel came brought
flowers, Mr. Messel evening. Maudie v. well. Sent £1.1.0 to Roy.

Friday 20 October
Darling Maud wrote two very dear letters which made me weep, the
darling sent us a lovely basket of flowers. Lin v. hard at work all day &
dined v. late. Think Griffiths will do well bye & bye, nice girl & anxious to
learn. Mrs. Tattersall & Mrs. Routh called & Miss Rose Innes who gave
us a lovely little silver cream jug, & darling Maud gave us 2 lovely old
silver salt cellars.

Our siver wedding party given by Miss Rose Innes, Bristol Hotel 7 o’c.
After to see “The Degenerates” Mrs. Langtry & C. Hawtrey, party of 12.
Fog. 3 boxes at Garrick thrown into one! Stupid piece. Kerr took
Hawtrey’s part. Mrs. Langley v. bad. X. Garnet & Griffiths left for Maud’s.
Nice girls & have done well here. My new Parlour maid & housemaid
come, Barker & Ellen.

Dark dull day not cold. Another battle at Glencol (?) young Micklejohn
wounded seriously, great bravery among men & officers, our victory. To
Barkers 3.30, Midge’s, out, Mrs. Evans away, & to tea with Fanny Barker
& her party at Sackville Hotel, saw Zimmermans there. Lin v. busy on
Almanack, began shading at 4 o’c. Ellen not a good duster, sweeper, or
polisher!
Tuesday 24 October
Out 11 o’c shop’g. Both maids leave at this month. X. No one called. Lin
v. busy with work on Almanack, sat all day nearly with him. He must be
dead tired.
Wednesday 25 October
Lin desperately hard pushed to finish Almanack. Sent it off at 7 o’c. I
dined alone. Called on Midge sems v. seedy & depressed. Great losses
among our troops near Dundee. Called on Mrs. Finlay, out, Mrs.
Turquand in. Miss A Clerke called, out.
Thursday 26 October
Death of Gen. Symons. Retreat of Gen. Yule to Ladysmith to join Sir G.
White’s forces, left wounded Dundee. I lunched with Tabbie at Coburg
1.30. Looks v. pretty & smart as usual. Rain. Called after on Gen.
Nembhard stayed some time, & to Midge’s, seems better but not well, &
v. depressed at leaving. Lin put finishing touches to Almanack. F.C.B.
pleased for a marvel!

V. wet & dark, warm. Lin to call at Midge’s to say Good bye, they all
leave today at 2 o’c for S’hampton.

disaster to our troops near Ladysmith, had to surrender 2 battalions on

them. Baby came in his pram looking sweetly pretty. Mrs. & Enid
Dickens, Miss Rose Innes, Miss Sutton, Mrs. R. Wallace called.
Wednesday 8 November
Pouring wet morg. Saw tall parlour maid & Scotch housemaid am taking
up characters of both, short characters alas! Darling to lunch & tea,
complains of pain in her side. Stayed till 6 o’c. They dined at Mrs.
Griffith’s. Felt vy seedy & rather sick, had my tray in drawing room, not
hungry.

In bed. Up all night with violent sickness & D & slight flooding again.
Orton came, am to remain in bed. V. feverish & feel thoroughly ill.
Darling Maud came looking sweet. Sent Baby in to Mrs. Coward’s where
we were to have had tea, & stayed with M. Baby brought me lillies! Maud
remained until 5.30.
Saturday 11 November
Lovely day. had good night, feel better. Dr O. came, to remain in bed.,
still ½ degree fever. Evelyn called, brought me violets. Received
satisfactory letter about F. Tweddle parlour maid. Letter fr. Midge written
off Tenneriffe, well so far, but rough passage.
Sunday 12 November
Lin & self to dine at Mrs. Sutton’s ¼ to 8. In bed till 3 o’c. Had v. bad
night could not sleep until 3.30 this morg. Darling Maud & Lennie arrived
at ¼ to 4, stayed till 5.30. They dine at Mrs. Clifford’s tonight. Lin alone
to Mrs. Sutton, I too bad to go. Finished reading “Martyrdom of an
Empress” most interesting.
Monday 13 November
Lin to see Roy at Oxford, well & happy in lovely new rooms. Up by 12
o’c. Orton came. Read all afternoon & dined with Lin evg. Long letter
from Edgar about Edie.

Went for drive at 12 o’c. Maudie came to lunch & tea., her leg bad with

Dear Roy home in time for luncheon. Spencer came in to lunch, drove
with me to (illeg) after. I went in to see Maud, found her with working
bees! Eve, Ruth, Winnie, Mrs. Elliot. In bed to breakfast still feel vy
seedy. Roy to eat dinner & to Covent Garden Ball after. Maud’s brass
shames mine.
Saturday 18 November
Mrs. Hunter’s at home after Jack’s wedding. Put off on account of Mrs.
H’s sister’s death. To Daly’s “San Toy”. Miss Sutton goes with us &
dines here after. Roy with us at theatre speachless, dined at Lincolns
Inn on route after. Miss Sutton left early.
Sunday 19 November
Mr. Douglas, Maud, dine here. Lin to Calais. Maud unable to come, in
bed X & cold. Baby came with Muriel & de la Penha. Harold, Miss Rose
Innes & Chilian Minister’s son called. Harold, Spencer & Mr Douglas
dined here. V. pleasant evg. Roy left for Oxford middle of dinner. Lin
enjoyed his trip.

Maud’s, brought her back, seemed seedy poor darling. She stayed till
4.30. Mr. Molesworth, Lady Weston, Mrs. Walkes, Sybil Grantham & baby
called. Je ne suis pas enchantée avec les nouvelles.
Wednesday 22 November
Dull morg. Slept v. badly felt sick for 3 hours in night. Pas grand choses
les filles. At 2.30 to stores bought dressing jacket 14/- & net for sleeves
2/3. Found darling M. here on return, better, & dining with the Hohlers
tonight. Sat with Lin until he dressed. Also called & fitted at Miss
Fletcher’s.
Thursday 23 November
Lin dined at Sir Henry Thompson’s, enjoyed it muchly. Lord Morris, Mr.
Costin & 4 others there. Alone. Je ne crois pas que les nouvelles filles
me conviendront en future je ne donnerai pas autant de gages.
Friday 24 November
Called & saw darling Maud. Found Ruth & Hilda & Eve Coward there.
Drove Evelyn home. Lin & I dined together he finished work earlier.

Came by Granville to Mrs. Noott, Poplar House, Broadstairs. Dossie met
me. Found house much larger & much nicer in every way than I
expected, most convenient & warm. Little Bay, boy of 9, laid up with bad

Lovely day. Long walk with Dossie morning. Mr. Treves came to see me
2 o’c. Weakness & cold due entirely to nervous prostation, to rest in bed
as much as possible. In all afternoon, cough tiresome. Col. Ford called.
News of another big battle, Lord Methuen near Modder River our troops
victorious.
Thursday 30 November
Walked along parade with Dossie, rather too far, felt tired. Miss Denne
came to supper & sang, pretty but common little thing. Read “Life &
Times of Savonarola” v. interesting.

Rested all day, so afraid of little F. coming on. Letters each day from
dear Lin & Maudie.

Mr. Blackburn’s at home. Lovely day. Walked to Parade with Dossie &
sat in shelter, lovely & so warm out of wind, cold in it. Mrs. Noott & D. to
(illeg) Bay & self for drive round Westwood. Dreadfully altered,
brickfields & labourers cottages all round it. Never wish to see it again.

& crisp. Maud & Muriel for drive in her cart. V. rude little girl, Maud v.
angry. The rest skated. Sat in drawing room evening.
