If office temperatures reach 32°C, productivity decreases by 29% Oxfordshire CC estimated that heat damage caused during three very hot days in July 2006 amounted to £3.6 million, about 50% of its annual highway maintenance budget. 26,080 early winter deaths in 2010/11 and 2.6m since 1950 What can be achieved… Islington Borough Council • Home energy visitor programme (till 2015) • Providing advice on avoiding overheating and stay cool packs • 91% coverage in July-Sep 2013 • SHINE network Hull CC & West Sussex • Carry out risk assessments of key services • An adaptation plan produced for each service • Now working with external partners Severe Weather Monitoring System • First developed for Kent CC • Web based tool to help capture costs • 27 councils trialling it at the moment • Useful evidence base for future planning Cheshire West & Chester • Working with SME’s to become resilient • Events, resilience health checks, publications • Community resilience through pilot • Action plans, tool kits, contacts Climate Local ‘offer’ • Provide support, resources and signposting service for councils – dedicated materials for Cllr portfolio holders and officers • Champion good practice through a range of different media, such as events, progress reports, website features, and e-bulletins etc. • Developing the Climate Local network as a forum to share learning amongst councils – open to all councils – Conference event in Spring 2015 • Partnership working with other organisations such as Climate Ready, Climate UK, Defra, DECC etc. Thank you!
