Technology Offer Environmental-friendly process to obtain a large variety of monomers and specific (bio)polylmers Summary Brussels research center has developed a process which allows to obtain a wide variety of monomers and of (bio)polymers which can themselves be functionalized for specific properties (like anti-bacteria, adhesive, etc). The center is interested in license or commercial agreements with technical assistance with base chemicals producers, chemical convertors, polymer and/or biopolymer manufacturers willing to manufacture and commercialize the functionalized compounds and/or specific (bio) polymers. The technology encompasses two key elements: 1) an environmental-friendly process for synthesis of a multifunctional unsaturated compound (transformation of vegetable oils into polyols via: - use of atmospheric oxygen (very low cost) as an epoxydation reactant Catalytic process : a) low energy consumption and b) use of a solid catalysis which can be recycled by filtration (low energy, low cost) - 100% atomic use of components: no side-reactions or by-products - Solvent free process - Use of biomass as feedstock 2) the use of these compounds as monomers for preparing polymers or biopolymers like polyurethanes or specifics polyesters. These polymers are an ideal substitute to chemical or petrochemical based polymers. The invention has been demonstrated at laboratory level. Current and Potential Domain of Application: The technology can be used for the: Development / Production of monomers - Development / Production of polymers with specific properties. - Development / Production of biopolymers with specific properties For applications like: Oleo-chemical industries Paint and Ink formulators Polyurethane foam applications (building, automotive, ...) Polyesters Advantages and Innovations Flexibility of the process allows to obtain a wide variety of monomers and therefore a large variety of (bio)-polymers which can themselves be functionalized for specific properties (like anti-bacteria, adhesive, …) The benefits of the process are: - Atmospheric oxygen as reactant Low energy process (catalysis) - Solvent free technology - Atom economy (atomic efficiency : 100 %) - Polymers with reactive organic functions Technical Specification or Expertise Sought Ref: 13 BE 0213 3SGX Page 1 of 3 Printed: 08 July 2013 - Type of partner sought: industry, SMEs - Specific area of activity of the partner: base chemicals producers, chemical convertors, polymer manufacturers and/or biopolymer manufacturers - Task to be performed by the partner sought: to manufacture (pilot scale then industrial scale) and commercialize the products here-above specified (i.e. the functionalized compounds and/or specific polymers) with the technical assistance of the research department.
