ABBOT BEYNE NEWS INSERT PICTURE HERE Summer Term 2013 Welcome to our final newsletter of another action packed year. Our newsletter is in celebration of academic, sporting, cultural and extra-curricular successes and highlights the wide-ranging opportunities that are open to all our students. The Summer Term is also a time to say goodbye to a number of our staff. Some are retiring, whilst others are moving on to new schools. They have all played an enormous part in our school life and we have valued each and every one of them. I wish them the very best in the next part of their journey. In addition, I would like to thank all the Abbot Beyne Staff for their hard work and contributions to the successes of our year. We have celebrated student successes in our Celebration Assemblies. It was wonderful that so many family and friends could join us and I was thrilled to see so many students winning awards. Enjoy reading our newsletter and I hope you all have a happy, safe and restful holiday. I look forward to working with you all again in September. Annabel Stoddart HEADTEACHER GOVERNORS NEWS! The Governors are very sad to have to say goodbye to their Clerk of the past nine years, Mrs Janet Rowe, who will be leaving at the end of The Summer Term. Janet began working in The Abbot Beyne Office in 1987 until 1997 when she was appointed Personal Assistant to the then Headteacher, David Marriot. She continued in this role for the next two Headteachers, Christine Thompson and Annabel Stoddart. She became Clerk to the Governors in 2004. She has always proved to be an asset who has been so supportive of The Governors and has been both organised and extremely efficient. Her work has certainly helped the Governing Body to be as effective as it is. Janet will be sorely missed but she leaves with our sincere thanks and best wishes for the future. Mrs Margaret Fletcher CHAIR of the GOVERNING BODY So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye…………. Sadly, at the end of The Summer Term we will be saying goodbye to some fantastic staff members! Punctuation is important as it helps structure writing and make meaning clear. Here are three ways you can help your child to improve the way they use punctuation: 1. Ask them to identify punctuation on signs, in menus etc. Ask them what job the punctuation is doing. 2. Encourage them to spend a few extra minutes at the end of their homework to check they have used punctuation correctly. Your child will have their own punctuation target to focus on. 3. Create a blog or diary to keep over the holidays. other’s punctuation! They were not disappointed! As always, this funny but tragic musical was able to move our students to both laughter and tears and has hopefully provided them with lots to talk about in their GCSE English Literature exam. The experience was made all the more enjoyable when a member of the public commented on the great behaviour of our students. Well done Year 11! NATIONAL WRITING COMPETITION Mrs Timson’s Year 8 English Group have written stories for a National Writing Competition and this is Matthew Shenton’s entry:THE TRANSFORMATION The metallic grey hair was only the start. My feet suddenly ached; I looked down at them and a full silver block of hair flopped down over my eyes. As I tugged it back over my forehead I severed my cheek. Cursing, I glanced down at my hands or rather claws and paws. They had grown to a double their usual size; sprouting greasy, dog-like fur as I watched. Confused and in pain I felt a great rumble in my throat and attempted to cry out. All that escaped my now elongated mouth was a slow, eerie howl. Gazing up at the steel grey rumbling clouds, I noticed a full moon……. I tasted blood. I felt my vision obscure. My back arched. I heard my clothes tear as I flung my arms wide and roared like hell on earth. I looked around to find nothing but trees. How did I manage to get in the forest? I had to satisfy my blood lust somehow. My human instinct kicked in and I told myself to stop. But the wolf inside took over. My transformation was not yet over; it needed to be complete. My gums tore and shoes ripped. I sprinted to the nearby lake and arrived faster than I thought. I stared into the silent, still pool. I had developed fangs. The sky was now restless and aggravated; the stars were shrouded. Something stuck into my trousers, causing me great pain. In agony, I ragged them away; out sprang a tail. It grew until it was as long as my now muscular arm. Everywhere I looked on my creature body there was fur. The sky gave way and a rainstorm commenced. Sleet, thunder, lighting, rain, hail, it was like the wrath of God. I wouldn’t blame him. My new form was…...the work of Beelzebub. I was just wishing that it wasn’t permanent. I couldn’t hold it in any longer. I needed blood. Getting down on all fours, I galloped at least fifty miles before finding a cottage with a light on. I didn’t try for stealth. I didn’t try to enter. Seeing the shadow on the wall, I could tell that the figure was sitting. I smashed through the window and grabbed them. Hurling them to the floor, I stumbled on top and savaged their torso; my first taste of another humans blood. I pulled away and gazed upon their face. It was……..my younger brother. At Abbot Beyne GCSE & A’Level Performances This first part of this term was focussed around GCSE and A’Level exam preparation. Students had worked hard practising solo and ensemble pieces, as well as their compositions. Although some students may have been a little nervous to begin with, they settled into their performances and it was certainly an enjoyable few days for me, Mr Moon (Accompanist) and Mr Archer (Recording Technician) as we got to hear students performing at their best! BTEC The Year 10 class are now preparing hard for their end of year concert. They have chosen two songs to perform as a whole class, as well as individual and smaller group numbers. We are looking forward to sharing their hard work from throughout the year with parents and friends later this term. The Year 12s are working hard to try and get numerous projects from this year all neatly tied up. They are also rehearsing hard for their solo and ensemble performances. As part of the course students have to choose pieces that challenge them; we look forward to hearing their successes also later this term. VOCAL GROUP We were delighted to be able to perform to our visitors from Slovakia as part of the ‘Welcome’ event on their first day at Abbot Beyne! However, students had decided that they wanted to do a new song and routine; with a short time scale this was a challenge, but as always, the hard work, dedication and determination of the group paid off. They produced a creative and exciting routine to ‘Walking on Sunshine’ and performed it alongside our old favourite ‘Viva la Vida’. With some time for polishing, we look forward to performing (and seeing) ‘Walking on Sunshine’, alongside other new performances, at the Summer Concert on Wednesday, 10th July at The Evershed Building. Vocal Group continues to meet on a Thursday lunchtime in The Music Room and new members are always welcome! INSTRUMENTLE ENSEMBLE The instrumentalists are also busy rehearsing for The Summer Concert. We look forward to preparing our James Bond themed pieces, as well as one of my old favourites that I recently rediscovered ‘Chorale and Rock-Out’. This piece in particular gives the opportunity to show off individual instruments, as well as being great fun to play! SUMMER CONCERT By the time you receive this newsletter The Summer Concert will have been and gone; writing in advance, I am sure the students as always, will do themselves proud! Miss S Wenn - MUSIC DEPARTMENT P.E. NEWS CRICKET NEWS We have two excellent cricket squads this year. We have combined Years 7, 8, 9 & 10 with the older year groups taking on the leading roles to organise and captain the teams. This they have done brilliantly well! Special mention should be given to three Year 8 students Itisham Kiani, Kasib Azhar and Muhammad Aman, plus Harry Bryan and Hussnane Kiani in Year 10. They have been a massive help in organising teams and also in their all round play. Both teams have only completed one fixture each due to games being cancelled, or abandoned , due to rain. They won their games convincingly with Year 7 & 8 beating William Allitt by 5 wickets and Years 9 & 10 beating Granville by 4 wickets. Their bowling, fielding and batting were all of a high standard and never gave the opposition a chance to win. They were truly team wins with different players contributing in taking wickets, scoring runs and fielding. Well done to you all! YEAR 8 FOOTBALL ABBOT BEYNE 2012 - 2013 BURTON SCHOOL ‘B’ LEAGUE WINNERS! A very well done to our Year 8 boys who won The Burton Schools ‘B’ Football League 2012 - 2013! They are a fantastic group who work hard for each other and are very committed to School Sport. The boys won all of their games and showed great team spirit throughout. Mrs C Winfield SUBJECT LEADER in P.E. ABBOT BEYNE ROUNDERS FESTIVAL On Tuesday 25th June students from Burton Primary Schools visited Abbot Beyne to take part in a Community Rounders Festival. Students in Years 5 & 6 at Holy Trinity, Holy Rosary, Tower View, Winshill Village & Abbots Bromley played in mixed school teams for the afternoon, making new friends and developing their teamwork through competitive sport. Students displayed fantastic team spirit during the afternoon and were encouraged to play fair inspired by the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games with team names such as Inspiration, Determination and Courage but to name a few. Abbot Beyne Year 7 students acted as Team managers on the day, helping the Year 5 & 6 students to learn new rules and motivate them to do their best. A few of Abbot Beyne Year 9 students have been working towards their preliminary Rounders Umpire Award, this was the ideal opportunity for them to put their new skills to the test and umpire all of the matches. Students in Year 11 organised the event from start to finish alongside Miss Turpin, they did a fantastic job in making the event a success! Kelsey, HISTORY DEPARTMENT NEWS KENILWORTH CASTLE On Friday 14th June, Year 10 History students visited Kenilworth Castle. The aim of the visit was to investigate how the castle worked as a defensive tower, following its first design as a motte and bailey castle. We then saw how the castle had developed into a palace fit for visits from Elizabeth I. The students had a great time despite the torrential downpour! The students are now equipped to start their controlled assessment. Mrs K Green SUBJECT LEADER in HISTORY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ENGLISH & SLOVAKIAN EXCHANGE The first week back after half term was met with excitement for many of our Year 9 students. Our Slovakian friends visited our school as part of the exchange we established earlier this year. Our visitors were greeted in Evershed Hall with a traditional afternoon tea and a display of the talent we have in our school, including a trampoline display, singing & dancing from our vocal group and other musical numbers. Following this, we went on our way to The Peak District exploring the dramatic landscape of Stanage Edge, the plague village of Eyam and a quick stop at Bakewell. The following day the students set off for the thrills and excitement of Alton Towers via a quick visit to Croxden Abbey. On Friday, we spent the morning in school. Students used clay and other materials to design and make a lasting piece of work which represents their friendship and the friendship we have built between the two schools. The work is currently being fired and will soon be mounted. Students then cooked traditional British and Slovakian food, Cottage Pie and Potato Casserole which we all enjoyed together at lunchtime. P-T-O INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ENGLISH & SLOVAKIAN EXCHANGE Continued……… After lunch we headed for an afternoon in Stratford-upon-Avon seeing the traditional historic buildings of Shakespeare and Tudor England. An alternative history of Stratford was also seen during our ghost walk. This was very factual but also very scary at times! Saturday was our last day together and students chose to spend the morning shopping in Burton before they returned to school for their coach journey home. EUROPEAN PEN-PALS Students in Year 10 have continued to send letters to their friends in France & Spain. During French lessons the students have been working on a DVD to send to their friends across The Channel. The aim of the DVD is to introduce themselves and different aspects of the school through French. Year 7 students have received their first letters from France (in response to previous ones sent). They are currently writing letters in French lessons which will be posted out to France before the school holidays start. TWINNIE Students in Year 9 & 10 have taken part in a project through the Etwinning Website. The aim of this project is to share photos and stories of the character Twinnie, a doll, as she makes her way through Europe. Twinnie started her journey in Bulgaria before travelling to Italy, Spain & France. Whilst here in the UK, we took Twinnie to Kenilworth Castle and on our visits with our Slovakian friends. Some of the photographs and images can be found on the Etwinning website. Twinnie is now on her way to Poland before continuing her travels through Lithuania and Turkey. Mrs K Green - History Department YEAR 12 EU WINGS & HORIZONS On the 16th June, 10 of our Year 12 students were privileged to take part in the EU funded Wings & Horizons Project at Cosford Museum. We were the only UK school to be selected in The Young Curators Project which linked Abbot Beyne students with students from France, Germany & Poland. The week long project based at the museum involved students designing a permanent display for Hangar 1 at the museum. During the first day students were introduced to the museum and each other. This was done through team building activities and discovery groups, some of the activities included egg parachuting and writing a song with the title Travelling Through Europe, using words from each of the 4 languages. On the first evening a cultural fare from each of the 4 countries showed everyone a different aspect of the countries involved. P-T-O YEAR 12 EU WINGS & HORIZONS Continued…….. We were fortunate enough to see the Dornier being restored and we were the first group to have photographs taken with it. Throughout the week friendships were formed between students and the research in the museum and the skills of teamwork, creativity, independence and problem solving were developed and strengthened. The display will be on show for 12 months and reflects our students hard work and creativity. Below are some of the images created by our students. P-T-O YEAR 12 EU WINGS & HORIZONS Continued…….. The displayed was unveiled on Friday evening, 21st June, to Parents/Carers and visitors. Students then gave presentations of their weeks experience. The students have already been in contact with each other. We look forward to being invited to participate this project again next year. Mrs K Green HISTORY DEPARTMENT Adele Horton as YEAR 7 NEWS What a fast and furious first year it has been for our Year 7s! They have been swept on a wave of exciting and challenging activities. These have given them many opportunities, to test out TRICs, their focus for learning Teamwork, Reflection, Independence & Creativity have been the key skills they have learned and have been firmly established in our Competency Curriculum for Year 7. This theme related approach to active learning has enabled our enthusiastic students to explore the world around them. They studied of Chocolate, culminating in a very enjoyable visit to Cadbury World! The Statue Of Liberty They researched different countries and mounted a fantastic World Fair in Evershed Hall, inviting our local community to come and share what they had discovered, especially tasting the authentic food they had made! Two of the stars of the show were Mr Atkinson dressed as Captain America and Adele Horton as the Statue of Liberty! Another highlight of Competency Curriculum was the result of the work done around a very important historic date 1066. Our students re-enacted The Battle of Hastings on our playing fields, which was recorded and made into an epic video! In the last two weeks Year 7 have started to look more closely at our local history by making use of the guide produced by The Youth Parrish Council on Winshill Walks. Mr Atkinson is Captain America P-T-O YEAR 7 NEWS Continued……... Year 7 have entered wholeheartedly into each of the challenges they have been given, from the Whitemoor Lakes experience to our recent visit to Derby University, opening their eyes to possible goals for their future. The feedback from our students from this was overwhelmingly enthusiastic and has certainly got them thinking! Throughout the year students have taken part in a range of extra-curricular music and sports activities including Street Dance, football, netball, rounders, Vocal Group, Bugsy Malone and concerts but to name a few! Looking ahead, they have made positive links with them at their schools to share with them what it is like at secondary school, hosting a Competency Curriculum Day and leading a Rounders Tournament at Abbot Beyne. In all of these activities our Year 7 students have shown themselves to be capable, responsible and demonstrate excellent leadership skills, providing role models for the young ones anticipating the next stage of their lives in secondary school. P-T-O Mrs Stoddart, Mr Hall & Year 7 celebrating their rounders success! Below Year 7 supporting Children in Need YEAR 7 NEWS Continued……... In all of these activities our Year 7 students have shown themselves to be capable, responsible and demonstrate excellent leadership skills, providing role models for the young ones anticipating the next stage of their lives in secondary school. It is therefore with great pride that I will say goodbye to them at the end of term, confident that they will continue to develop as members of our school community in Year 8, supporting each other and the new Year 7s in September. They will be given every opportunity to extend their TRICs skills as they continue their learning journey in Year 8, following the new Thematic Curriculum. CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL YEAR 7 & GOOD LUCK AND SUCCESS IN EVERYTHING YOU STRIVE TO ACHIEVE! Finally, I would like to thank Parents & Carers past and present for your children and your support. This is my final term at Abbot Beyne after 25 very happy and action packed years. I would also like to thank all of my colleagues for their unending support and friendship. Something I have told many students over the years is. “It takes teamwork to make the dream work” - and it does! I wish you all a happy and relaxing summer! Mrs Merrick - Pastoral Leader of Year 7 Good Luck Year 7 YEAR 8 NEWS! I would like to begin by congratulating the Year 8 Football Team on being crowned champions of their football league. This shows what a season long dedication can bring you. As we are coming towards the end of the year we are all looking forward to our 100 Club reward trip and the Celebration Assembly. Year 8 have proven themselves to be excellent European citizens this term by taking part in their final Deep Learning Day. Our focus was the European Union and learning about the other countries involved in it. Each group was given a different European country to research. They then had to create a presentation about heir country to win votes from the rest of the year group. Students danced, sung and created videos about their specific country. The overall winning country was Croatia who won the crowd over with their comedy routines. Throughout this year I have been impressed with the year group’s dedication to all aspects of school life and their hard work and focus. I am looking forward to moving into Year 9 with them and sharing their continuing development at Abbot Beyne. Miss J Wood PASTORAL LEADER of YEAR 8 YEAR 9 NEWS! Thursday 27th June was the final of the three PHSE Deep Learning Days, this time based around democracy. Students have previously had a lot of input from outside speakers but this Deep Learning Day centred on them and their own opinions and ideas. The day began with an assembly from myself and Mrs Stoddart on the move to Linnell and the start of their Key Stage 4 at Abbot Beyne. Students then had a tour of the building (which even some of staff found enlightening!) and were asked to write a letter to their future selves about their own expectations and hopes. The rest of the day focussed on the importance of rules and who decides them and it was good to see the students engaged in the decision making process, although I am not sure I would risk a stay on many of their desert islands. They gained a better understanding of what is meant by democracy and how a democratic society works. Yet again Year 9 showed the skills that they have developed at Abbot Beyne in both speaking and listening and developing their ideas further by listening to the advice and input of others. All staff commented on the behaviour and participation of their groups and the day was a huge success. Mrs E Hall PASTORAL LEADER of YEAR 9 YEAR 10 NEWS! YEAR 10 DEEP LEARNING DAY - THURSDAY 27th JUNE Congratulations to all Year 10 students for taking such an active part in our Citizenship themed Deep Learning Day. It was fantastic to see Year 10 students get so involved in our group activities related to World Poverty and Crime. They have produced some outstanding pieces of Art & Media work which we will share in future assemblies and display in school. As ever, they received many compliments from our visiting speakers, particularly those who joined us from Keele & Staffordshire Universities, who bought us the University Information & Guidance Roadshow. I look forward to seeing some of the photographs from the day on our website soon! Well done Year 10! YEAR 10 MOCK EXAMINATIONS Congratulations to our Year 10 students on successfully completing their Mock Examinations. I have been very pleased with their maturity during this period and am encouraged that they have had this opportunity to experience what their final GCSE examinations will be like as Year 11 students. YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE At the time of writing this Year 10 students who opted to secure a Work Experience placement have completed their preparations for the week of 15th - 19th July. I would like to take this opportunity to wish them a successful and rewarding experience. Should your child be ill at any point during the week then please inform the employer as well as school of any absence. Mrs C Catterall - PASTORAL LEADER of YEARS 10 & 11 WELCOME YEAR 9 TO LINNELL On Thursday, 27th June we welcomed the majority of Year 9 students to The Linnell site for their Deep Learning Day. All Year 9 lessons are now timetabled to take place in Linnell. This is an important part of our transition programme from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4, giving Year 9 students the time and opportunity to get used to the site in order for them to make a successful start to their Key Stage 4 courses in September. I am looking forward to getting to know all Year 9 students and working with them over the next two years. Pictured above are some Year 9 students during a Come As You Please Day earlier this year CONGRATULATIONS TO YEAR 11 Many congratulations to our Year 11 students who have now completed all their final GCSE examinations. I have been very impressed with their hard work and commitment to their studies, inparticular the revision sessions that they attended before each GCSE examination. It was a pleasure to mark their final full-time week in school with them with our leaver’s picnic & final assembly. I look forward to marking the end of the examination period with them at our Prom at Tutbury Castle. (Please see the next page for Year 11 photographs). YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY FIELDTRIP The Year 10 students have been on their fieldtrips this term, conducting investigations to help them complete their Controlled Assessment tasks. Half the year went down to Devon over a weekend and visited Slapton Sands, a Coastal Bar, to look at the process of Longshore Drift and how it changes the shape of the beach. They conducted their investigation and also visited the seaside town of Salcombe whilst there. The rest of the year group visited Carding Mill Valley for the day. They completed the hike to the top of the hills to find the source of the river and see Lightspout Waterfall. They then did a series of experiments to see if the river channel gets wider and deeper at different sites down the river. All the students on both trips were exceptionally well behaved and were a credit to Abbot Beyne. They are currently writing up their controlled assessment in lessons. Miss Maiden - Geography Department 1 0 0 C L U B For the fourth year in a row students in The 100 Club were rewarded with a trip to the cinema on Wednesday, 3rd July. However, this year saw the largest number so far. 354 students, being invited to see one of three films at Uttoxeter Cinebowl. After meeting in Evershed Hall the students plus staff set off in seven coaches to see scary, funny and action packed films on offer and after huge volumes of drinks and popcorn were purchased we settled down for the main features. The cinema staff commented on the fabulous behaviour and manners of Abbot Beyne students and hope that we will return. I hope that all students enjoyed themselves and will strive to be part of The 100 Club again next year. Last week, one of our students was knocked off his bicycle at the junction of Bearwood Hill Road and Newton Road. In addition, some neighbours have highlighted the careless way in which some youngsters are crossing this road. Please can you impress upon your children the need to take special care at this junction and to use the pedestrian crossings at the lights, rather than trying to cross directly from Bearwood Hill. GET AROUND FOR A £1 THIS SUMMER! Apply free online for your Staffordshire Card at www.yourstaffordshirecard.info any bus journey starting or ending in Staffordshire for only £1.
