I’m not advocating resolutions as we begin 2016. We don’t need another reason to feel guilty. But I am advocating that we take a moment to consider those activities and people that give meaning to our lives. Perhaps it would be good to be more intentional about what is important to us; not so casual or indecisive. Can there be any sadder words in the English language than “I wish I had?” On the subject of the New Year, January is named after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and transition. The name came from the Latin for “door” since January is the door to the year. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to both the past and the future. Our faith causes us to look back to God’s blessings, even as we look forward to the year 2016. This will be a year of transition for our churches as we pray for the next pastor to minister here. Looking backward, we have much for which to praise God. Many lives have been touched through the witness of the churches over the years. We can also celebrate how God has enabled our churches to work together in ministry in this area and around the world through missions. As we enter the New Year, we can learn from David’s prayer in 1 Chronicles 29:10-13. He acknowledged in this prayer that everything belongs to God. Our times and possessions are in His hands. We are invited, like David, to praise God for what He gives us through Jesus Christ from the bounty of His hands. David also recognized that all human existence is transient, “we are aliens and strangers in your sight” (v.15). Finally, he recognized that if we hold on to faith in this coming year, it is only because of God’s intervening grace (v.18). Our faith must be grounded in the One who inhabits eternity. We know by faith that His purposes will be fulfilled this New Year in our lives, in our churches, and in our world. My prayer for each of us is that God will open our eyes to see a future where He reigns. In the face of the unknown, may we accept His Word to us: “Be strong and courageous; do not be terrified; do not be discouraged; for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). Thursday evening Bible study We would like to invite you to our home for a Bible study on Thursdays at 7 pm. The subject of our study will be New Testament characters. We will need continued support to pay for cemetery mowing and snow plowing. ST. PETER LADIES AID NEWS The Ladies Aid met November 5th in the church's new addition. Knowing that missions were very meaningful to Pastor Keith, we gave a monetary gift to St. Peter's Mission Fund in his name upon his retirement. We discussed our upcoming chili supper on April 19th with serving from 4 to 7pm. We had our annual Christmas luncheon, Dutch treat, on Dec. 9th and Pastor Howard and Pat joined us at the Altoona. The Ladies Aid voted to give $2000. to the Building Fund and we will meet again in the spring. We invite ladies of the church to join us. We have no set meeting schedule but feel that we provide some important roles within our church. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t let the world fool you in thinking it’s not true. Things in the textbooks can be wrong. When I was in High School I learned about a prehistoric man named Nebraska man as it turned out, was based on nothing more than a pig’s tooth. Bad science or deception.
