SHORT COURSE MATERIALS LIST
FOUNDATI ON AND I NTERMEDIATE
PAI NTI NG CONNECT
Students must supply their ow n draw ing and painting equipment and materials.
MATERI ALS
Please find below a list of recommended materials for your course. These items can be
purchased from most art materials shops (ask for a student discount if they do one), or if
you can manage to come to Aberdeen, from Gray’s Art Materials Shop (at a discount
w hen show ing your student I D card).
EQUI PMENT
For this course an easel is ideal, but not essential. A draw ing board (A2 or bigger) can
be propped up on a chair or table instead. Again, a good quality board is ideal, but a
smooth synthetic material such as MDF is adequate.
A basic sketchbook will be required as a ‘Visual Diary’ to record ideas and thoughts. This
is not required immediately, and your tutor w ill explain it online in the first w eek or tw o.
The follow ing materials are required for the initial 4 classes:
Paper

Sev eral sheets of A2 quality w hite cartridge paper (130mg or
heav ier).
Pencils

Good quality soft pencil e.g. 2B.
Willow Charcoal

Sev eral sticks or a small pack, size thin.
Conté Crayon

Black, brow n, w hite or w hite chalk pastel.
Paint

Gouache or acrylic: black, burnt umber, w hite.
Palette

A suitable mixing tray or palette (at least 10”x8” approx.,
bigger if possible). Any non-porous surface w ill do. The
palette should hav e a large, flat mixing area - not indiv idual
'w ells'. 'Stay-w et' palettes are useful w ith acrylics, but not
essential.
Brushes

Minimum fiv e medium brushes, long-handle synthetic or hoghair (size 4-8, any shape), plus one round brush size 1. Suitable
soft or stiff brushes may be used for gouache.

Essentials






Masking tape.
Putty rubber.
Sharpener.
A suitable mixing tray or palette (at least 25 x 20cm approx.).
2 containers for w ater (e.g. jam jars or cans).
Paint rag(s).
Further adv ice on materials w ill be prov ided online as the course progresses.
