Networking Event Checklist
Business Cards
So many times, I meet someone at a networking event who doesn’t have their business
cards, and I internally shake my head. Always, always, ALWAYS have your business cards
with you!
Rehearse
Rehearse your elevator pitch to capture the audience. This can be tough to get down, but
don’t worry. With much practice and tweaking, you will get it down...and it will be magical.
Focus on something unique about yourself and your business.
(ex : “Hi I am Steve "The Hurricane," I represent XYZ Home Care. We are the BEST
Home Care Company for Dementia patients. I am passionate about helping the elderly and
making a difference in the lives of those in need of care. I also enjoy Bruce Springsteen and
long walks on the beach”)
Smell Check
Gum, mint, mouthwash, cologne, perfume . The last thing you want to be known as is the
stinky person with the smelly breath. I recommend you keep a pack of gum or mints, and a
bottle of body freshener in your car, for those just-in-case moments.
Game Plan
Here is where I see many people fail with networking, and end up saying networking is a
waste of time. That is only correct if you are not doing it right and that means not having a
game plan. Go into every event knowing you want to talk to X number of people, and if all
goes well walk out with X number of potential relationship-building contacts. Have a plan,
work the plan!
Smile
Have a positive attitude and a smile . We all know a lame duck when we see one, and so
does everyone else. Really simple…DON’T BE A LAME DUCK! Be present, be positive
and most importantly...SMILE! People will always talk to you if you are confident and have
an inviting expression on your face.
BONUS: Arrive Early, Leave last
Get to a networking event 15 to 20 mins early, whenever possible. This will often give you
some one-on-one time with the host and get some great information. Stay the whole time
and be among the last to leave. This gives you time to mingle and not feel rushed. Get the
most out of the networking event!
