african bible colleges FROM THE FOUNDERS When people hear the name “African Bible Colleges,” we want them to think “EXCELLENCE.” God’s Word encourages us to “approve those things that are excellent in order to be pure and blameless.” Here the apostle Paul is calling on Christians to examine in study and to execute in lifestyle those things which are excellent! That is our objective at African Bible Colleges – to examine those things that are excellent and to encourage excellence in daily living. In order to achieve our goal of excellence, we strive to accept into the student boy those who show promise of excellence, both spiritually and academically, and then place them in an environment of excellence – excellent standards, excellent facilities, excellent curriculum and excellent staff. Our colleges aspire to offer the same quality of Christian post-secondary education that was previously only available abroad. With excellence as our goal, it is our aim to pour out into the evangelical churches and mission organizations across Africa committed Christian leaders who will live their lives righteously, preach the gospel powerfully, teach the Word thoroughly, and witness to their fellow Africans courageously. In 1992, after 16 years of operation, the original ABC campus had to be closed because of the civil war. After meetings with Liberia’s newly elected president, Mrs. Ellen Sirleaf, and her vice president, theis flagship campus of ABC was officially reopened in 2008. Many volunteer teams aided in restoring the beautiful campus, and in May 2012, twenty years after being closed, our college in Liberia saw the first graduating class since reopening. #Chapel #Liberia LOCATION The college is located in th community of Yekepa, high in the beautiful mountains of easter Liberia. The towering Nimba Mountains filled with some of the richest iron ore in the world stood like a protecting giant behind the College and the City of Lights, as Yekepa was known, surounded the campus. The campus was soon to be a bustling little city in itself, with palm trees lining the road and pathways, and the students moving up and down those paths as they rushed to classes or means at the dining hall. The story of this emerging college is an amazing series of God’s providence.” - Nell Chinchen We encourage you to be a part of this incredibly unique opportunity tha God has blessed many of our missionaries with. The Liberian people suffered over 13 years without education, freedom of speech, the ability to worship together, and preach the Gospel openly. They’ve just begun to pick up the pieces and open up avenues to re educate the population. Students in their fifties that were not able to graduate from ABC have returned to complete their education. Teachers at this college have the opportunity to help the future leaders of this country bring about positive change to further Christ’s kindgom. In 1994, the college in Lilongwe was given permission to begin the first prison ministry in the country. Stuents have also helped pioneer child-evangelism work, hospital visitation ministries, and village evangelism teams. Music ministry African Bible College has been blessed with many talented musicians. In Malawi, the ABC Choir holds two citywide cantatas each year, and the ABC Quartet can be heard singing almost evey Sunay in one of the local churches. sports ministry The students at African Bible College are also involved in a number of exciting sports ministries - including summer basketball camps, coaching high school students, and hosting Christian athletic teams from abroad. #PlayingSoccer “We can be so different culturally, but I’ve found that Christ can reveal our similarities through sports. And in Malawi’s case, soccer. The Malawians have an amazing passion for the game, but most importantly I’ve found that the students at ABC also share a passion for God. I’ve had the opportunity to see first hand what God is doing through one of the sports ministries at ABC. Several of the players on the soccer team and some graduates started a ministry in Malawi called “The Chisomo Idea.” “Chisomo” means “Hope” in English. This ministry uses the common ground of soccer in Africa as a tool to reach the youth of Malawi. Children are both vulnerable and impressionable, and the students at ABC realized this. They found a way to evangelize to the Malawian youth by combining soccer and the Gospel.” Students from the college participate in this ministry every week. -- Brandon Cozzolino #Worship #InThePrison #Orphan Ministry AfricanBibleColleges.net 15 abc christian academy #KidsInUniform vision Our aim at ABC Christian Academy is to bring children to Jesus Christ through an education that is Christian. Educators describe the early childhood years as the 4-14 window. These years, ages 4 to 14, are the years when children are most likely to come to know Christ. In fact, 80% of all people who come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior do so between the ages of 4 to 14. It is our goal that we influence these children, their parents, families, and country toward Jesus Christ. goals & objectives why teach in malawi? EDUCATION - If your desire is to provide quality education from a Christian perspective in a multi-cultural environment, this is the place for you! MINISTRY - The ABC Christian Academy is unique because it doesn’t JUST accept Christians into the school. The academy was founded because Dr. Paul and Laura Chinchen had a desire to provide a Christian education to the missionary children on the African Bible College compound. This couple desired for the Malawian children to benefit from the education of their own children. They wanted more than a mission school As a teacher at ABCCA, you would have the chance to witness to people from diverse religious backgrounds. CULTURE - The ABC Christian Academy’s student body is made up of 19 different nationalities. Your experience in the classroom would be very cultural and educational. For grades K-4 through grade 6 we have a Teaching Assistant mentor program. We place an African Bible College education graduate in the classroom with our missionary teacher for a 2-year internship. This allows our teachers to help guide and work side by side to help young teachers learn from a western style of education. In return, our graduates help our missionary teachers learn about Malawi, its people and its culture. This program helps give perspective and enhance the classroom experience. 1. The primary goal of the ABC Christian Academy is to provide a quality Christian education in a Christian environment for the Christian families of Lilongwe. This quality education will be implemented through the development of high standard facilities, the recruitment of qualified teachers incorporating quality curriculum and making Christ the center of every endeavor. 2. The ABC Christian Academy strives to function as an extension of the Christian family by creating an environment where loving and capable Christian teachers can cooperate closely with the parents in every phase of the student’s development. As Proverbs 22:6 reminds us, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” EXPERIENCE - The ABC Christian Academy is well-known for its many after school activities. We encourage our teachers to pursue a more well-rounded ministry by getting involved in our Upward Basketball, art program, yearbook club, band, show choir, swim team, drama and number of other athletic programs. The ABC Christian Academy also partners with Ballet Magnificat from Jackson, Mississippi for an after school ballet program that is bringing this beautiful art to Africa for children to learn and enjoy. 3. It is our desire that each student develop a personal faith in Christ, and that their education at the ABC Christian Academy enhance their spiritual growth and shape a Christ-like character. 4. The ABC Christian Academy seeks to give each student, through a broad range of social, spiritual, physical and mental activities, the opportunity to pursue growth in each of these areas and shape a Christ-like character. project teach #ClassroomSetting MISSIONS - To fulfill The Great Commission. In Matthew 28:1620 we are challenged by Jesus Himself to “make disciples of all nations” and to teach the nations everything that God has commanded us. AfricanBibleColleges.net OUTREACH - The African Bible College provides outreach ministries for the college students that we encourage our staff to participate in! Every Thursday groups of students will work in orphanages, minister in the prison, work with widows, provide medical care, and more. The ABC Christian Academy also works closely with Chitipi, a ministry of Children of the Nations. TRAVEL & ADVENTURE - Malawi is home to the third largest and deepest lake in Africa! And it’s only 3 hours away from Lilongwe. Many of our teachers will take weekend excursions to the lakeside or spend holidays there. Mount Mulanje is Malawi’s highest peek, reaching up to 3,002m. Located at the base of this large mountain are the beautiful tea plantations of Thyolo. This part of Malawi is definitely worth taking a trip to. Many staff members have been on safari in Zambia, climbed Mount Kilimonjaro in Tanzania, or white water rafted in Zimbabwe. Malawi’s neighboring countries offer some great experiences for those who are interested in traveling during the fall, winter, or Easter holidays. mission statement ABC Christian Academy is a Christ-centered, international school dedicated to sharing God’s love through quality education in a professional, caring environment. As a staff, we strive to equip our students: By modeling Jesus Christ and teaching the truth of God’s Word. By meeting the diverse academic, and social needs for our students. By presenting challenging curriculum in creative ways. Families and single teachers are provided with accommodation on the African Bible College mission within walking distance of the school in lightly furnished duplexes. The African Bible College, ABC Christian Academy, and ABC Community Clinic in Malawi are located on a large compound (50 acres), surrounded by a 6 foot brick wall with electric fencing and razor wire. ABC is protected by G4S, the local security personnel, and college student guards. Each house is also equipped with a panic button for emergency security service and burglar bars. The Academy has a fleet of four vehicles available for teacher use. Wireless Internet is also available on the campus. #AbcChristianAcademy #AcademyPlayground Our goal is to provide all single teachers with their own bedroom and bathroom. On few occasions, teachers will have a roommate. Duplexes come with appliances (stove, fridge, and washer/dryer facilities). All housing is connected to the main campus generator for power outages and a sizable back up water tower for each unit. food am i qualified? We prefer our teams of teachers to be certified. Most Academy teachers come straight out of university with a teaching credential. As a single missionary or a young married couple, it is sometimes easier to come to Africa. However, we also have teaching staff that are university graduates, but have a special talent or degree that is useful. We have had art majors teach art. If you are a computer major, then we can use you to teach computer. If you are a math major, then we can use you to teach middle/high school math. A number of grocery stores in the capital city of Lilongwe offer a large selection of South African products on the shelves. Some American brands can be recognized as well (Heinz, Kellongs, Nestle, etc). You will have access to things such as pasta, cereal, canned food items, rice, tea, coffee, beef, chicken, fish - even some frozen foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables are abundant at the local market. You can eat or cook like you would in America, but it may cost you more to find those comfort foods in Malawi. Bakeries in town supply fresh bread. Most missionaries prefer to drink the boxed or powdered milk off the shelves because it lasts longer. However, fresh milk is also available in town. If you are willing and able, we can use you. Moving overseas to teach in a new country and in a new culture can be scary but it is also full of blessings and rewards. Will you take that step of faith? Please consider helping to raise the standard of education in Malawi and come join us. The African Bible College does have a vegetable garden on campus that is accessible for all staff. There are a few good restaurants in town (Indian, Italian, Chinese) as well. The concept of “fast food” doesn’t exist in Malawi just yet. And of course, there are many local foods available to try! Some foods include “Nsima” (corn meal local staple), Nugumbies (flying termites) and more. Frozen and canned foods can be pricey but cooking fresh and from scratch is a talent you will develop. #ChapelTime AfricanBibleColleges.net medical insurance Each teacher is responsible for signing up for his or her medical insurance before leaving for the mission field. In the 15 years that the ABC Christian Academy has been open, only one teacher was evacuated due to an ectopic pregnancy. Finding insurance that covers emergency medical evacuation is a responsible precaution that is absolutely necessary. Please visit www.imglobal. com to sign up for international insurance. raising support All missionary teachers are required to raise their own support. We have established that single teachers can live comfortably off of $1200 a month. Once you have submitted your application online, you will be contacted by the stateside office and/or recruiter. The ABC home office staff will help you fill out a support quota worksheet in order to help you decide what your monthly expenses will be. Raising support can be intimidating and humbling. We are able to offer tuition at a lower rate than most international schools because our missionary teachers are self-supported. We have people on our team that can help you understand the process and walk you throughout this. As a missionary teacher you need the support of people praying for you and your ministry and you also need funding. However, we do not want finances to keep you from going to the mission field. The ABC Christian Academy will help its teachers with funding if necessary. We will match what you raise up to $600 per month. We also ask our teachers to fund raise for their round trip air ticket to Malawi (approximately $2,500.00) or a one time gift. If a teacher is having difficulty with this the Academy will help up to half (or $1,250.00) for the ticket). abc christian academy #Ambulance project heal program In a country where diseases like Malaria, Cholera, Bilharzia, and Typhoid Fever are commonplace, it is important to have reliable health care. In Lilongwe, booming population growth combined with poverty-level income has contributed to a health care system that is desperately underfunded and outdated. African Bible Colleges has built the first Christian Community Clinic in the capital city. This medical facility provides much needed quality health care for ABC students, missionaries, and faculty, as well as for the residents of the surrounding community. outpatient services We offer a low-cost “non-private” clinic to provide quality medical care at an affordable price. Students are now interning at the clinic and participating in weekly mobile clinics every Thursday afternoon. health education Health care in Africa is futile if it is not accompanied by education. It is an exciting opportunity for kids at our academy to help other children in Malawi, but we can’t do it alone -- we have also asked for help from people in the States. The children in villages not far from our mission often do not have the resources to purchase basic school supplies. Students are often compelled to share pencils and bits of paper. Additionally, most children walk at least a mile or two to school -- many of them barefoot, because they cannot afford decent shoes that will hold up to their daily commute on foot. Project Juembo is a unique opportunity for you to directly help someone who is attending school in Africa. We encourage you to participate by purchasing and filling a back pack with all the supplies a Malwian student would need to attend school. Project Cost: The cost to ship and distribute each back pack is $14.00. Should you feel compelled to make an additional donation to our missin in Malawi, we would be very grateful. Your gift will be ued to help cver travel expenses to villages or provide more bags for needy students. no one can do everything, but everyone can do something Project Juembo is both UNIQUE & INTERACTIVE: - Picking out supplies and loading the bak packs takes a lot of thought and preparation - We provide a luggage tag so you can insert your picture and the student in Africa can see who has helped them - We also ask tht you include your email address on the luggage tag so we can take a picture of the Malawian students wth his/ her new back pack, and email the photo back to you - The students attending the ABC Christian Academy will be involved in distributing the back packs in the villages - We ask that you and your families consider visiting Malawi in the summer to assist our mission in distributing the back packs in rural villages calling all kids - u.s. to malawi - interaction is key - a joy to give 25 the history of african bible colleges The vision for Christian colleges in Africa began in the hearts of Dr. and Mrs. John W. Chinchen. After spending seven years training pastors in the interior of Liberia, the Chinchens realized the great need for a Bible College that would meet the educational and spiritual needs ofte multitude of high school graduates emerging from an awakended Africa. In 1976, the vision became a reality when the Chinchens established Liberia’s first four-year Bible College. The college was designed to hold the highest international university standards an eet he qualifications to offer a bachelor of arts degree in Biblical studies. African Bible Colleges is chartered and registered as a Christian education institution and mission organization with the governments of Liberia, Malawi, Uganda, and the United States. President Dr. Paul Chinchen and Mrs. Laura Chinchen As the graduates in West Africa proved the value of quality Christian education - dedicated Christian leaders who could truly have a transforming impact onthe continent - it became imperative that this same ministry be made available to other parts of Africa. Thus, in 1988, African Bible Colleges established a second institution 4,000 miles away in the East African country of Malawi. Seventeen years later, in 2005, the third African Bible Colege was opened in the equatorial country of Uganda. Toay African Bible Colleges has more than 1,000 graduates serving in a wide spectrum of Christian ministries - from prgrm production at TransWorld Radio, orphan care with Children of the Nations, leadership positions at Campus Crusade (Life Ministries), and HIV ministries with World Relief, to planting churches in the former communist stronghold of Mozambique ABC graduates proving to be key components to the evangelization and transformation of Africa.
