THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE Programme Note The ANTIGONE, probably written in 441 B . C . , seems to have been a s highly regarded by S o p h o c l e s ' contemporaries a s it i s now, since the play w a s reputedly the c a u s e of h i s appointment a s one of the ten generals of Athens. In fifth-century Greece, to be a great artist w a s to be considered a great citizen. The central conflict between Antigone and Creon is a clear but not a simple one. It involves not only divine v s . human law, but the individual v s . the s t a t e , moral imperative v s . political n e c e s s i t y , and even romantic v s . r e a l i s t . Nor i s S o p h o c l e s ' resolution of that conflict a pat o n e . To consider Antigone " r i g h t " i s not to judge Creon merely " w r o n g " . His position, after a l l , i s quite justifiable on numerous grounds. As so often in Greek tragedy, however, the s p e c i a l circumstances and the particular character of the man unite to destroy him. But b e c a u s e he can learn and suffer, h e emerges from h i s trial truly a man. PRESENTS AS ITS ANNUAL STUDENT PRODUCTION Throughout the unfolding catastrophe the Chorus shows u s how we should view what is happening before our e y e s . At first wary of the concrete power of authority, they move finally to a statement of the bitter l e s s o n Creon h a s s o painfully learned: r\c i. • .L Ut h a p p i n e s s the crown And chiefest part Is wisdom, and to hold The gods in a w e . T h i s is the law That, seeing the stricken heart Of pride brought down, We learn when we are old. BY SOPHOCLES TRANSLATED BY E . F .
