Restore rights to refugees...
St Vincent de Paul Chief Executive Dr John Falzon has
urged Members of Parliament to put politics aside and devise a humane and fact-based policy on refugees.
“The Government and Opposition
both need to stop referring
to asylum seekers as ‘illegal
refugees’ - people have a legal
right to seek asylum under
the UNHCR 1951 Refugee
Convention signed by Australia,”
Dr Falzon said.
St Vincent de Paul (NT) are
deeply concerned about the
estimated 500 children that are in
mandatory detention in Darwin.
“Few of us in Australia could ever
imagine placing our children in
harms way. Our hearts should
be moved to the plight of these
kids. These children deserve our
compassion and our help.” NT
CEO Betti Knott said.
Sept 22 - Sandbar
Cricket Match
Variety NT and the Trailer Boat

CEO Sleepout
Over $100,000 was raised by 41 CEOs from around the
Territory. Holding the Sleepout at Fannie Bay Gaol is a
poignant reminder of the link between homelessness and
jail, and jail and homelessness.
Photos clockwise from left: CEOs heard from two speakers with first
hand experience of homelessness, one of whom was CEO participant
George Parkyn. Participants also heard from National CEO, John
Falzon and Fr Dan Benedetti who works with prisoners.
Tim Woods from Darwin Airports has slept out with his daughter Luca
for the third time running. 27% of Territory homeless are children.
Tony Schelling from Mortgage Choice woke up to a beautiful sunrise
on his slab of cement. For being one of the top fundraisers, Tony was
given a onesie by Best and Less.
CEO Participants at Fannie Bay Gaol: Cate Heys from DEEWR,
Camille Fong Lim from SRA Information Technology, George Parkyn
from Darwin Tours and Travel, Nadine Jones from CEO Sleepout major

Volunteering with Vinnies
Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and give
back to the Community.
Conferences
Conferences serve those in need
in their area. They visit people in
their homes, prisons, hospitals, at
our charity centres and organise
assistance when needed.
Vinnies Centres (Op Shops)
Volunteers welcome customers,
sort clothes, stock shelves,
serve customers and maintain
the presentation and friendliness
of stores.
Outreach
Ozanam House is an Outreach
centre for the homeless and
marginalised. Volunteers assist
with the preparation and serving
of breakfast and lunch.
Fundraising
Various fun events require
volunteers such as CEO
Sleepout and our book sale.
Youth volunteers at the CEO Sleepout
Sunset Outreach Service
Vinnies has food vans in Darwin
and Alice Springs that not only
offer a sandwich, soup and coffee,
but a chat and friendship to
homeless and estranged people.
Youth
Young people can volunteer to
help youth through the Buddies
program, Five2L8, youth camps,
the immersion program and
mentoring.

Pop-Up Op Shop at Barunga Festival
Hannah Toon has come all the way from South Yorkshire to
run the Vinnies Centre in Katherine. She loves working at
the Vinnies store and feels honoured to be working with the
team and supporting the community. In June she and her
partner Simon attended the Barunga festival with a ‘Pop-Up
Op Shop’.
Hannah loved being at Barunga
“We made around $250 during
the day, selling blankets, camping
and fishing gear, sleeping bags,
books, toys, jigsaws and the odd
bit of motor cross clothing.
“The feedback was fabulous,
many said it was a fantastic
idea, and we had a few “Wow!
Vinnies!” One lady said “I was
just thinking there should be an
Op shop, and here you are!!””
Hannah’s background is in
clothing and furniture retail and
in medical rehab equipment
procurement. Hannah moved
to Katherine when her partner
Simon found work as an
electrician in the town.
