Sukkot
Sukkot commemorates the time that the Israelites spent wandering in the desert after their exodus
from slavery in Egypt. It is also a harvest festival.
To remember the time that the Israelites spent in the deserts, Jews build a Sukkah, a temporary
shelter, and for the next week spend as much time in this shelter as possible. People will eat all their
meals in the Sukkah to fulfil the requirement to dwell in it, and may also sleep in it depending on the
weather and their health.
Sukkot is also an agricultural harvest festival , as it marks the end of the agricultural year.
Activity ideas
If you have space, you could construct an example of a
Sukkah. In the example below we have decorated a
plastic frame with paper leaves. You could use the
Sukkah to sit in and give a lesion about why Sukkot is
important to Jewish people.
