6 CO2 + 6 H2O C6H12O6 + 6 O2

7B Science (Mrs. Lee)
Study Guide for C2.1
1. What is Photosynthesis?
The process by which a cell captures energy in sunlight and uses it to make
food
• Photo = light
• Synthesis = put together
2. What happens during photosynthesis?
Stage 1: Capture energy from sunlight
• chlorophyll = pigment in chloroplasts
Stage 2: Make sugars
• Carbon Dioxide & Water is used by plants
• Produce sugars (food) & oxygen is released
• Stomata = small opening on the underside of leaves (where CO2 enters
the leave; where O2 exits the leave)
3. The Photosynthesis Equation
6 CO2 + 6 H2O
C6H12O6 + 6 O2
4. Autotrophs & Heterotrophs
Autotroph
Heterotroph
Make its own food
Make its food by photosynthesis
(using energy from the sun)
Producers on food chain
Cannot make its own food
Feed by eating others
(e.g. giraffe eating leaves)
Consumers on food chain
E.g. grass, tree
e.g. lion, zebra, giraffe
