THE MOTTO / SLOGAN
THE MASCOTS
A motto or slogan is developed for the Olympics to welcome the world.
It is used leading up to the Games and throughout the event in
promotional activities and at the sports venues.
The official 2014 Winter Games motto has been chosen to express the
character and personality of Russia’s Games:- Hot. Cool. Yours
Choose one of the mascots to write a newspaper report about. Imagine
you are going to have an interview with the mascot.
- Make a list of questions you would ask them. Use the descriptions
below to help you.
Visit talisman.sochi2014.com/en/ to find out more about them.
THE POLAR BEAR
He lives where everything is made of ice and snow. He
knows how to do many Winter Olympic Sports.
THE HARE
This busy forest creature takes part in all sporting events,
studies at the Forest Academy and loves to sing and
dance.
What do you think each word in the motto represents or reflects?
(for the answer visit www.sochi2014.com/en/news-sochi-2014-reveals-its-slogan)
Imagine Mt Kosciusko, Australia, has been given the right to host
the 2022 Winter Olympics. Devise a motto for the Games that reflect
the character and personality of Winter Games in Australia.
Example of past mottos:Vancouver 2010 was the line from the Canadian Anthem "With glowing hearts".
The slogan of Turin 2006, "Passion lives here" reflected the link between the Olympic
spirit and the passionate character of the Italians.
THE LEOPARD
Living high in the branches of trees in the Caucasus
Mountains, the leopard is a good mountain climber who
likes to rescue those needing help. He is also very good at
snowboarding.

TASK 14
TIME YOUR RUN
SPEEDY SKATES
In the final of the two run bobsleigh competition, Sweden, Russia, Italy
and South Korea posted the following times. Using the clues, figure out
each team’s time for each run, then calculate their combined run time to
determine the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.
The times on the 1st run were:
1 minute and 19.22 seconds
1 minute and 18.44 seconds
1 minute and 18.30 seconds
1 minute and 18.67 seconds
The times on the 2nd run were:
1 minute and 19.06 seconds
1 minute and 18.98 seconds
1 minute and 19.58 seconds
1 minute and 19.64 seconds
CLUES
1. On the second run the team from Sweden was ninety-one
hundredths of a second slower than their first run.
2. The team that finished the first run in one minute and 18.30
seconds was not the team that finished the second run in either
one minute and 19.64 seconds or one minute and 18.98 seconds.
3. On the first run, the team from South Korea was ninety- two
hundredths of a second behind the winners of the first run.
4. The team from Italy finished the second race in less than one
minute and 19 seconds.
5. The team from Russia finished the first race in less than one
minute and 18.69 seconds.
6. The bobsleigh team from South Korea clocked a combined time
of two minutes and 38.86 seconds.
The Short Track Skating track at
the Olympics is a 111metre
course. Pierre Boda is skating in
the 500 metre event. How many
times will he have to skate around
the rink to complete the event?
It takes the Czech Republic ice hockey team 11
minutes to drive from the athletes’ village to the
Ice Hockey Stadium. It takes them 25 minutes to
change into their uniforms and 45 minutes to
warm up. The game begins at 3:45pm. What is
the latest time the team can leave the village to
be ready to play when the game starts?
The seating capacity at the Adler Speed Skating Arena
is 8000. On the first day of events, 7600 of the seats
were filled. What percentage of the total number of
