The Importance of Providing Proper Paperwork
Shipments without proper paperwork (BOL and Invoice) can be
delayed at gateways and/or sent to a sufferance warehouse until issue
is resolved; causing additional transit time delays and costly additions
to the invoice. To minimize delays, it is very important to place broker
information on the BOL or Invoice.

Canadian shipments are very important to R + L Carriers. At the time of pickup,
identify the Canadian shipment and ensure proper paperwork is received from the
shipper. Canadian shipments can easily be identified by viewing the consignee
address. Canada is divided into 10 provinces and 3 territories, similar to the U.S.
being divided into states, both using 2 alpha characters for state codes. Below is
a chart listing the provinces and territories and their corresponding abbreviations.

The Process
To ensure shipment clears Canada Customs in a timely manner, it is essential that all
necessary documents are properly completed. Inaccurate or incomplete information
may result in delays.
Required Shipping Documentation*
1. Driver picks up Canadian shipment and verifies that customer
has provided required, BOL & Invoice.
• EnsureCustomsBrokerisidentifiedonBOLorInvoice.
•IfbrokerisnotidentifiedonBOLorInvoice,askshipperto
provide the broker name, as this will prevent unnecessary delays.
2. If Invoice is not supplied, driver must ask shipper for the documents.
• Ifcustomerstatestheydon’thavetheinvoice,driverneedstowrite
“No Invoice” on BOL at the time of pickup.
•Ifcustomerstatespaperworkisonfreight,drivershouldeitherask
for a copy, or pull from shipment and scan.

