ADVENT BIBLE STUDY
STARTING THIS WEDNESDAY
The Origins of the Christmas Story: A look at
the Birth of the Savior as told by Matthew,
Luke and John. Presented by Father Scott in
the Rectory on Wednesdays, 6:30 - 7:45pm.

December 10, Reconciling the differences
and the silence of Mark; and December 17,

UNA BROMA PARA UN CURA
There were four “important” people on an
excursion to fly over beautiful terrain in
Australia, along with a little girl who had
won the trip in an essay contest, when engine
trouble developed and it became certain that
the plane would crash. Unfortunately, there
were five passengers but only four knapsacks
with parachutes. The first passenger said, “I
am a top cancer research specialist and the
world needs me.” He grabbed a knapsack
and jumped. The second passenger said, “I
have a large family and my wife and children
need me.” He grabbed a knapsack and
jumped. The third man said, “I am highly
educated and the smartest man in the country.
Australia needs me.” He grabbed a knapsack
and jumped. The fourth passenger said to the
little girl, “I am an old man and have lived a
full life. You take the last knapsack. I will
go down with the plane.” The little girl
answered, “That’s not necessary, sir. There
are two parachutes left. The smartest man in
Australia just jumped with my school bag.”

THANKSGIVING DONATIONS
The food cupboard will be helping families
to celebrate a bountiful Thanksgiving again
this year. We invite donations of canned
yams and vegetables, stuffing mix, turkey
gravy and other non perishable food items as
well as grocery store gift cards or money
specified to be spent on turkeys and other
perishable items for the American feast day.
Volunteers also are needed. Thank you for
whatever you are able to do!

A CATECHISM FOR THE DYING
CATECISMO PARA LOS MORIBUNDOS
Does the Church still celebrate the “Last
Rites?” Yes!
¿La Iglesia todavía celebra los últimos ritos o
últimos sacramentos? ¡Sí!
But weren’t they done away with after the
Second Vatican Council? No!
¿No fueron suprimidos después del Concilio
Vaticano Segundo? ¡No!
Today we don’t talk about Extreme Unction.
Correct! Extreme Unction referred to the final
Anointing of the Sick which a dying person
received. It was called “extreme” because it
derived from the Latin “extremis,” meaning
“last.” Today, we encourage those who are
seriously ill to receive the Anointing of the Sick
as soon as possible, even if there is no danger of
death.
Pero hoy no hablamos de la extremaunción.
¡Eso es correcto! Extremaunción se refería a la
última Unción sacramental que recibío un
moribundo. Se llamaba "extrema-" ya que
deriva del latín "extremis", que significa

So, what are the Last Rites? Ideally, they
consist in sacramental Confession, an Apostolic
Pardon, a reaffirmation of the Profession of
Faith (Apostles Creed), the Anointing of the
Sick, and Holy Viaticum. Only a priest or
bishop can absolve and celebrate the Anointing
of the Sick. A deacon or lay minister can give
Viaticum and the sick person can pray to receive
the Apostolic Pardon in the absence of a priest
or bishop.
Entonces, ¿qué son los últimos sacramentos? Lo
ideal es que un moribundo haga una Confesión
sacramental, reciba una indulgencia plenaria en
artículo de muerte, haga una profesión del
Credo bautismal, reciba la Unción de los

What do you mean by “ideally?” Often an
individual at the end of life is not able to talk. In
this case, the priest absolves the dying person
and gives him/her the Apostolic Pardon and
Anointing of the Sick if it can be reasonably
presumed that he/she would, in faith, have asked
to receive the Last Rites.
¿Qué quiere decir “lo ideal?" A menudo, una
persona gravement enferma no puede hablar.

What is the Apostolic Pardon? Sometimes
called the “Apostolic Blessing” it is a plenary
indulgence given in situations of danger of
death, for the remission of temporal punishment
due to sin.
What is Holy Viaticum?
The final Holy
Communion, it is the most sacred of the three
sacraments for the dying, since it is food for the
journey to heaven, the very Body of our Savior.
¿Qué es la indulgencia plenaria en artículo de
muerte? Está dada en situaciones de peligro
mortal para perdonar toda pena temporal por los
pecados. Mientras que la absolución del
sacerdote absuelva de toda culpa, la pena
