The Martin Luther King, Jr.
Community Service Award
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award recognizes and encourages excellence
in community service activities, carried out by an individual, organization or group. The
hope is to stimulate similar efforts by others who may want to serve in the community.
The awardee will be highly recognized at the 29th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday
Celebration. The event will be recorded and televised to showcase the significant
accomplishments of the award winner.

The City Events and Recognitions Committee seeks nominations for outstanding individuals
and/or groups meeting the following criteria:
 The nominee(s) must be a Tacoma-Pierce County resident;
 Community service activity must have occurred during the previous 12 months OR the
individual/group must have demonstrated a commitment to significant community
service over a lifetime;
 Service has a positive effect on a given community or population;
 Individual or group shows thoroughness of program/project planning and
implementation;
 Has a proven track record of community service within the community and/or
throughout Pierce County;
 Embraces community service as an ongoing commitment;
 Has outstanding skills which are generously given;
 Demonstrates leadership and inspires others; and
 Serves as a role model for the next generation of community service participants.

Nominations for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award must be received by
the City’s Community & Economic Development Department no later than 5 p.m. on
Monday November 7, 2016 in order to be considered by the committee.
The City Events and Recognitions Committee is particularly interested in receiving
nominations highlighting youth, or individuals, organizations or groups serving youth. The
award winner will be selected by the City Events and Recognitions Committee at their
November meeting.
