Figure 1: INFLATION TREND, JANUARY TO DECEMBER 2015 INFLATION TREND JANUARY TO DECEMBER 2015 4 3.5 Percent 3 2.5 2 1.5 1 0.5 0 January March July May September November Period National Cities STATISTICS BOTSWANA Urban Villages 8 Rural Villages The national Cost-of-Living index increased from 179.5 to 183.6 between January and December 2015 showing an increase of 2.3 percent between the periods. This compares with an increase of 2.9 percent from 173.1 to 178.1 during the same period of the previous year. The cities/towns, urban villages and rural indices rose from 177.9 to 182.3, 178.5 to 182.0 and 183.3 to 189.9, respectively between January and December 2015. Average inflation rate for Transport group decreased by 6.3 of a percentage point from 1.2 percent in 2014 to -5.1 percent in 2015. Clothing had the highest inflation rate in 2015 at 7.6%. Figure 2: COST OF LIVING INDEX IN 2015 9 STATISTICS BOTSWANA Figure 3: COMPARISON OF AVERAGE INFLATION RATE FOR VARIOUS COMMODITIES IN 2014 AND 2015 STATISTICS BOTSWANA 10 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) GDP at nominal prices for 2015 is estimated at P145, 714.6 million, compared with a revised estimate of P142, 466.1 million in 2014, which is a 2.3 percent increase (Table 4) At current prices, GDP per capita increased from a revised estimate of P66, 534.3 in 2014 to P66, 795.5 in 2015, which is an increase of 0.4 percent. At constant 2006 prices, GDP was estimated at P85, 401.1 million in 2015, a decrease of 0.3 percent from the previous year (Table 7).GDP per capita decreased from P39,985.8 in 2014 to P39 148.1in 2015, showing decrease of 2.1 percent in real terms. Figure 4: OVERALL GDP AND GDP PER CAPITA INCOME OVER THE YEARS 11 STATISTICS BOTSWANA GDP by Economic activity: GDP at constant prices was P85 401.1 million in 2015 compared to a revised level of P85 619.4 million in 2014, recording a decrease of -0.3percent. The decrease in real GDP was mainly due to Water and electricity and Mining which recorded a decrease in value added of 89.3 and 19.7 percent respectively. The decline in growth rate of 19.7 percent in the Mining sector is attributed to 15.7 percent decrease in diamond production compared to a high increase of 23.8 percent in the previous year. Contribution to GDP by industry is shown in table 5. Mining remains a major contributor to GDP, its contribution went down to 18.3 percent in 2015 compared to 24.0 percent in 2014. Figure 5: ECONOMIC GROWTH BY ECONOMIC ACTIVITY STATISTICS BOTSWANA 12 Transport Air Transport In 2015, four out of six airports experienced a decline in aircraft movements. Gaborone had an increase in aircraft movements while Gantsi airport received the same number of aircraft movents as was in 2014. Maun airport accounted for 56.7 percent of total aicraft movements. Aircraft movements in Maun airport delined by 15.1 percent when compared to aircraft movements recorded in 2014. Gaborone airport recorded an increase of 6.1 percent in aircraft movements when compared to the previous year, 2014. It contributed 23.6 percent of total aircraft movements for 2015. Ghanzi and Selibe Phikwe accounted for 0.3 and 0.4 percent of total aircraft movements respectively. See Figure 6 below. Figure 6: AIRCRAFT MOVEMENT IN PERCENTAGE BY AIRPORT, 2015 13 STATISTICS BOTSWANA The year 2015 recorded 720,906 air passenger movements, this was a decline of 4.6 percent when compared to the 755,721 movements recorded in 2014. Both International and domestic movements recorded a decline and for both types of movements, arrivals and departures declined. Since 2006, International movements have increased from one year to the other but only to decline in 2012. The movements increased again in 2013 and only to decline again in 2015, this was a decline of 0.2 percent when compared to 2014. This was the same for domestic movements but the decline was in 2010 and the movements kept declining till 2012. In 2015, domestic movements declined by 10.0 percent when compared to 2014. The bulk of the vehicles transported were going out of the country (63.5 percent), while the rest were coming in (36.5 percent). See Table 6.3. 19 STATISTICS BOTSWANA Mineral Production Statistics The contraction in mining production was mainly due to weak demand for most minerals as it is indicative from the graph that only Copper-Nickel-Cobalt Matte and Coal recorded positive growth. The weak demand for minerals in the year 2015 saw the temporary closure of copper in concentrates and silver producing mines that’s is, Discovery Metal Limited and Messina Copper Botswana, which closed at the end of first quarter of 2015 and the end of third quarter of 2015 respectively. Weak demand for diamonds also resulted in Damtshaa Diamond mine’s temporary closure which further constrained production. The mine is currently under care and maintenance. Figure 10: PERCENTAGE CHANGE IN THE VOLUME OF MINING PRODUCTION BY MINERAL, 2014-2015 STATISTICS BOTSWANA 20 Electricity Generation Statistics Table 3 and figure 2 below present the electricity generation statistics in Botswana for the period 2015, compared with the preceding year. It can be observed that electricity generation experienced an increase from January to April and fluctuated thereafter. The months of May, June, July, August, September and November registered a negative growth in electricity generation i.e. 18.0 percent, 29.2 percent, 40.2 percent, 13.5 percent and 12.6 percent respectively. These decreases were attributed to the operational challenges realized at Morupule B power station.
