environment. Statistics contained in the Year Book are the most recent available at the time of
preparation.
The report is divided into two parts, with the first part presenting discussions on the economic and
social indicators during 2014/15 while the second part presents tables on which these discussions
are based.
I am very grateful to all contributing organizations and departments for their excellent contributions.
Statistics Botswana rely on information provided freely by businesses, governments Departments
and other organizations. Their continued co-operation is very much appreciated.
My thanks also go to the Statistics Botswana staff who contributed to the preparation and

decreased by 6.3 of a percentage point from 1.2 percent in 2014 to -5.1 percent in 2015. Clothing
had the highest inflation rate in 2015 at 7.6%.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
GDP at nominal prices for 2015 is estimated at P145, 714.6 million, compared with a
revised estimate of P142, 466.1 million in 2014, which is a 2.3 percent increase (Table 4) At
current prices, GDP per capita increased from a revised estimate of P66, 534.3 in 2014 to
P66, 795.5 in 2015, which is an increase of 0.4 percent. At constant 2006 prices, GDP was
estimated at P85, 401.1 million in 2015, a decrease of 0.3 percent from the previous year
(Table 7).GDP per capita decreased from P39,985.8 in 2014 to P39 148.1in 2015, showing
decrease of 2.1 percent in real terms.

STATISTICS BOTSWANA
GDP by Economic activity:
GDP at constant prices was P85 401.1 million in 2015 compared to a revised level of
P85 619.4 million in 2014, recording a decrease of -0.3percent. The decrease in real
GDP was mainly due to Water and electricity and Mining which recorded a decrease
in value added of 89.3 and 19.7 percent respectively. The decline in growth rate of
19.7 percent in the Mining sector is attributed to 15.7 percent decrease in diamond
production compared to a high increase of 23.8 percent in the previous year.
Contribution to GDP by industry is shown in table 5. Mining remains a major contributor
to GDP, its contribution went down to 18.3 percent in 2015 compared to 24.0 percent
in 2014.

net tonnes in 2014 to 842,574 net tonnes. The increase resulted from the increase
realized in imports from South (10.1 percent). Total Exports went up from 2006 to 2008.
Total Exports went down in 2009. From 2010 to 2015, total exports increased. The

STATISTICS BOTSWANA
Mineral Production Statistics
The contraction in mining production was mainly due to weak demand for most
minerals as it is indicative from the graph that only Copper-Nickel-Cobalt Matte and
Coal recorded positive growth. The weak demand for minerals in the year 2015 saw
the temporary closure of copper in concentrates and silver producing mines that’s is,
Discovery Metal Limited and Messina Copper Botswana, which closed at the end of
first quarter of 2015 and the end of third quarter of 2015 respectively. Weak demand for
diamonds also resulted in Damtshaa Diamond mine’s temporary closure which further
constrained production. The mine is currently under care and maintenance.

Electricity Generation Statistics
Table 3 and figure 2 below present the electricity generation statistics in Botswana for
the period 2015, compared with the preceding year. It can be observed that electricity
generation experienced an increase from January to April and fluctuated thereafter.
The months of May, June, July, August, September and November registered a
negative growth in electricity generation i.e. 18.0 percent, 29.2 percent, 40.2 percent,
13.5 percent and 12.6 percent respectively. These decreases were attributed to the
operational challenges realized at Morupule B power station.

Tourism
The country received a total of 2,501,616 arrivals. This is a 20.1 percentage increase
from the 2014 figures. It is the first peak after figures have been declining since 2010.
This increase is mainly attributed to an increase in the number of arrivals from the
African continent.

STATISTICS BOTSWANA
Figure 1 shows that government schools constituted more than 82.00 percent of all schools for the past
10 years. The percentage of government schools increased from 82,7 percent in 2003 to 87.2 percent
in 2007 and thereafter reduced to 82.5 percent in 2013 due to increase in private schools. On the other
hand the percentage of private schools fluctuated between 11.3 and 16.1 percent. The percentage
of government aided schools remained around 1.5 percent mainly because the number of schools
has remained constant over the years. The graph indicates that government is the main provider of
secondary education.
Figure 21: PRIMARY SCHOOL DROP OUT RATES BY SEX – 2008-2013
Figure 3 shows that primary school dropout rate reduced from 1.1 percent in 2008 to 0.6 in 2013.
The rate for boys reduced from 1.4 percent in 2008 to 0.7 percent in 2013 while the rate for girls
reduced from 0.8 percent to 0.4 percent during the same period. Furthermore the analysis shows
that primary school boys dropped from school at a higher rate than girls across the years.
