2016 Caucus Information WHAT IS CAUCUS? Caucuses are fundamentally neighborhood meetings. You gather at the location designated for your precinct with other members of your party, vote for your preferred candidate and elect delegates to your county Convention and Assembly. Caucuses are also where Precinct Committee People are elected. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN CAUCUS? In order to vote at caucus, you must be: - A resident of your precinct for at least 30 days. - Registered to vote no later than 29 days before the caucus. - Affiliated with the party holding the caucus for at least 2 months before the caucus. - Anyone who turns 18 or becomes a naturalized U.S. Citizen and registered to vote during the two months prior to March 1, 2016 is eligible to vote. IMPORTANT DATES Precinct Caucus: County Convention and Assembly: Congressional District Convention & Assembly: March 1, 2016 at 7:00 pm March 2 - 26, 2016 April 1 - 15, 2016 Information from The Parties Democratic Party WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENS AT CAUCUS? 1 - Show up at your caucus site and sign in at your precinct 2 - The Pledge of Allegiance is followed by the rules read aloud so everyone understands the process Republican Party HOW DO I REGISTER FOR MY PRECINCT CAUCUS: People are not required to register for caucus, although they may pre-register and look up their caucus location at caucus.cologop.org. Preregistration will expedite the check-in process. 3 - Candidates are given an opportunity to speak WHAT HAPPENS AT A PRECINCT CAUCUS? 4 - Each precinct elects a designated number of delegates to your county Assembly and Convention. 1 - Voting members elect a Chair, Secretary, and Teller. Republicans will not be voting on candidates. (Delegates are elected by candidate preference, so each caucus takes a preference poll. Everyone votes for their preferred candidate.) 5 - After you complete the Presidential Preference Poll to allocate and select delegates to your county Convention, you go through the same process to allocate and select delegates to your county Assembly. 6 - The preference poll for your county Assembly will be the highest, contested state-wide race. (Currently that is the Distric Attorney race. Some precincts may decide to elect the same people to be Convention and Assembly delegates.) 7 - Your precinct will also elect two Precinct Committee People and draft and vote on resolutions, which is the first step in drafting the Democratic party platform. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO BE A NATIONAL DELEGATE? Must meet all requirements for precinct caucus, and be elected to attend the State and/or Congressional Conventions as either a delegate or alternate delegate. HOW DO I RUN FOR NATIONAL DELEGATE? Complete the National Delegate Intent to Run Form. The Intent to Run form must be submitted 13 days prior to the assembly at which one intends to run for national delegate. (in other words, 13 days prior to CD1 or 13 days prior to State).
