Flowers and trees are blooming. The grass is turning green. Golf courses are full and the weather has been beautiful. Days are longer giving us the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. I hope that we all take this opportunity to “smell the roses” and enjoy the season. I believe that this is the most beautiful time of year in our community. The Master Association has been busy preparing for the upcoming season. The pools at the Pink Palace and MAC are scheduled to officially open on April 1st. Volunteers have been cleaning and repairing outdoor furniture and decking. They have also been repairing moisture and mold damage in the hot tub at the Creek Side building. As mentioned in last month’s Sea Trailer, we plan to open this as an outdoor spa for the coming season. It is hoped that removing the windows will alleviate the moisture problems that have occurred in the past. A decision about the future of the hot tub will be made at the end of the pool season. The pool and hot tub at the MAC will be fully operational thanks to the efforts of the Pools Committee. If you have not yet seen the improvements made to our buildings, do so at your first opportunity. The MAC, Chapel, and Pink Palace have all been painted and all reflect positively on our active, vibrant community. In addition, new tables have been purchased for the Pink Palace and new user friendly media equipment and sound system are operational. Thanks are in order to the Facilities Committee for planning and implementing these enhancements to our amenities. In addition, representatives of the Master Association have been working with Sunset Beach town officials to complete the dedication of roads owned by the Association to the Town. Completion of this long running project will relieve us of the expense and liability associated with these roads. We have also had discussions with the police department regarding establishment of enforceable speed limits within Sea Trail and installation of appropriate signs. Continued on next page 2 THE SEA TRAILER | APRIL 2017 President’s Message continued Finally, the new website is coming! I have been assured that it will be available to all of us by April 15th. I apologize for the delay and thank you all for your patience. I have seen the product and believe it will be worth the wait when we all become familiar with its features. As previously announced, training will be available to those who need it. We are also anticipating the continuation of a smaller version of the Sea Trailer. More information will be forthcoming as it becomes available. Enjoy the spring weather! Mike Campbell Pool/Tennis Committee The official pool season begins on April 1st. The pool decks have been power washed; the furniture will be cleaned and set out on March 28-29. Pool hours are 6 am to 9 pm; monitors start on May 26th, Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Until then, we as home owners are all Pool Monitors. We need to be observant to make sure that the Pool Rules are observed. Both spas, indoor and outdoor, will be in service on April 1st. We are in the process of getting an estimate for the cleaning of the tennis courts. Looking forward to an enjoyable summer season. Ray Coakley, Committee Chair ABCPOA Brunswick County Planning and Zoning Committee noted there are plans to build a 144 unit community in Shallotte. They also indicated that abandoned boats will be monitored but no definitive decisions on abandoned equipment, vehicles, or residences. Brunswick County Legislative Committee will require property owners associations to provide annual audits. A vendor database is being prepared in an attempt to combine with other communities in the ABCPOA to possible obtain better rates. The County Fire and Safety committee indicated that fire fees for all residents will be enforced. ABCPOA Representatives Thomas Robbins and Allen Doolittle SAVE THE DATE Once again it's that time of year - baseball and hotdogs. For the 8th year in a row, the Sea Trail Songbirds have been asked to sing the Star Spangled Banner at a Pelicans baseball game. Please join the Songbirds as well as your neighbors for a fun evening on Wednesday, May 24 at 7:00 pm. (Weiner Wednesday - Buy 1 Get 1 Free). The tickets will be $9 each. Any questions, call Linda at 575-7990. 3 April Landscaping Tips VACANT LOT OWNERS - it is your responsibility to mow/bush hog the lot in May and September each year, per town ordinance, as well as improving the appearance of our community. If you wish to sign up for the lot mowing being coordinated by the STMA – please call Debra Bordeaux at 910-579-5374 to arrange for this service. Additionally, it is the owner's responsibility to remove all downed limbs and branches, dead trees and plants, and any vines and small woody growth that restricts the lot mowing and/or detracts from the lot appearance per Sunset Beach ordinance 93.01. For your convenience, the Town of Sunset Beach picks up yard waste that is properly bundled and/or bagged twice monthly. If you need advice on lot clean up services please contact Jim Stokes (770-940-3639) as this needs to be completed prior to the start of mowing in May. Thank you in advance for helping improve the appearance of our community. HOMEOWNERS YARD CARE--April is the month to apply fertilizers to many of our Zone 8b plants. After azaleas bloom, a light application of Hollytone, an acidic fertilizer, can be applied. Other acid-loving plants like gardenias, hollies, camellias, ferns like Hollytone, as well. An all-purpose fertilizer, like 10-10-10, can be applied to other shrubs and trees. Always read label directions; do not over fertilize since fertilizers are salts that can cause water to be leached from roots; water in fertilizers after application; apply fertilizers at the dripline of plants, pulling back any mulch. Keep all mulches away from the base/trunk of the plant. Stone does not provide any nutrition to the plant and can hold in too much heat in the summer. It is also difficult to change one's mind about replanting in that area! Water is necessary for plants to thrive. It takes three years for some trees to get established; one to two years for shrubs. Plants need, on average, one inch of water a week, more if a newly-planted one. Do not depend on drip irrigation to do the job, use a garden hose! Soil tests: If your lawns, etc. are not thriving, a soil test may be your answer. It is easy to accomplish; the soil is sent to Raleigh where it is analyzed; a computer report will be sent with recommendations on what chemicals to apply to help your particular situation. Call the N.C. Agricultural Extension Agency (910-253-2610) in Bolivia for assistance. Perhaps those few days of colder temperatures and a brief show of frozen precipitation in the air was God's way of making us have a greater appreciation for the sunshine, warmth and beauty of April and the coming months. God sometimes does the same thing in our personal lives. When we encounter obstacles and inclement weather we have God's assurance that brighter skies and sunshine is on the horizon. We just need to pray and trust Him. Do you have a prayer request??? To the right are the names and areas of some of the members.
