LOOK AROUND YOU
To see the world in a grain of sand

hold infinity in the palm of your hand
and eternity in an hour.

The Word in Our Lives:
Readings for July 31, 2016
18th Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:21-23
Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth,
vanity of vanities! All things are vanity!
Here is one who has labored with wisdom and knowledge and skill, and yet to another who has not labored over it, he
must leave property. This also is vanity and a great misfortune. For what profit comes to man from all the toil and
anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun? All his days sorrow and grief are his occupation; even at
night his mind is not at rest. This also is vanity.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 90:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14, 17
Second Reading: Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11
Brothers and sisters:
If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is
above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ your life
appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.
Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is
idolatry. Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self,
which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its creator.
Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all and
in all.
Gospel: Luke 12:13-21
Someone in the crowd said to Jesus,
“Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as
your judge and arbitrator?” Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one
may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”
Then he told them a parable.
“There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do
not have space to store my harvest?’ And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and
build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you,
you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’ But God said to him,
‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they
belong?’ Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.”
La Palabra en Nuestra Vidas:
31 De Julio De 2016
XVIII Domingo Ordinario
Segunda Lectura: Colosenses 3, 1-5. 9-11
Stewardship
As this year’s annual parish carnival wraps up, I hope
that everyone got the opportunity to attend at least one
evening and take in the fun! I also want to again
reiterate the gratitude to all parishioners who donated
their time, talent, and treasures to make the event so
perfect. I always marvel at how especially wonderful
it is that so many people contribute in ways that many
of us would never know as the efforts are humbly put
forth in quiet and gracious fashion. This includes
people staying up late after a long day’s work to bake a
cake for donation, or getting up exceptionally early to
take down tents. While I’m sure some specific
stewardship acts go unnoticed, ALL are clearly felt
when the “dust settles” and one “takes in” how great
the “sum of the parts really are!”
The offertory collection for the last week’s collection
was $13,740 toward our weekly offertory goal of
$16,300. This brings our year-to-date total to $46,247
received toward our year-to-date goal of $48,900.
Thank you for accepting the responsibility of faithful
stewardship.
John Sanders, President, Finance Council
Now that summer is here and vacations
are upon us, we thank you for always
remembering St. Joseph Parish’s needs
even when you are away. Many people
find that electronic giving helps greatly in this regard.
Please contact Dick McAloon at 302-378-5800 for
more information about our ACH program.
PAT’S PIZZA
Pat’s Pizza Family Restaurant, located at 311 N. Broad
Street in Middletown, will donate a portion of all
receipts we return to them. Please place your saved
receipts in the collection basket or drop them off at the
parish office. We are blessed that our local businesses
continue to support our parish. Please thank them for
their generosity when you visit Pat’s.
REDNER’S RECEIPTS
The CCEA does collect Redner’s receipts. Receipts
can be put in the collection basket or dropped off at the
office.
Thank you for your generosity, it is
appreciated.
Chuck Montgomery Ins Agency Inc.

for advertising in our parish bulletin.
Please be sure to visit our parish website and check out
sponsors of our golf outing and those businesses who
advertise in our bulletin. Your support of these
sponsors is one way to say thank you for their
generosity.

VOCATIONS REFLECTION
In today’s gospel, Jesus teaches his disciples to pray to
the Father with the words “Thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven.” Learning to listen for God’s will is
one of the most important things any of us can do in
our lives here on earth. What is God’s will for you?
How is He calling you to spend your life? If you think
it might be in a religious vocation, please contact
Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly
and
Religious
Vocations
(302-573-3113,
[email protected]). Be sure to visit our website:
www.cdow.org/vocations!
PARENTING POINTERS
The 4th Sunday in July is Parents Day. Go beyond the
"Hallmark Holiday" notion. Perhaps use it as a time to
tell your child what it was like for you to await their
birth. How did you prepare?
MARRIAGE MOMENTS
Do you ever bargain with your beloved? "If you watch
the kids, I'll be able to do this repair project." OR "If
only you could give me 5 more minutes, 1 hour, 1 day
to finish this, we could spend some quality time
together. It's not bad to negotiate, but keep your end of
the bargain. (Gn. 18: 20-32)
POWER OF PRAYER
Prayer is powerful…...do you have someone or
something for which you would like prayers? You may
phone the Parish Office or email your prayer requests
to Kathy Dolde at [email protected] and they will
pass them on to members of our Prayer Chain.
Parishioners are also welcome to join our prayer group.
All it involves is getting an email and praying for the
person or petition. If you are interested, please contact
Kathy.
Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
ROSARY AT BROADMEADOW
The Rosary is prayed each Wednesday at 11:00 AM at
Broadmeadow Nursing Home. Any parishioner is
welcome to attend and participate. We are also in need
of people to lead the rosary. If you are able to help
please call Helen Gaden at 302-376-0711.
BEREAVEMENT FACILITATORS NEEDED
We are in need of more facilitators to join our
Seasons of Hope team to facilitate our weekly
sessions beginning September, 2016. No Experience
is necessary. If you have a compassionate heart,
willing to listen and can make the commitment, we
want to hear from you. Bereavement is a rewarding
ministry and a great act of mercy towards those who
are mourning. For information, please contact Father
Timothy Brady or Dee Headley at 302-378-5800.

annually and submitted for each student at the time of

SUMMER PREP
We ask all visitors to our parish complex to use
caution when driving into and out of the parking lots.
Our Parish Religious Education Program has begun
its last summer session and we will have large
numbers of youth on our property during the day.
Parents will be dropping off and picking up at the
rear of the Parish Complex. Please keep a watchful
eye out for them!
We are blessed with many, many catechists who are
willing to share their faith with our children. As our
program grows, we are always in need of volunteers
and gratefully welcome any parent that is willing to
share their time and talent. Please contact Mary Kirk in
the Religious Education office, 302.378.5800, ext. 107
or via email at [email protected] if you
are interested in learning more about this ministry.
In the Gospel this week Jesus
teaches us to pray the Our Father.
He reminds us to ask so we will
receive and seek so that we will
find. Bring It Home this week by
being persistent in prayer. Gather
as a family and pray the Our
Father together each night asking
for a specific intention.
BAPTISM PREPARATION
It is always an exciting time when a family is
anticipating the birth of a child, not only for the family
but for our parish community as well. There are so
many things to think about and prepare for during the
months prior to the arrival of your child. One of those
things might be the Baptism.
Parents are required to attend a two-part Baptism PREP
program. We have found that it is easier for the parents
if they do this during the second trimester of the
pregnancy. We offer our Baptism PREP classes every
other month, the next classes will be in August.
Classes will be held on the first and third Saturdays at
10:30 AM.
Registration in the parish is required prior to scheduling
Baptism PREP. It is necessary to call the parish
office, 302-378-5800, to register for the classes. You
will be given the schedule of classes when you call.
Please note that Baptism dates will not be confirmed
until classes are completed and all information for your
sponsors has been received by the parish office.
Godparents and/or Sponsors for Confirmation must
meet the requirements of Canon Law. The person
who will fulfill one of these important roles must:
· Be at least sixteen years of age;
· Have celebrated all three Sacraments of Initiation
(Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist);
· Be living a life in harmony with the teaching of the
Church
It is the third requirement that most often causes
difficulty. It is generally interpreted to mean that a
person is registered in a parish and, if married is in a
valid marriage. This means that the marriage must
have taken place in the Catholic Church or, if
celebrated in the church of another denomination the
couple must have received permission of the Catholic
Church for this to take place. This generally occurs
when in the celebration of marriage between a
Catholic and a non-Catholic Christian the church of
the non-Catholic holds particular significance for the
non-Catholic party. In such a case the bishop is asked
to grant a dispensation so that the wedding may be
considered valid by the Catholic Church.
For those who were not married in the Catholic
Church and are free to do so (meaning no prior
marriages requiring an annulment) they may ask to
have a “convalidation” of their marriage. This is
generally referred to by most as “having their
marriage blessed.”
It is worth noting that divorce in and of itself does
not make one ineligible to serve as a godparent or
sponsor (nor does it exclude one from receiving the
Eucharist). The difficulty arises when there is a
subsequent marriage without seeking an annulment
of one’s previous bond of marriage.
KEEP PRAYING
St. Monica, whose feast we celebrate in August, is
often known as "the persistent mother." She watched
her oldest son, Augustine, turn his back on his
Christian faith.
Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up talking
directly to her son on the advice of a local bishop, who
told her that it was better to talk to God about
Augustine then to Augustine about God.
The mother never gave up praying for her son.
Eventually Augustine gave up his wild ways, was
baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of
Hippo. St. Augustine went on to become one of the
Church's greatest scholars.
Today's readings address the importance of persistent
prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation that he is
bothering the Lord, continues to ask about the fate of
Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in Luke's Gospel, tells
his disciples to "ask and you will receive; seek and you
will find; knock and the door will be opened to
you" (Luke 11:9). This is our charge: keep praying.

SIGUE REZANDO
rezando.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION
The AFF Committee needs your help and your input to
accomplish our Mission. Join the people of God here
at St. Joseph Church and St. Rose Church in bringing
the gift that is Jesus Christ to the Adult Faith
Community here in themes that are practical and
relevant to all of us. As adults, most of us have no
formal faith formation after high school and adult faith
formation is at least as important as learning about our
profession/job or our role as a parent, or a spouse. If
you are interested in joining us or learning more about
what we do and who we are please contact: Fr. Kelley
or Mary Kirk at 302-378-5800 or John Ruane at 302378-2217.
WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY
Wednesday morning Bible study will be suspended
until August 10th due to PREP classes in the Parish
complex. On August 10th, please join us at 9:30 AM in
the parish center when we break open the Scriptures for
the coming Sunday. We encourage people to share how
the readings touch their lives or to sit quietly and listen
as others reflect on them. The conversation is easy and
informative. Come when and as often as you’d like. If
you have questions please call 302-378-5800.
CHARISMATIC PRAYER MEETINGS
Come and see what a Charismatic prayer meeting is all
about. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, at
7:00PM, in the parish complex. There is usually a brief
teaching on one of the charismatic gifts or aspect of
faith, followed by singing and praising the Lord. If
you have any questions, call Linda Wills @ 302-4491498 or Cookie Ruane @ 302-378-2217.
