The Next New Thing by Jim Vander Kamp
It seems like we are always hearing about something that is getting ready to burst on the
scene. It could be in technology, entertainment, transportation or virtually anything under
the sun. At Roundup, we haven’t “popped” anything new in quite a while. Sometimes we
get so caught up in the services we are providing that we don’t spend enough time
examining where else we might want to go. Well, that is about to change!
Since March, we have had a number of staff doing some investigation into what other
services we should consider providing. There are many options, some more promising
than others, and some more involved than others. Since we serve both children and adults, we had an open avenue
to look at services for both or to look at something completely different. We now have a direction!
In Denver, we serve both children and adults in a number of different settings but are only serving children in
Colorado Springs (CS). We are pleased to announce that is changing in September. After discussions with the local
Community Centered Board in CS, we noted that they were very interested in someone else coming in to offer a
variety of services to people who often have no alternative but to either sit at home - continued on page 3
Do You Suppose We’ll Ever Have Any More
Magical Adventures? by Benjamin, a resident of one of our homes.
Yes, I did. A year later, I found a magic charm. It had a limit of 10 wishes, unlike the
magic charm Jane, Mark, Katharine, and Martha had found. The first wish I made
was, “I wish my hair would grow down to my ankles”. And, it did! My next wish was
that the Dailu record would deliver papers by day everyday of the week except on
holidays and Sundays, it came true. My third, fourth and fifth wishes were to go on
an overnight pass with my mom, that my mom would get get paid 100 times the money that she earns at her job,
and that my sister would visit me at Fortune House once if not twice a month. And, these wishes came true too!!!
My sixth, seventh and eighth wishes were to be a famous singer and rapper, to be Rick and to be the first
quadrillionaire in existence. Eight, to be more religious than I was, and to put all my old self behind me forever. After
being good for a month I’d return home to my family and live there the rest of my life on earth. After being home with
my family for a month, I made a ninth wish for everyone on earth from my time on would follow God, Jesus and the
Holy Spirit from the time they are born ‘til the time they die. My happiness was almost complete, so I wished that
everyone after me would become immortal forever even after God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit would take us to the
Heaven. So my happiness was complete. THE END.
The mission of Roundup Fellowship is to serve people with developmental disabilities,
recognizing their worth, affirming their ability to contribute, and striving to promote dignity in all relationships.

We are currently serving adults in Denver by helping
some people find paid employment and others the
chance to get out into the community each day by
volunteering, participating in cultural or recreational
activities, and having regular organized social contact. It
is a given that people who have intellectual and
developmental disabilities need greater structure and
assistance when it comes to choosing activities or
employment.
Our goal is to get started as early as September. We have
space available in our school building and we believe that
there is great opportunity for growth in this area.
So the next new thing is actually something that we know
quite well. We are very excited to start serving adults in
CS. We will be sharing more very soon as we get this new
service up and running. Please pray that glitches will be
minimal so that we can offer support and help to people in
the near future.

Staff Spotlight: Lauren M. Schoepp
I began working with clients with many different disabilities. In 2009, I started
working with clients who have developmental disabilities. I worked as an
Emergency Medical Technician prior to moving to Colorado and was searching for a place to use those medical skills. I started a job as a respite provider
for children and adults with special needs and really became passionate about
serving this population. My experience at Roundup Fortune House has been
very positive. The clients and my fellow awesome Direct Care Counselors had
a lot to teach me, particularly regarding working with children who may be in
DHS placement and working with children who had experienced trauma.
In addition to my background in emergency medicine, I also have a child who is deaf and has physical and
developmental disabilities. I attend many classes and seminars to learn everything I can about Individual Education
Plans, intervention strategies, and the provisions and accommodations afforded by the Americans with Disabilities Act
to help my son and other families who need to advocate for someone with special needs. I managed a large and very
successful playgroup and parent support organization in Colorado Springs that served more than 100 families. When
I felt this environment no longer suited my child, I started an inclusive playgroup that was a space for all children with
disabilities, their siblings and loved ones to feel loved, supported and safe, regardless of abilities and disabilities while
experiencing some of the “normal” things they are often left out of like class parties, birthday parties and play dates. I
have learned American Sign Language to communicate with my son and continue to attend classes and conferences
to improve my ASL competency. I am also the wife of a Wounded Warrior with a Traumatic Brain Injury and I feel my
position as both a spouse and mother of someone with disabilities as well as my existing friendships and professional
relationships in the community allow me to have a unique insight which is beneficial to my work at Fortune House.
Fortune House has been a wonderful place to learn and grow as a professional. The clients are amazing and all have
unique stories and unique needs that the staff strive to meet. My favorite part of my job is working with staff that treat
the clients with dignity and respect, have compassion for our clients and share my passion for providing our clients
with a rich experience during crucial developmental years with many outings and unique community experiences.
