4 Avery Hansen Dissolving Salt

SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT
Dissolving Salt
Avery Hansen| Mrs. McNees| Syracuse Jr. High
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
• What does salt dissolve fastest in?
RESEARCH
• Summarize your research here in three to five significant facts:
– Solubility is the ability of a substance to dissolve in a solution.
– Evaporation is the process of change from a liquid to a gas.
– Condensation is when a gas is cooled to a boiling point and becomes a liquid.
– Sublimation is the slow change of a state from a solid to a gas without
becoming a liquid.

HYPOTHESIS
• Use If I put the salt in hot water and stir it then it will dissolve
quickest because the hotter something is the faster the molecules
move and it changes it state of matter.
• The salt in the hot water while I stir it will dissolve quickest.
PROCEDURE: MATERIALS
• Salt
• Spoon
• 4 glass cups
• Timer
PROCEDURE: STEPS
1. Put salt in 1 of the 4 cups stir or don’t stir depending.
2. Time it.
3. Write down data.
VARIABLES
• Constants: The amount of water.
• Controlled variables: How salt normally dissolves with nothing done
to it.
• Independent (manipulated) variable: Temperature of the water.
• Dependent (measured) variable: How quickly the salt dissolves.
DATA/OBSERVATIONS
• When I didn’t stir the salt in the cold water it looked like the salt was
rising to the top of the cup and then it dissolved. When I stirred in the
hot water it dissolved so quick, the salt was there and then 30
seconds later it had dissolved. The salt dissolved about the same
times when I didn’t stir it in cold or hot. There was a noticeable
difference in stirring the cold and stirring the hot.

CONCLUSION
Type a brief summary here of what you discovered based on the results
of your experiments. You need to:
• 1) The hot water while stirring dissolved quickest.
• 2) My hypothesis was supported.
