Milestones in Man’s Migration
1,000 CE
3 million BCE
Early man has moved into Asia and Africa in search of foods.
Early man first appears in East Africa and survives as a nomadic huntergatherer.
A global Ice Age occurs. The oceans freeze and a land bridge is created between Asia and North America.
Early man builds rafts from hollowed out logs and takes to the seas, migrating to Indonesia and Africa.
1.5 million BCE
4,000 BCE
10,000 BCE
100,000 BCE
Powerful states begin to form. Trade is conducted across the Mediterranean Sea.
The Ice Age ends. Sea levels rise. The land bridge disappears.
Early man crosses the Bering Land Bridge into North America.
30,000 BCE
Man settles in river valleys that have been carved out by glaciers. He begins to farm.
8,000 BCE
500 BCE
Man develops the ability to travel to all continents on the earth using multiple methods of transportation. He is able to travel beyond the earth in spaceships
Powerful states grow into even more powerful empires. Trade is conducted on seas bordering Asia, Africa and 2,000 CE
Europe as well as on land routes.
Discussion Questions:
1. What do you notice about the way the events appear on the timeline?
2. Why do you think change occurs more rapidly after the end of the Ice Age?
3. If Early Humans first appeared in Africa, how and why do you think they would migrate to
the rest of the world?

What have archaeologists discovered about prehistory?
Hominins> a species from the same group of primates as humans, but much older; they are bipedal (walk on two feet)
*One such hominin is nicknamed "Ardi," and she is over 5,000,000 years old
The first hominin to be discovered is nicknamed "Lucy." She is over 3.2 million years old, and he skeleton was found in Ethiopia.
There are many species of hominins, but modern humans are the only species that survives today. In fact, scientists believe that one species of hominins evolved into the Homo Sapiens species that is modern humans.
