The July Mee"ng was hosted by Phillip and Laurel
Anderson on Saturday 11 July 2015. Despite weather predic"ons of ar"c blizzards, the weather turned
on a perfect, sunny winter’s day.
Phillip’s layout room in his backyard was open with
CP trains the order of the day. At the business part
of the mee"ng, Les Fowler advised members that
the planning for the Christmas Party was moving
forward with 3801 Ltd and the Robertson Inn all
lined up. The Christmas Party will be on Sunday 13
December with a train ride to Robertson and return
with a lunch at the Robertson Inn. Les will need firm
numbers by the end of October to finalise the bookings.
Les also reminded everyone to make their conven"on bookings. The early bird price has finished but
you should get on with your bookings. Bookings for
shirts and other merchandise will cut off on 20th
August to allow manufacture of the products. With
Trybooking.com, you can make separate transac"ons for the merchandise from the other event "ckets if you wish to spread the impact to your wallet!

Or how to make a 4 hour trip take 50 days
This trip was not a Rail trip with the trains being only
part of the overall trip.
Duluth MN to Mt Rushmore SD 13-15 /9/2014
Leaving Duluth we travelled along Hwy 35 before
turning of onto Hwy 23 for St. Cloud MN we had not
seen any rail traffic at this stage. As we approached
the South Dakota border at Pipestone we saw our
first couple of trains a BNSF Hopper train with 3 GE’s
and a short line GSW loco at the grain terminal. We
then travelled to Sioux Falls without seeing any
more rail traffic. We stayed overnight at Sioux Falls.

LeD Sioux Falls the next morning travelling along
Hwy 90 spo9ed a BNSF train in the fields near
Mitchell so found a side road and took a couple
shots before it moved out of sight. Travelled along
Hwy 90 and spo9ed an elevator of on a side road
this was Gavilon Grain Elevators which is a fairly
new grain storage system in Kimball S.D. There
were two locomo"ves 1 an SD7 which was GAVX
444 which was an Ex S.P. locomo"ve 5293 the other
was BGCM 9970. Headed for Kadoka on Hwy 90
where we turned off for the Badlands Na"onal Park
the ground colours here a quite contras"ng one.
We have seen quite a bit of signs saying beware of
ra9lesnakes . We exited the Badlands and went into
Rapid City S.D. Here we saw a train with 2 RCPE
SD40-2s which were built as U.P. locomo"ves this
railroad is part of the Genesee & Wyoming Railroad
Inc. group which also operates in Australia. We then
headed for Keystone S.D. for a couple days. When
we visited Mt. Rushmore Na"onal Memorial they

Weatheringusing
painteffects
The Weathering Magazine (TWM) is published quarterly. I purchased my copy from BNA Model World
in Melbourne at a cost of $14.95 plus $4.95 for postage.
Last month I wrote about weathering using paint
effects and showed the effects on a vault door.
Reflec"ng the magazine’s Spanish heritage, there is
a page 3 girl with the topic index and there is also a
girl along with a weathered model in the centerfold.
This month, I will introduce a
magazine on weathering that
is published by mig Jimenez.
The index page is shown below.
The editorial in this month’s TWM discusses the history of weathering and how fads and the occasional

well-known modeler influence weathering trends.
Twenty years ago most modellers shared the same
basic pain"ng techniques, washes first and then drybrushing to enhance the details. For this reason, it was
difficult to stand out from the crowd and create something truly original. It was a "me that very li9le informa"on was available about modelling technique. But
today everything is different, and lack of pain"ng
techniques is no longer a limi"ng factor: we can add
highlights and shadows to our models, or apply more
effects on an item of rolling stock; we can liven flat ,
boring areas or create imagina"ve scenes full of life
and colour.
We weather our models for a variety of reasons: one
is to make the models more realis"c as the prototype
models are weathering from the day they leave the
factory; the other reason is so our models stand out
from the crowd—they are different to everyone else’s
models.
Today, with the variety of paint, chalk and other
weathering products available, we can diversify and
show variety of modelling expression to make our
models pop even more realis"cally and not be just
another shiny plas"c model straight from the box.
I hope my ar"cles over the last few months and in the
following months encourage you to try new, different
techniques for weathering so that you find a niche
way of making your models stand out.
I also encourage you to look at what modellers in other fields such as military modellers, are doing to see if
you can adopt their techniques for your models.
