Numbers in Expanded Form
Programming Instructions
Three levels of activity cards have been provided. The Novice Level (page 13) requires students to match
three-digit numbers less than 500, number words, and numbers written in expanded form. The Apprentice
Level (page 14) requires students to match three-digit numbers greater than 500, number words, and numbers
written in expanded form. The Expert Level (page 15) requires students to match four-digit numbers, number
words, and numbers written in expanded form. Select an activity level. For a challenge, mix the levels together. (If
all of the levels are used together, more than one package of Colorful Cut-Outs™ will be required.) Copy and cut
apart the activity cards and attach each one to the front of a Colorful Cut-Out™. Decorate the front of a colorful
gift bag with an extra cut-out from the set and attach the Bag It! Label (page 13, 14, or 15). Copy and cut out
the activity directions (below) and attach them to the back of the bag. Place the cut-outs inside the bag. Assess
students’ skill mastery using the Pretest and Posttest (page 16).
Objective
Students will recognize and match three-digit and four-digit numbers, number words, and numbers written in
expanded form.
Activity Directions

Divide the class into small groups of 3–4 students.
Shuffle the cut-outs and distribute them evenly among the groups.
Have a student from one group read a cut-out aloud.
Groups should check all of their cut-outs for the matching cut-outs. (Each cut-out will have two matches.)
Groups who believe they have matches should read them aloud.
5. The group who read the first cut-out should verify the matches. Other students should each show a thumbs-up
if they agree.
6. Set aside the three cut-outs and let another group read a cut-out. The activity continues until all of the
cut-outs have been matched.
7. When the activity is complete, store the cut-outs in the bag.
Numbers in Expanded Form
1. Work in groups of 3–4 students.
2. Distribute all of the cut-outs evenly among the groups.
3. One student should read a cut-out aloud.
4. Groups should check their cut-outs for matches. (There will be two matches.) Groups
who believe they have matches should read them aloud.
