ART HISTORY
Art History is one of the principal avenues
of inquiry into the world of visual
expression. All human cultures, regardless
of time and geography, have used visual
communication to express, explore,
understand, and reveal their public lives as
well as their private lives.
Interdisciplinary and world language studies are
an integral part of art historical practice and are
highly encouraged in our program. Within the
degree requirements, students can develop their own
interests and strengths in preparation for the Senior
Thesis. Students are also encouraged to take advantage
of such exciting opportunities as study abroad
courses and internships at one of the many museums,
galleries, and arts-related businesses (auction houses
and galleries, art appraisers, and conservations
studios) in the LA County region.
The BA in Art History equips students with the
practical, methodological, and conceptual skills
required to understand this visual communication.
Students of art history learn how to be actively
engaged in the act of viewing: neither passive nor
naïve, but aware and analytical. The critical, visual,
and verbal thinking developed in the study of art
history is applicable beyond the walls of the classroom,
and can enrich every facet of life and learning.

Art History majors work with their faculty advisor
to design a program of study that reflects their
personal and professional interests and inclinations.
They have the opportunity to work closely with faculty
specializing in the fields of Russian and Soviet art and
design, Italian Renaissance and Baroque art, and the
ancient Mediterranean. After completing 18 credits
of lower-division course work, students take one
course in each of three areas (Ancient, Renaissance/
Baroque, and Modern/Contemporary Art); that
experience will lead to the development of a cluster of
upper-division courses in one of the three areas. The
degree’s capstone course is the Senior Thesis, a selfdirected research project that formulates an original
thesis. Graduates may pursue a wide range of artsrelated professions or go on to further training at the
graduate level.

Bachelor of Arts in Art History
2014-2015
The BA in art history allows students to explore the arts within a broad historical and cultural context. It is an excellent preparation
for graduate school and for art–related careers. A minimum of 21 credits must be in upper–division courses.
Do you have an advisor yet? All students should have an advisor to consult with in the process of creating a coherent program of
study and for advice on frequency of elective offerings. If you do not yet have an advisor, see the Art Department assistant to fill out
a Change of Advisor Form. Students should consult with their advisor on courses they plan to take abroad.

Inter/Multidisciplinary Cluster
Students complete a total of 12 units in a course cluster outside their designated
degree program or major. Students who complete a second major or a minor
fulfill this part of the GE program.
The Inter/Multidisciplinary Cluster provides students an opportunity to explore
an area of interest from an inter/multidisciplinary focus: four related courses
outside the student’s designated degree program or major. At least two courses in
the cluster must be upper division.
