Plan WOW Words (‘occupation not ‘job’) Accurate Spelling (Remember to use the ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’ strategy) Sentences for effect (Writing in short, simple sentences and longer, complex sentences) Use a thesaurus to find 10 WOW Words that you can use in your letter, these should be at least 6 letters long: 1. Write down any words that you don’t know how to spell in this column and use a dictionary to check them. Use a one-word (minor) sentence that you can use: e.g. ‘Passionate.’ Use a simple sentence: e.g. ‘I would love this job.’ 2. 3. 4. Use a complex sentence: e.g. ‘I am the perfect candidate for this television programme, my enthusiasm would make me the perfect candidate and I will have a go at anything that you throw my way.’ Punctuation variety (. ; : ’ ? ! ”) – for a C you need to use it all for effect. Not just full stops, commas and capitals. You can use a semi-colon (;) instead of the word ‘because.’ Punchy Paragraphs (Use connectives such as: however, nevertheless, firstly, moreover…) You can use a colon (:) instead of the word ‘therefore.’ Time You should start a new paragraph whenever there is a change of: Place Topic You should use quotation marks (‘) around a quote that you have read and want to repeat. You should use a question mark (?) at the end of a question. Use an exclamation mark (!) at the end of a sentence that you would say louder than the rest. Use speech marks (“) around something that somebody has said. or Paragraph Connectives that you could use include: However, Therefore, Nevertheless, Firstly, Secondly, Moreover, Whereas, Meanwhile. Second paragraph: Say who you are. Give the producers some details about yourself: What is your name? Where are you from? What are your hobbies? How long have you wanted to do this job? When did you first decide that this was your dream occupation? Third paragraph: Explain why you have always wanted to do this job. Give at least 3 reasons. Fourth paragraph: Explain why you would be perfect for the television series. Bonus Paragraph: Write a one-sentence paragraph that you can include in your letter and decide where the best place to include it in your letter would be. This might be towards the beginning or near the end. Finally: Sign your letter with ‘Yours sincerely’
