WP1 Undertaking a Photographic Study to Identify Different Real-world Scenarios Presented by: Gabrielle Cross Company Name: MIRA Ltd. PRISM is a DG Research project under the 5th Framework, G3RD-CT-2002-00848. The project partners are: MIRA (coordinators), CIDAUT, Daimler Chrysler, DalphiMetal, TNO, TRL, TRW, TUG & VSRC. Methodology • These studies were undertaken to determine how occupants sit in vehicles on the roads of Europe. • The samples were analysed to determine occupant longitudinal, lateral and upper limb positions. • Over 5000 vehicle samples were obtained from six test sites. •Two sites in the UK: Highway and village •Two sites in Austria: Autobahn and city centre •Two sites in Spain: Autopista and town centre PRISM is a DG Research project under the 5th Framework, G3RD-CT-2002-00848. Although the sites were selected to give approximately the same volumes and each site had a 2 hour run time, the final distribution was a little unbalanced: Spain Austria UK Overall 18% 40% 42% PRISM is a DG Research project under the 5th Framework, G3RD-CT-2002-00848. Child Seat Use Most children appeared not to be seated in a child seat, although this was very difficult to see in the rear of the car. • Front seat use of child seats was only 5% * • Rear seat use of child seats was only 14% * * However, this is likely to be an underestimate as some child seats, especially “booster” cushion types and dark coloured child seats may have been present but not discernable. Conclusions Primary purpose of study was to identify the postures that the volunteers should adopt in the occupant behaviour tests. After discussions, it was decided that various postures would be used based on a combination of both incidence and potential severity.
