They believe that those rights, rather than having any cost or responsibility, are items to which they are entitled. By virtue of the definition of entitlement, the recipient(s) need do nothing upon receiving the entitled item(s). In fact, the reverse is true. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness come only at great cost. Just ask a native of any country currently fighting a war within its borders if liberty is free. Look at the history of our nation. The greatest war fought on American soil was fought over the issue of slavery. Tell a 1 soldier who has fought in any war that liberty is free. If so, our military and civilian graveyards would not contain the mortal remains of those who died fighting for freedom. When we move those three unalienable rights into religion and avow that we are endowed with those rights by the special God that certain individuals worship, it creates a whole different situation. Wars have been fought and individuals killed throughout history in the name of religion. Is liberty really free whether that right is endowed by the Creator or not? Is life a right? Is the pursuit of happiness a right? And if they are rights, what responsibilities do they require of us as Christians? It is no secret that human beings yearn for those unalienable rights. But it is also no secret that we can strive our entire lives to feel alive, to feel free, to feel happy, and for some, it never happens. Perhaps our founding fathers understood better than anyone that those An “Open and Affirming” UCC Church Hear Ye, Hear Ye Page 2 - June 2016 The Church in Review: Trinity United Church of Christ Church: 4435 North Calhoun Road Office: 4440 North Calhoun Road Brookfield, WI, 53005 (262) 781-9378 Church Email: [email protected] Web Site: www.trinitybrookfield.org Office Hours: Monday:- Wednesday 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday - 8:00 a.m. - noon Sunday Worship: 10:00 a.m. Fellowship Hour follows service. Perhaps they also understood the great responsibility that we have as individuals, and collectively as a government, to ensure those rights. This country has existed for over 200 years. We are viewed by many as the land of opportunity, as the greatest nation on earth. But we still don’t have it right, and we don’t have it right as a government because not all individuals consistently commit themselves to strive ethically for those rights in their lives and in their government. We will never have it right if our leaders are not committed to equal rights and to freedom for every individual living within our borders. I love this land and have spoken in favor of her across this planet. But I do not look at the world through rose -colored glasses and fail to see that we still have a long way to go to guarantee those unalienable rights to all Americans. With freedom, comes responsibility. If that fact is not understood by our government and by our leaders as well as by the people, then those unalienable rights will never come. The mantra and the thinking should not be “I deserve freedom, but you don’t.” This country was founded on the principle of freedom for all, not a select few. July 2016 - Page 3 Did You Know… …what Trinity church member, who was described as humble and honest but very straightforward in dealing with people, was probably the most wellknown and respected community resident in Trinity’s long history? This is an easy question for many of our church members. His name was Franklin Wirth, and although he was never known as a politician, he was the first mayor of the City of Brookfield and served for 22 years (1954-1976). Franklin Wirth was born on February 10, 1901, the eighth of nine children. When he was 9, his parents became ill and he moved in with relatives, Henry and Ida Wirth, who lived on a farm and later adopted him and a sister. The farm was located on Brookfield Road between the old Village of Brookfield and Capitol Drive. In 1922, he married Dorothy Biedenbender, who lived on a farm across the street. The Wirths stayed in the area living in a small house near 184th Street and Milwaukee Avenue for many years. Franklin started an auto repair garage on Brookfield Road. He also helped form a volunteer fire department for the whole Brookfield/Elm Grove area in 1946. He became the first chief of that fire department. He then became an electrician and later an electrical inspector for the Town of Brookfield. Fearing annexation, Franklin Wirth was described as the primary instigator at the first meeting in November 1953 that led to the formation of the City of Brookfield. At that meeting, he was unanimously elected to head a committee that would study incorporation. In August 1954, incorporation was approved by 87% of the voters in the Town of Brookfield. In November 1954, Franklin Wirth was unanimously elected (receiving 2,282 out of 3,065 votes) to become the first mayor of the City of Brookfield. He subsequently served as City of Brookfield mayor for 22 years at a time when Brookfield’s population explosion was straining municipal services and school facilities. Franklin was known as the people’s choice, a man for all seasons, the father of Brookfield, and numerous other loving terms, but never known as a politician. He was 3 instrumental in helping to acquire a large tract of land (the Ormond farm) in the center of the City of Brookfield that today is known as Wirth Park in his honor. On February 15, 1976, Trinity Church held a special retirement (from the Office of Mayor of the City of Brookfield), reception for Franklin Wirth, a lifelong member of our church. Franklin Wirth died January 4, 1991 at the age of 89 and left quite a legacy. Franklin Wirth’s daughter-in-law (Eleanor Wirth) and granddaughters (Lori Krueger, Paula Matthews, and Mindy Wirth) are current members of Trinity. All of Trinity’s church members can share with the Wirth family in appreciating the vision, the planning, and the accomplishments that Franklin Wirth provided to the Brookfield community. Bob Rohrig (Source: “City’s founder and first mayor dies at age 89” by Sandy Schurter, Brookfield News, January 10, 1991) Pastor’s Thoughts (con’d from page 2) They landed on Ellis Island and many became naturalized citizens. They came seeking liberty. They came seeking opportunity. They came seeking the chance to become whatever their dreams could imagine. Many still come to America seeking liberty because we are still known as the land of the free. It then becomes and remains the responsibility of every living American to ensure that our land remains a land of liberty. Celebrate the Fourth of July in the best way that you can. Celebrate freedom. Celebrate a good life. And celebrate that we are able to pursue happiness with probably more freedom that most of the people on this planet. Then let us bow our heads and give thanks to God for the land in which we live and ask that God might guide our leaders. Let it Be Known to All... Some of these are rather large and costly repairs. Trinity Dartball (con’d) Last year I had a really BIG idea for a BIG fundraiser to help pay for deferred maintenance items. And that’s how B.I.G. began. B.I.G. is an acronym for Building Improvements Group and the people in this group purchased numbers for $100 each. 75% of the purchased priced went into the building contingency fund, to help pay for repairs and improvements. Last year’s parking lot patching, crack filling, crack sealing and pavement markings is a good example of how this money is spent. Also the new lighting along the parking lot and walkway is a new improvement, thanks in part to the B.I.G. funding. I’m not sure what is the on the property committee’s agenda for upcoming projects, but if you’re a property owner yourself – you know there is always something that needs to be done. Now, let me share some information on the other BIG part – the cash prize. 25% of the purchased price of the numbers is given back in monthly drawings. There are twelve chances to win – isn’t that great? We’ve already had a double winner this year! If you’d like to help pay for building repairs and improvements and also have the chance to win a cash prize, consider this B.I.G. opportunity. Watch the Bells and bulletins starting in October for the kick off of a B.I.G. 2017. Janice Garens season; Mark batted .316; Dave batted .292 and led the team in runs scored (27). Semi-retired 93-year old Harry Kurtz played only one game, and we missed his knack for driving in key runs in close games. Bob Nuszbaum was on the injured reserve list for the whole season. Other supporting veteran members of our team were Dan and Kathryn Dierbeck, Kathy Immekus, Bob Rohrig, and Jean Schuster. New church members Chris Faulk, Meredith Lang, and Kathy Leslie joined the team for the last four games of the season, had some big run-scoring hits, and supplied some much needed energy and enthusiasm. If interested in playing, or you want to know more about the dartball game(s), please contact one of the team members listed above. We play on Monday nights (excluding the second Monday or Packer games) from late September or early October until March (excluding the month of December).— Bob Rohrig (reprinted due to not being printed in its entirety in last month’s issue) June's B.I.G. Winner is James Marx! Congratulations and thank you for your support! Trinity Dartball 2015-2016 Season Recap Trinity’s Dartball team had a disappointing season this past year, finishing with a record of 21 wins and 24 loses (third place out of four teams). Can’t blame that on the weather or field conditions. Injuries and ageing may have had some effect. But, maybe it was just Greendale’s turn to be champions. They hadn’t been league champions for at least the past 56 years, which is as far back as our records go. Welldeserved congratulations to their team. Trinity’s team was again led by our big four – Peter Grob, Eric Dahm, Mark Burbey, and Dave Mielke. Peter had the highest average on our team (.359) and most improved average (+ .054); Eric batted .356 and had the most runsbatted-in (25), which also led the league, and he was our only player who never went off the board during the 10 The Trinity Sign acknowledged Orlando’s Sunday, June 12, 2016 tragedy: Orlando, our Hearts are with you.” ANNOUNCERS July 3 Business & Office July 10 Growth & Outreach July 17 Christian Nurture & Fellowship July 24 Stewardship July 31 Property READERS July 3 July 10 July 17 July 24 July 31 COFFEE HOUR HOSTS July 3 Choir July 10 Choir July 17 Choir July 24 Choir July 31 Choir USHERS July 3 July 10 FIRST RESPONDERS July 3 Jean Gichert July 10 Jan Glasenapp July 17 Joe Halvorson July 24 Mike Hetzel July 31 Lola Rainer GREETERS July 3 July 10 July 17 July 24 July 31 July 17 July 24 July 31 WELCOMERS July 3 July 10 July 17 July 24 July 31 Meredith Lang Judy Nelson Judy Taylor Laura & Mark Whalen Diane Siebold Bob Thomas Judy Nelson Judy Marchant Eric Dahm Lisa Dennis July 2016 Volunteers Jean & Janet Schuster, Jerry Krainer Roland Perschon & Diane Siebold Bob & Sharon Thomas Jan & Lou Frank Ralph Zahn & Dan Dierbeck Lynne Mielke Jan Schuster Jean Schuster Lori Krueger Kathy Immekus WORSHIP LEADERS July 3 Christina Matthews July 10 Judy Marchant July 17 Judy Nelson July 24 Edith Heins July 31 Lynne Mielke GUPPY ROOM July 3 No attendant July 10 Kathy Immekus July 17 Arlene Preston July 24 Kathy Dahm July 31 Judy Nelson OFFERING COUNTERS July 3 Naomi Stewart & Dan Dierbeck July 10 Dan Rieves & Ralph Zahn July 17 Jay Preston & Dan Dierbeck July 24 Dan Rieves & Ralph Zahn July 31 Naomi Stewart & Dan Dierbeck Thank you for your willingness to serve Trinity church!
