states:
“We hold these
truths to be self-evident, that all
men are created equal, that
they are endowed by their
Creator
with
certain
unalienable rights, that among
these are life, liberty and the
pursuit of happiness.”
There are those who believe
that the three unalienable rights
come at no cost and convey no
responsibility
upon
the
recipients. They believe that
those rights, rather than having
any cost or responsibility, are
items to which they are entitled.
By virtue of the definition of
entitlement, the recipient(s)
need do nothing upon receiving
the entitled item(s).
In fact, the reverse is true. Life,
liberty and the pursuit of
happiness come only at great
cost. Just ask a native of any
country currently fighting a war
within its borders if liberty is
free. Look at the history of our
nation. The greatest war fought
on American soil was fought
over the issue of slavery. Tell a

soldier who has fought in any war
that liberty is free. If so, our
military and civilian graveyards
would not contain the mortal
remains of those who died fighting
for freedom.
When we move those three
unalienable rights into religion
and avow that we are endowed
with those rights by the special
God that certain individuals
worship, it creates a whole
different situation. Wars have
been fought and individuals killed
throughout history in the name of
religion. Is liberty really free
whether that right is endowed by
the Creator or not? Is life a right?
Is the pursuit of happiness a right?
And if they are rights, what
responsibilities do they require of
us as Christians?
It is no secret that human beings
yearn for those unalienable rights.
But it is also no secret that we can
strive our entire lives to feel alive,
to feel free, to feel happy, and for
some, it never happens. Perhaps
our founding fathers understood
better than anyone that those

rights, even if guaranteed by government, always
come at a great price. Perhaps they also understood
the great responsibility that we have as individuals,
and collectively as a government, to ensure those
rights.
This country has existed for over 200 years. We are
viewed by many as the land of opportunity, as the
greatest nation on earth. But we still don’t have it
right, and we don’t have it right as a government
because not all individuals consistently commit
themselves to strive ethically for those rights in their
lives and in their government. We will never have it
right if our leaders are not committed to equal rights
and to freedom for every individual living within our
borders.
I love this land and have spoken in favor of her across
this planet. But I do not look at the world through rose
-colored glasses and fail to see that we still have a long
way to go to guarantee those unalienable rights to all
Americans. With freedom, comes responsibility. If that
fact is not understood by our government and by our
leaders as well as by the people, then those
unalienable rights will never come. The mantra and
the thinking should not be “I deserve freedom, but you
don’t.” This country was founded on the principle of
freedom for all, not a select few.
These words are inscribed on the Statue of Liberty in
New York Harbor:
“Give me your tired, your poor,

Between 1820 and 1920, 34 million people immigrated
to the United States. Their first glimpse of America as
those ships rode into the harbor of New York City was

the Statue of Liberty.

Did You Know…
…what
Trinity church member, who was described as
humble and honest but very straightforward in
dealing with people, was probably the most wellknown and respected community resident in Trinity’s
long history? This is an easy question for many of our
church members. His name was Franklin Wirth, and
although he was never known as a politician, he was
the first mayor of the City of Brookfield and served for
22 years (1954-1976).
Franklin Wirth was born on February 10, 1901, the
eighth of nine children. When he was 9, his parents
became ill and he moved in with relatives, Henry and
Ida Wirth, who lived on a farm and later adopted him
and a sister. The farm was located on Brookfield Road
between the old Village of Brookfield and Capitol
Drive. In 1922, he married Dorothy Biedenbender,
who lived on a farm across the street. The Wirths
stayed in the area living in a small house near 184th
Street and Milwaukee Avenue for many years.
Franklin started an auto repair garage on Brookfield
Road.
He also helped form a volunteer fire
department for the whole Brookfield/Elm Grove area
in 1946. He became the first chief of that fire
department. He then became an electrician and later
an electrical inspector for the Town of Brookfield.
Fearing annexation, Franklin Wirth was described as
the primary instigator at the first meeting in
November 1953 that led to the formation of the City
of Brookfield. At that meeting, he was unanimously
elected to head a committee that would study
incorporation. In August 1954, incorporation was
approved by 87% of the voters in the Town of
Brookfield. In November 1954, Franklin Wirth was
unanimously elected (receiving 2,282 out of 3,065
votes) to become the first mayor of the City of
Brookfield. He subsequently served as City of
Brookfield mayor for 22 years at a time when
Brookfield’s population explosion was straining
municipal services and school facilities. Franklin was
known as the people’s choice, a man for all seasons,
the father of Brookfield, and numerous other loving
terms, but never known as a politician. He was

instrumental in helping to acquire a large tract of
land (the Ormond farm) in the center of the City
of Brookfield that today is known as Wirth Park in
his honor. On February 15, 1976, Trinity Church
held a special retirement (from the Office of
Mayor of the City of Brookfield), reception for
Franklin Wirth, a lifelong member of our church.
Franklin Wirth died January 4, 1991 at the age of
89 and left quite a legacy.
Franklin Wirth’s daughter-in-law (Eleanor Wirth)
and granddaughters (Lori Krueger, Paula
Matthews, and Mindy Wirth) are current
members of Trinity. All of Trinity’s church
members can share with the Wirth family in
appreciating the vision, the planning, and the
accomplishments that Franklin Wirth provided to
the Brookfield community.

They landed on Ellis Island and many became
naturalized citizens. They came seeking liberty.
They came seeking opportunity. They came
seeking the chance to become whatever their
dreams could imagine. Many still come to America
seeking liberty because we are still known as the
land of the free. It then becomes and remains the
responsibility of every living American to ensure
that our land remains a land of liberty.
Celebrate the Fourth of July in the best way that
you can. Celebrate freedom. Celebrate a good life.
And celebrate that we are able to pursue
happiness with probably more freedom that most
of the people on this planet. Then let us bow our
heads and give thanks to
God for the land in
which we live and ask
that God might guide
our leaders.

The Exploratory East Wing Task Force
The East Wing Task Force have begun meeting. The following members have
volunteered their time and talent to serve as an investigative group with regard to
selling the East Wing:
Melissa Clark, Judy Colegrove, Pastor Jan, Janice Garens, Marlene Helinski (a
committee chairperson) Mike Hetzel, Lola Krainer (recording secretary), Pat
Matthews (a committee chairperson) Dave Mielke, Bob Stanley, Naomi Stewart,
Sharon Thomas (a committee chairperson).
Future meetings will normally be held on Sundays at 11:15. Should you be interested in joining this group,
please attend the next meeting or contact any of the chairpersons for more information.

Trinity members and friends are provided with
special weekly envelopes to guarantee that
their financial offerings are recorded as charitable donations for tax purposes. If you wish to
have your donations to Trinity recorded for tax
purposes; but do not receive these giving envelopes, please talk to Marlene Helinski or Jean
Gichert and arrangements can be made to handle this for you.

Undy 500
Crew Chief Dave and his Pit Crew Lynne,
Sharon and Bob brought the Trinity
Trekker to the Finish Line at the Guest House on May
26 to complete the 4th Annual Undy 500.Through the
generosity of Trinity’s members, 252 underwear
items were donated to homeless men who participate
in the Guest House programs. This was Trinity’s third
entry into the 500 and our largest donation. We hope
to outdo ourselves again next year. Thanks from the
Mission committee to all who donated!

“Caught in the Act”

acolytes each week – great job girls! We love and
appreciate all that you do!
Trinity’s Sunday morning Counters – each Sunday
morning this small group of people diligently process
the treasure that members and friends of Trinity share
weekly and prepare the bank deposit – we applaud
your quiet service to Trinity – Super job!
Mark Burbey – the person behind the outdoor sign
messages – Mark keeps the community updated about
activities, contact information, and items of interest
about Trinity – “keeping it brief” is quite difficult task!
[Editor’s note: Many people donate their time
making Trinity Church a better place. Listed
above are but a few — please let the church
office know when you see someone “caught in
the act” so we can list them, too!]
Hunger Task Force Stock box Building
On Saturday, June 4, twenty two eager members and
friends of Trinity volunteered for Stock box building at
the Hunger Task Force facility near the airport.
Stock boxes are provided to low-income seniors
monthly to make sure they have access to healthy and
nutritious foods. Trinity’s group worked together
assembling 520 boxes in 3 hours. Last year, groups like
ours helped the Hunger Task Force build over 105,000
boxes.
Our volunteers were: Eric Dahm, Kathy Dahm, Dan
Dierbeck, Kathryn Dierbeck, Margaret Emich, Chris
Faulk, Cassie Fosdick, Jan Frank, Kathy Haass, Joe
Halvorson, Bob Lannon, Natalie Lannon, Judy
Marchant, Dave Mielke, Lynne Mielke, Judy Nelson,
Roland Perschon, Bill Siebold, Diane Siebold, Bob
Thomas, Sharon Thomas and Mindy Wirth.

OUTSTANDING MUSIC!
Many thanks to Mike Hetzel and his band
for their part in jazzing up the Annual
Worship and Picnic music on June 5.
Participating in projects like this has proven to be
rewarding and fun for all involved.
The Choir will resume rehearsals at 8:30
a.m. on Sunday, August 28. Contact Mike

Blossoms for Sunday Mornings
Just a note to let everyone know there is
a flower sign-up chart that has been
hung up in the Dining Hall for all who
wish to give the gift of flowers for our worship time.
The Worship and Arts Committee thanks everyone
who added beauty to the sanctuary with their gift of
flowers so far for 2016.

Thanks to All!
Trinity’s annual outdoor worship service and picnic
was a great event this year. Outside and under the
tent at Trinity Church was a wonderful way to
begin the summer season. The music was outstanding, the weather was challenging, the food
was super, and it was a joy to celebrate this yearly
event with much joy and happiness.
Thanks to all who provided food and thanks to the
grillers – wow, but they are good! And thanks to all
who attended and brought family and friends.

Last year I had a really BIG idea for a BIG fundraiser to help pay for deferred maintenance
items. And that’s how B.I.G. began.
B.I.G. is an acronym for Building Improvements Group and the people in this group purchased numbers for $100 each. 75% of the
purchased priced went into the building contingency fund, to help pay
for repairs and improvements. Last year’s parking lot patching, crack
filling, crack sealing and pavement markings is a good example of how
this money is spent. Also the new lighting along the parking lot and
walkway is a new improvement, thanks in part to the B.I.G. funding.
I’m not sure what is the on the property committee’s agenda for upcoming projects, but if you’re a property owner yourself – you know
there is always something that needs to be done.
Now, let me share some information on the other BIG part – the cash
prize. 25% of the purchased price of the numbers is given back in
monthly drawings. There are twelve chances to win – isn’t that great?
We’ve already had a double winner this year!
If you’d like to help pay for building repairs and improvements and also
have the chance to win a cash prize, consider this B.I.G. opportunity.
Watch the Bells and bulletins starting in October for the kick off of a
B.I.G. 2017.

Semi-retired 93-year old Harry Kurtz
played only one game, and we missed his
knack for driving in key runs in close
games. Bob Nuszbaum was on the injured
reserve list for the whole season. Other
supporting veteran members of our team
were Dan and Kathryn Dierbeck, Kathy
Immekus, Bob Rohrig, and Jean Schuster.
New church members Chris Faulk, Meredith Lang, and Kathy Leslie joined the
team for the last four games of the season,
had some big run-scoring hits, and supplied some much needed energy and enthusiasm.

know more about the dartball game(s),

listed above. We play on Monday nights
(excluding the second Monday or Packer
games) from late September or early October until March (excluding the month of

Trinity Dartball 2015-2016 Season Recap
Trinity’s Dartball team had a disappointing season this past
year, finishing with a record of 21 wins and 24 loses (third
place out of four teams). Can’t blame that on the weather
or field conditions. Injuries and ageing may have had some
effect. But, maybe it was just Greendale’s turn to be champions. They hadn’t been league champions for at least the
past 56 years, which is as far back as our records go. Welldeserved congratulations to their team.
Trinity’s team was again led by our big four – Peter Grob,
Eric Dahm, Mark Burbey, and Dave Mielke. Peter had the
highest average on our team (.359) and most improved average (+ .054); Eric batted .356 and had the most runsbatted-in (25), which also led the league, and he was our
only player who never went off the board during the
