DIETS AND DRINKS
Until recently, it was widely believed that
reducing automatically meant giving up al
cohol as well as apple pie. However, thanks
largely to the so-called "Air F o r c e D i e t " (the
low-carbohydrate diet that permits drinking),
the old theory has been modified greatly. Now,
unless alcohol is forbidden for medical rea
sons, most doctors will agree that you can
diet and drink. It is strictly a question of
how well you combine alcohol with modera
tion and good sense.
LEARN
ABOUT
LIQUOR
If you are like most dieters, you don't really
need a calorie-counter to recognize which foods
are your "enemies." You may have to check on
papaya or pickled pigs feet, but you know,
without looking, about potatoes and pancakes,
pasta and pie. However, few dieters are well
informed about alcoholic beverages. You may
suspect ( c o r r e c t l y ) that most liqueurs have
more calories than straight liquor, but you
may also believe ( incorrectly ) that an 8-ounce
glass of beer has more calories than a jigger
of Scotch on the rocks. T h e point here is sim
ple: in order to diet and drink, you must learn
the caloric and/or carbohydrate content of
wine and whiskey, liquor and liqueur—any al2
coholic beverage you enjoy. T o acquire that
knowledge, study this book carefully (in par
ticular, pages 5 7 - 6 1 ) ; carry it with you wher
ever you go.
LEARN
ABOUT
YOURSELF
As you may know from past experience, it
isn't diets that fail; it's the people who go on
them. In most cases, the reason for this failure
is emotional ( n o t physical) hunger. T o put it
simply, people often "break" a diet because
giving up the foods they most enjoy brings on
strong feelings of resentment and self pity. I f
these feelings continue unabated, they soon
overwhelm the dieter's will power—and good
bye diet! • M a n y doctors believe that lowcarbohydrate diets are successful because they
seem less restrictive than low-calorie regimes;
thus the dieter experiences less resentment and
self pity. ( In truth, a low-carbohydrate diet of
fers a very narrow choice of foods, but the
idea that butter, mayonnaise, etc. are allowed
helps to keep the dieter emotionally "full,"
though eating little. ) I t is for this reason —
to minimize emotional dissatisfaction — that al
cohol is no longer forbidden on most diets.
• I f you're like most people, the pleasure you
derive from drinking is more psychological than
3
physical. A drink is a symbol—of relaxing, so
cializing, putting aside tension and stress. Very
simply, for most people, the emotions associated
with alcohol are as pleasant as the drink itself.
Bear this in mind while dieting, and you'll find
"psychological tricks" to help limit your alco
holic intake ( see page 6 4 ) .
L E A R N ABOUT
NEW
DRINKS
Considering the wide variety of alcohol avail
able, the average drinker has astonishingly
limited taste. Most people have one or two
favorite cocktails and highballs, a favorite red
and white wine, a favorite b e e r or ale—period.
But now, while you diet, isn't a time to limit
your taste. As you'll see throughout this book,
drinks vary greatly in their calorie and carbo
hydrate content; therefore you have everything
to gain (except w e i g h t ) by trying new tastes.
F o r example, instead of a martini ( 1 4 1 - 1 5 0
calories), why not try a Diplomat ( 8 1 calo
r i e s ) ? Instead of gin and tonic ( 1 4 9 calories),
how about a refreshing Dubonnet fizz ( 8 8 calo
r i e s ) ? You probably haven't heard of many of
the drinks included in this book, but they do
exist—and now is the time to try those that are
lower in calories and/or carbohydrates than
your old favorites. (Note:
S o m e bartenders
know as little about "unusual" drinks as the
customers—which is another good reason for
carrying this book wherever you go. )
4
LEARN
TO
EXPERIMENT
Open two cookbooks and you'll find two differ
ent recipes for chicken cacciatore; open three
books and you'll find three different recipes;
open four books, etc. T r u e , the basic recipes are
the same, but each author (usually a renown
c o o k ) uses favorite spices, seasonings, herbs.
T h e r e are also variations in drink recipes—and
this offers still another way of reducing alco
holic calories and carbohydrates. Experiment
when you mix! Stick to the basic recipe, but
make " d i e t e t i c " changes—use less sugar ( o r
none ) ; dry vermouth instead of sweet, etc. F i
nally, study pages 5 6 - 6 2 ; invent new drinks!
LEARN
HOW
TO USE THIS
ROOK
As you've just read, drink recipes vary some
what from book to book and bar to bar;
therefore, the editors can't guarantee that a
bartender's drink will have the same number
of calories and carbohydrate grams listed here
—unless you are the bartender and follow the
recipe exactly. B e a r in mind, too, that all
recipes call for the lowest proof distilled spirits,
and if a drink is made with a higher proof
spirit, it will have more calories. B e c a u s e
liqueurs vary greatly b y brand, t h e figures used
in recipes are averages, based on data provided
by major producers. T o b e safe, consider reci
pes and totals herein as typical o f drinks
served out." T o b e sure, tend bar yourself!

MIX IT YOURSELF
As noted before, drink recipes listed in the pre
ceding chapters are représentative
of recipes
used widely in taverns, nightclubs, hotels, etc.
However, as no two bartenders mix identically,
drinks imbibed away from home may have a
slightly different caloric or carbohydrate con
tent that you find listed herein. • Clearly, the
best way to keep an accurate account of alco
holic consumption is do-it-yourself bartending.
Mix your own drink, and you can b e certain of
its content, size, etc. T h e primary purpose of
this chapter is to provide the data you need to
total the calories and carbohydrate grams in
drinks that are mixed at home. T u r n to these
pages whenever you take over the " b a r ; " con
sider minor changes in recipes that will result
in drinks that have fewer calories a n d / o r car
bohydrate grams.
T h e caloric and carbohydrate figures used in
this book are averages, based on data supplied
by major producers and importers of alcoholic
beverages. L a c k of space prevents listings by
brand name ( e x c e p t for l i q u e u r s ) ; however
(again, except for l i q u e u r s ) , the editors found
that brands vary surprisingly little. F o r ex
ample, there is only a two calorie difference
between the 86-proof Scotch highest in cal
ories and the 86-proof Scotch lowest in cal50
ories. W h a t this means to weight watchers is
simple: Dieting may dictate a change in the
proof and/or type of alcohol you drink, but the
brand you choose will have little effect on your
figure. F o r instance, you can cut down on cal
ories by switching from 100-proof bourbon to
86-proof whiskey, but the brand o f 86-proof
whiskey doesn't matter. As you will see in this
chapter, it is largely what you drink, not the
brand, that makes a difference. L e t your diet
decide which type; your palate which brand.

DIET DRINKING TRICKS
Just as dieting doesn't mean eliminating all
foods, it doesn't mean cutting out all alcoholic
beverages ( unless, o f course, that is what your
doctor o r d e r s ) . You can diet and drink—if you
choose your drinks as wisely as you choose your
food. Listed on pages 5 7 - 6 1 , you'll find the
caloric and carbohydrate gram content of the
most common types of alcoholic beverages;
listed in this chapter, you'll find a variety of
diet drinking tricks. Pay attention to both, and
you'll learn that Prohibition isn't a prerequisite
to losing weight.
SWITCH
TO A LOWER
PROOF
T h e number of calories in any distilled spirit
is determined almost entirely b y its proof
(alcoholic c o n t e n t ) . T h e higher a liquor is in
proof, the more calories it contains ( s e e page
57 ) ; therefore, one of the easiest ways to reduce
drinking calories is b y using the lowest proof
of whatever liquor you prefer. F o r example, if
you've been mixing a martini with two ounces
of 94.6-proof gin, you can eliminate 2 4 calories
per drink simply b y switching to 80-proof gin.
If your diet allows one martini a day, the switch
to 80-proof gin will result in a "saving" of 1 6 8
calories a week; 7 2 0 calories a month!

PUT
PSYCHOLOGY
TO
WORK
As discussed in Chapter 1, the pleasure derived
from alcohol is largely emotional—therefore,
many diet drinking "tricks" are simple psy
chology. F o r example, if you enjoy a leisurely
drink before dinner, don't change your rou
tine while dieting; instead, change what you
drink. Have a highball with an ounce ( n o t an
ounce and a half) of liquor; switch from cock
tails to dry wine and soda. G e t the idea? T h e
"trick" is simply to reduce your caloric ( o r
carbohydrate ) intake, without eliminating emo
tional satisfaction. T r y the psychological gam
bits listed below, but more important, devise
your own. After all, who knows you better?
Cultivate
a taste for highballs;
drink cocktails
on the rocks instead of "up." B y making your
drink last longer, you'll b e less tempted to
order another.
Whenever
a drink is half gone, "stretch" it
further b y adding a handful of i c e .
Eliminate
fattening
mixers
b y substituting
water, soda, or low-cal beverages. Use an arti
ficial sweetener in place of sugar.
Satisfy the need to nibble with garnishes such
as cucumber, celery, radishes.
