OBJECTIVE
Students need to be able to think critically to understand proportions and scale. They
need to be able to recognize consistency in scales.
This assignment is to be completed over a 2-3 day period. The students have already
learned basic proportion concepts, now the goal is connect proportions, defined as two
fractions equivalent to each other, to scaled drawings.
GRADE LEVEL CONTENT EXPECTATIONS
N.FL.07.05 Solve proportion problems using such methods as unit rate, scaling, finding
equivalent fractions, and solving the proportion equation a/b = c/d; know how
to see patterns about proportional situations in tables.
MATERIALS NEEDED
• Computer
• Construction paper
• Scissors
• Flexible tape measures
• Mini Me! worksheet
•
•
•
•
Glue
Marker
Headphones
Ruler
INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICE
• Since there are a few important web links, the students should go to
www.ikeepbookmarks.com
o Account Name: QMS Math Department
o Password: qmsmath
• To review the basic definition and concept of proportions, each student will link to the
Proportions Review and follow the four steps.
• Then, the students will link to Brain POP
o Math
 Scale Drawing
• Full Screen Movie (movie will be viewed with headphones)
 Once the movie is finished, each student should take the pop quiz
• They may first review
• Or take the quiz
• Each student should review & quiz until he/she receives 8-10
correct (before proceeding they need to raise their hands and allow
me to verify their scores)
• Each student should then pick up a Mini Me! worksheet. Some measurements can be
done alone; some will need to be done with a partner. The students will be allowed to
utilize a chosen partner as needed.
WHAT STUDENTS WILL SEE
The students will see a variety of useful websites. The ikeepbookmarks.com site allows
anyone to access his or her favorite websites from any location. In the proportions review at
math.com, the students will get a chance to do some hands-on learning. They will need to input
answers and receive instant feedback regarding their success. They will visually watch the Tim
& Moby explore scale drawings. They will also listen to Tim & Moby’s thought process.
HOW STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE LEARNING
The students will then review basic facts and watch a video linking proportions to scale
drawings. Using this knowledge they will each construct an accurately scaled version of
themselves. Once they outline their drawings, they should analyze the picture to determine if
each body part is accurately represented. If they are satisfied, they can proceed with coloring and
cutting out their projects.
RATIONALE (WHY USE THE INTERNET?)
The Internet is a wonderful tool for this project for many reasons. Reviewing the basic
concepts, viewing the movie, and taking the quiz at his or her own pace allows each student to
focus in on any concepts they are struggling with or skim through the concepts he or she is
confident with. This type of learning adheres to No Child Left Behind. If we reviewed these
concepts as a class, there would be a few students eagerly participating and answering questions,
there would be some students quietly following along, and there would be a handful of students
who tuned out because they were confused from the beginning. This allows each student to learn
at his or her own pace and depth.
This lesson reaches a variety of learning styles, which could not be accomplished in the
classroom with lecture and discussion. The students learn kinesthetically by progressing through
the lesson by clicking to certain websites at their own paces. The students learn visually by
watch the movie and reading the sample problems and quiz. Auditory learners are also reached
because they have to listen to Tim explain Moby & his dilemma and solution. Finally, the tactile
learners are able to shine when they get their hands on the supplies and create the scale drawings.
They are also able to physically touch the computers rather than sitting at a desk listening.
Mini Me!
Name________________
Date______________Hour ____
You need to be able to think critically to determine if drawings or objects are
proportional. During this activity you will make a two-dimensional scaled drawing of yourself.
That’s right, over the next two days you are going to make a paper model of yourself that is ¼
of your real size.
First you will need to find
the following measurements:
Overall Height __________
Width of shoulders_________
Length of face __________
Width of face __________
Width of eye __________
Height of eye __________
Length of nose __________
Width of nose __________
Width of mouth __________
Height of mouth __________
Length of neck __________
Width of neck __________
Length of arm __________
Width of arm __________
Length of hand __________
Width of hand __________
Length of leg __________
Width of leg __________
Then, set up proportions to find the
measurement that is ¼ of the original:
Overall Height __________
Width of shoulders_________
Length of face ___________
Width of face __________
Width of eye __________
Height of eye __________
Length of nose __________
Width of nose __________
Width of mouth __________
Height of mouth __________
Length of neck __________
Width of neck __________
Length of arm __________
Width of arm __________
Length of hand __________
Width of hand __________
Length of leg __________
Width of leg __________
Remember to label!! All measurements should be done in inches!!!
Once you have your new measurements, use a ruler to draw the quarter size you on a piece of
construction paper. Remember the clues for creating a scale drawing from the brainPOP movie!
Make sure you use markers to properly represent your clothing style and features (eyes, hair
color, etc…). You will have two days, in class, to complete this project. On the third day, you
will present your Mini Me! to your classmates. You will need to discuss at least two features that
you measured and scaled results. Your grade will be determined as follows:
Scoring 8-10 correct on quiz
Accurate measurements
Accurate proportions
Scale drawing
Used class time well
Creativity/Self Representation
Presentation
Being a good audience member
Total Score
