to live the life of

fullest potential
Dia dhaoibh! Hello there!
Respite Care
A few weeks ago, on New Year’s Day, my wife and I took a drive to
Achill Island. It was a bright but very cold day, with intermittent
heavy, wintery, showers.
We drove past Kildavnet Castle, and I got out of the car to take a
photograph. Looking at the photo just a little while ago, thinking I
might use it here, I decided against it, and opted instead to use a
photo I took in July 2006 as a tourist, before I came to live and
work in Co. Mayo. This is a brighter, warmer and more colourful
photo. The New Year’s Day photo has a harshness, a grimness and
a coldness to it that reflected the weather on that day.
Maybe it is the photo I should have used, for it, also, is a true
record.
Both photos reflect our lives: sometimes warm and sunny and
bright; other times cold, hard and grim, with all the challenges that
chronic disease brings.
What both photographs show is our struggle to control our
environment, to assert our strength and our will, to succeed
against the challenges of nature and of life. And thus it is with
living with MS: we struggle against a disease that is a force of
nature.
The committee of the South
Mayo Branch of MS Ireland
works to help people with MS
in our area in their daily
struggles with life. We are
here for you.
New Year’s Day 2017
The MS Care Centre is the
only dedicated respite
centre for people with
Multiple Sclerosis in
Ireland. It offers shortterm respite care to
people with MS and other
neurological conditions.
There are still some
places remaining for
respite in Bushy Park
from 15th July to 22nd July.
Anyone is interested
should contact Mags
Ryan on (087) 2502 031.

Kilimanjaro Climb for MS
A young Castlebar woman intends to climb
Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania this March
accompanied by some friends.
She is Tracey Cannon, who just happens to be the
daughter of our Chairman, Liam Cannon.
Tracey’s aim is to raise €2,000 for the South Mayo
Branch of MS Ireland. She has set up a page on
everydayhero.com where people can, if they
wish, make a donation.
Tracey says, “I’ve created this page because I
want to make a difference. I’m inspired by the
work of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland
and wanted to support them by raising money.
The trip will be entirely funded by me personally
therefore any money raised will go directly to the
MS Society of Ireland, with the main benefactor
se to be the South Mayo Branch.”
If you know someone who would like to donate,
tell them to go to
https://give.everydayhero.com/ie/kilimanjaroclimb-for-ms and hit the Give Now button. Up to
the end of January, Tracey had raised €1,631.41.
Thank you, Tracey!

the South Mayo Branch of MS Ireland will
take place on the weekend of 4th – 5th
March 2017.
The annual Church Gate Collection is the
biggest fund-raising event in the calendar of the
South Mayo Branch, in which we usually take in
around 50% of the annual income of the
Branch. The money we raise goes into
providing services for people with MS in the
South Mayo area.

Branch will take place on Sunday, 26th March
2017 at 3:30 p.m. in the MS Office, Mosaic

WHAT IS ‘KISS GOODBYE TO MS’?
It’s a global fundraising campaign for MS. It’s a way
for everyone to do something fun, exciting,
glamorous, weird or whatever, to raise money for
the research and support that people with MS
urgently need. MS Ireland joins 11 other MS
organisations throughout the world as they
encourage the public to ‘Kiss Goodbye to MS’.
The campaign calls on to wear, dare or share to
fundraise in February each year: Get sponsored
to WEAR red lipstick (or anything red!) DARE: get
sponsored to do a Kiss Goodbye to MS event
dare. SHARE Share whatever you do with your
communities on social media. For more
information, go to http://kissgoodbyetoms.ie/.
