International Cartographic Association (ICA) has declared 2015–2016 as the International Map Year with the
objective to promote the importance of maps and Geo-information Technology in society. GIS Day is celebrated all
over the world, every year, on the third Wednesday of November. To deliberate and arrive upon the rapidly growing
Geo-spatial technology, its applications and its challenges in implementation of solutions a National Seminar is being
organized during 17-18, November 2015 at Hyderabad.
Maps, Satellite Imagery, GPS, and Photogrammetry, Mobiles, Web Portals and other emerging geospatial
technologies are being used to generate GIS databases and update Topographic and Thematic maps for various
applications. Besides, Socio-Economic, Demographic and Environment data and maps provide better insight into
themes that range from sustainability of resources to livelihoods and public health. It is, therefore, most important
that everyone can freely access, retrieve and thereby use maps and geographic information for operational use,
research and academic purposes. Also, it is important to strengthen Capacity Building and develop GIS education and
'Trainer of Trainers' (ToT), besides career opportunities.
The seminar will demonstrate the latest techniques to the practitioners, decision makers, professionals and others, the
importance of using and generating databases and showcase applications in a national and regional context. This
seminar will also deliberate the challenges in implementing GIS in India.
We are happy to invite you for the two-day National Seminar on the theme “Challenges in Implementing GeoInformation Technology Solutions” to be held during 17-18, November 2015 at Centre for Economic and
Social Studies (CESS), Hyderabad. The Seminar is jointly organized by INCA, Hyderabad Chapter, GIS India,
Geography Department and CESS.
About the Organizations:
Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) was established as an autonomous body registered under the
Societies Act in the year 1980. It is located in Hyderabad. Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) has
recognized it as a national institute. The Centre's research revolves around the economic and social problems.
Conducting interdisciplinary research in analytical and applied areas of Social Sciences, encompassing socioeconomic and other aspects of development, constitute the predominant activities of the Centre.
Indian National Cartographic Association (INCA) founded on 7th August, 1979 at Hyderabad, has evolved into
one of the biggest mapping organizations of its kind in the country. INCA is devoted to the promotion and
development of cartography as a graphic mode of communication. It has eminent cartographers, geographers, remote
sensing / GIS professionals, besides from industry as its members.
GIS India journal was launched in January 1992, with the aim of spreading awareness about the powerful tool of
GIS with potential for application in a wide spectrum of development sectors. GIS India has been addressing policy
and other issues, besides articles and news on latest trends in fields of Photogrammetry, GPS, Total Station, Remote
Sensing Lidar etc. GIS India also gives information about careers and courses besides company profiles and
comprehensive calendar of conferences /events in India and across the globe.
Department of Geography of Osmania University is one of the oldest and biggest in South India. Established in
1942 it offers M.Sc Geography, Geo-informatics, P.G. Diploma in Geographical Cartography, Town and Country
Planning and Ph D Programme. The Department is conferred with the status of Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) by
UGC. It receives assistance from UGC (SAP) and DST.
Venue of Seminar:
The venue (CESS) is located in the city, 6 km from Secunderabad Railway Station and 30 km from RGIA airport,
Shamshabad. The Centre is housed in the premises of 5 acre campus of Nizamiah Observatory at Begumpet,
Hyderabad.
Scope of the Seminar:
To deliberate the role and importance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology as a decision-making
tool.
To discuss the growing importance of spatial data and techniques in various applications and challenges in
implementing solutions.
To exchange views to access, share maps and geographic data / information for operational use, research and
academic purposes.
To focus on the importance of geospatial education, training, skill development and career prospects.
To highlight the importance of socio-economic, demographic, environmental and meteorological data in carrying
inter-disciplinary studies for societal applications.
