In addition to academics, December is also a busy time for many of Penndale’s students and organizations. SGA and HABIT are co-sponsoring the Toys for Tots drive this year. This year, their goal is to bring in 800 toys for donation. Additionally, the many music performance groups also use this time for their Winter Concerts. With the potential for snow increasing as we get further into the season, it is important to stay aware of the weather forecast for the area. In the event of snow, please be sure to check the newscasts, radio broadcasts or the school district website for updates on school delays and/or closings. Our concern, first and foremost, is for student safety! If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you for your continued support in helping each and every student to reach their highest potential. Thank you, Jason Bashaw & Annie-Laurie Robbins Page 3 PENNDALE PARENT NEWSLETTER GUIDANCE NEWS The December 2014 edition of the Penndale Guidance Department News highlights the Student Assistance Program through Northwestern Human Services. Did you know that our school district sponsors free mental health assessments to all secondary aged students? Student Assistance Programs (S.A.P.) in Pennsylvania help schools identify students who are experiencing behavior difficulties that pose a barrier to their learning and success in school. S.A.P. offers support to those students and their families. The core of the Student Assistance Program is a team of professionals who have received training from Commonwealth of Pennsylvania approved S.A.P. training providers. This team includes school staff and liaisons from community agencies, who process issues based upon state guidelines, professional standards, and policies and procedures adopted by the local school board of directors. Northwestern Human Services (NHS) provides two forms of S.A.P. services to the North Penn School District. First, NHS employs liaisons who provide assessment, referral and consultation to the district’s S.A.P. teams. As a part of a S.A.P. assessment, the student will complete several questionnaires and talk to a masters-level counselor about the issues and concerns that brought them to the assessment. The parent will be asked to complete a brief family information form, a consent form, and a release of information form. The assessment process generally involves an interview with the parent and a separate interview with the student. The family can expect to spend up to two hours completing the process. At the end of the interview, the assessor will offer feedback and make recommendations to the family about how best to address any problems identified. They will receive a written copy of these recommendations. Finally, NHS will send a summary of the assessment to the S.A.P. team at the student’s school, who will keep the information in a confidential file, separate from the student’s permanent record. NHS also provides in-school S.A.P. counseling services, which provide psycho-educational support to students in group formats. Psycho-educational support is not treatment, and is not intended to replace therapy or treatment programs. The masters-level counselors also provide consultation with teachers, guidance counselors, and other relevant school personnel. For additional information regarding the Student Assistance Program and Northwestern Human Services, please contact your child’s school counselor. Page 7 PENNDALE PARENT NEWSLETTER FROM THE CLASSROOM The English Department has been extremely busy, focusing on both literature and grammatical concepts and connecting these to student writing. Text-dependent analysis has been and will continue to be a priority in all three grades. Students are learning how to extract textual evidence, analyze that evidence, and reflect on its significance in discussions, group presentations, and individual writings. These analytical skills are essential to student understanding and intellectual growth. Seventh grade students are currently tackling Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol; eighth grade students, Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes; and ninth grade students, William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, George Orwell’s Animal Farm, and Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables. As the year progresses, all students will be focusing on two key types of writing: argumentation and literary analysis. Family and Consumer Sciences students are working hard in the areas of food safety, sanitation, and sewing. If your 7th or 8th grade student has FCS this marking period, please make sure that they have turned in their check for their sewing projects. Checks should be made out to HAAN CRAFTS. Our 9th grade minors have begun the cooking unit. They have made apple pie, and coffee cake muffins. Next they are going to learn how to make a roux while making potato soup. They will learn to dovetail while preparing pasta salad. While studying meat they will make a stir fry. The FCS wing of the school will smell great this marking period! Our 9th grade majors have been focused on some community service projects. Some of the students have knitted squares for Warm Up America! Our squares will be donated locally and turned into blankets for individuals recovering from cancer. All of our majors are making decorative placemats for “meals on wheels” and will be delivered this holiday season to older adults with a hot meal. These knitted squares and weaved placemats not only are used to teach the students about giving to others, but also teach the students how textiles are constructed. Page 8 PENNDALE PARENT NEWSLETTER FROM THE CLASSROOM (CONT’D) The Health and Physical Education teachers at Penndale Middle School envision all students enjoying an optimal quality of life through appreciation of and participation in an active and creative, health-promoting lifestyle. Physical activity plays a large role in the health, well-being and quality of life of all students. It helps to prevent chronic diseases like cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The new guidelines recommend a minimum of 60 minutes a day for children (ages 5-11) and youth (ages 12-17) to achieve measurable health benefits. Adults are to aim for a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity a week. Students should try and surpass the minimum standards, since the greater the variety, intensity and duration of physical activity, the greater the health benefits. During the winter months, our physical education classes are focused on “Lifetime Fitness" activities. All students at Penndale will be tested in Muscle Strength, Muscle Endurance, Cardiovascular Endurance and Flexibility. In addition to fitness testing, both boys and girls in all three grades will be participating in team volleyball and high impact Functional Fitness activities. In the classroom, our Health curriculum will focus on physical, emotional, and mental health. The curriculum identifies real life issues that are affecting our student’s day to day lives as we continue to face both positive and negative issues that range from leadership skills, decision making, peer pressure, alcohol abuse, dangers of tobacco use and substance abuse. Page 9 PENNDALE PARENT NEWSLETTER FROM THE CLASSROOM (CONT’D) The 7th graders are developing their skills with writing, solving, and graphing inequalities. We will soon be ready for our Unit 2 Test in a couple of weeks. Students can utilize the Chapter 2 and 3 Tests and Unit Reviews in their textbooks for preparation. We also enjoyed shopping and finding discounts on Cyber Monday by applying our proportional relationships. Algebra I: Students are completing Unit 2 on Solving Equations and Inequalities and a few other fun concepts. We will soon be starting Unit 3, which is about Data Analysis and Probability. After winter break, we will begin preparing for the midterm exam, which will be towards the end of January. Pre-Algebra: Students are completing Unit 2 on Solving Equations. Next, we will be working on Unit 3, which is an Introduction to Functions. This will lead right into Unit 4 – Graphing Functions. After returning from winter break, we will begin to prepare for the midterm exam, which will be towards the end of January. This will be the first district assessment of the year for Pre-Algebra students. Geometry In Geometry, students just started Unit 3. During the month of December, the focus will be on writing triangle congruency proofs. Students will identify corresponding parts in triangles and use one of several methods to prove a pair of triangles congruent. In January, students will study the relationships among sides, angles, and special lines and segments in triangles. The properties of altitudes, medians, angle bisectors, and perpendicular bisectors will be explored. In addition, classes will also begin reviewing for the Geometry midterm. The 7th grade Literacy Exploration classes are moving into the second unit where we will be focusing on elements of folk lore, fables and legends. We will also continue to focus on citing text evidence and analyzing text based information. Page 10 PENNDALE PARENT NEWSLETTER FROM THE CLASSROOM (CONT’D) 8th Grade Earth Science: Students will apply their learning of the formation, uses, and identification of different minerals to see how they form rocks. Their study will include labs that will help them understand the composition and formation of the three families of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Students will further understand the processes involved with the ever-changing rock cycle. This month 9th grade science students will continue to study matter and the changes it undergoes. Through engaging in laboratory experiences, we will discover that chemical bonding occurs as a result of attractive forces between particles, and we will observe what factors determine the types of predictable chemical bonds that form between particles. In 9th grade Social Studies classes, students are learning about city growth and immigration during the late 1800’s. Immigrants flooded America’s shores which in turn prompted the growth of cities which helped Robber Barons, like Carnegie, Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, and J.P. Morgan to become some of America’s wealthiest citizens to date. Together these groups struggled against one another to settle labor disputes in an equitable manner with lasting effects felt by today’s workforce. Students are examining these measures gained and lost in the building of an Industrialized America. Page 11 PENNDALE PARENT NEWSLETTER FROM THE CLASSROOM (CONT’D) 7th grade Technology - The students in Mr. Jayne and Mr. Thatcher’s classes have just completed a Graphic Design project which introduced them to the Engineering Design Process.
