About Mauritius
Introduction
Of volcanic origin and sheltered for its major by barriers of coral reefs forming natural, safe, crystal
clear lagoons, Mauritius has for long been a dream destination. Known to the Arabs as early as the
10th Century, but officially “discovered” in 1505 by the Portuguese navigator Pedro Mascarehnas,
the island was occupied successively by the Dutch (1598 – 1712), the French (1715 – 1810), and
was ceded to Great Britain in 1814 through the treaty of Paris. On March 12, 1968 Mauritius
acceded to Independence. Republic Day was proclaimed on 12 March 1992.

streams and waterfalls. Bordering this tableland are several mountain ranges consisting of diverse

African, European and Chinese – have settled on the island bringing in their culture, language
values and traditions. The country today is recognized cultural melting pot and is often cited as a
perfect example of peaceful co-existence of the main religions of the world.

French is predominant in everyday life and several oriental languages are spoken too.

Spend the whole day between sky and sea
On board the catamaran, you will sail along the charming east coast of Mauritius to discover the wonders of
this picturesque part of the island: its long sheltered lagoon, the blue and green shades of the crystal clear
water and the breath-taking coastal scenery, set against a backdrop of mountains. Settle down and enjoy the
sun and breeze on your face as you cruise past locations that made history in Mauritius, from the arrival
point of the early Dutch settlers to the naval battle between the French and the English navy that determined
the island’s fate.
AQUARELLE
Treat yourself to a dream cruise across the lagoon of the west coast
This amazing journey by catamaran leads to Ile aux Bénitiers, the essence of this dream cruise along the
West coast. Enjoy the beauty of the ocean, the perfect sky and the shades of green and blue of the pristine
lagoon while sailing through magnificent locations. You will be seduced by the casuarina-lined beaches, the
authentic view of Tamarin Bay, the backdrop of the Black River Gorges in the distance and the impressive
Le Morne Mountain, where runaway slaves sought refuge from their masters in the early 19th century.
ISLAND RETREAT
Escape to one of the most beautiful islands around Mauritius
If you are looking for some quality time on one of the most beautiful beaches of Mauritius, do not miss this
open-air retreat on Ile aux Cerfs. Stroll down the exquisite beaches of this 100-hectare island covered with
casuarinas, coconut trees and flowering shrubs. Enjoy the splendid view, bask in the sun and explore the
waters teeming with marine life. Not only is Ile aux Cerfs famous for its white sandy beaches and lagoon,
where you can take beautiful pictures, but it also offers a range of water sports and activities for a small
supplement.
COLOURFUL SOUTH
The South, an insight into the diversity of Mauritian Scenery
Trou-Aux-Cerfs, the dormant volcanic crater with its 360° panoramic view starts the day. At Voiliers de
l’Ocean you can watch local craftsmen make painstaking replicas of authentic 18th Century sailing ships. A
drive through the forest of the island’s interior, will take you to ‘Ganga Talao’ – a sacred lake to Mauritian
Hindus in Plaine Champagne. Further down the winding road of the Black River Gorges National Park you
reach a local restaurant with a breath-taking view over the coastline. Continuing through pineapple and
sugar cane fields you can discover Chamarel - be mesmerized by its magnificent waterfall and unique 7
coloured Earths. On the return journey, the impressive view is dominated by the iconic Le Morne mountain
and Ile aux Benitiers
CHARM AND FLAVOURS
Relish in some unique Mauritian flavours
Enjoy a taste of Mauritian Heritage with a visit at Les Aubineaux – a colonial mansion built in 1872. Drive
along tea fields to Bois Cheri Tea Factory to discover the secrets of tea before proceeding to the chalet for a
traditional tea break. Lunch is served at the Plantation house of Saint Aubin, dated 1819. Visit an anthurium
greenhouse with Mauritian vanilla growing among the distinctive blooms. The Domaine has its own rum
distillery – so rum and sugar tasting is a must. It’s then on to discover the exotic La Vanille Reserve des
Mascareignes where Nile crocodiles, geckos, monkeys & giant Aldabra tortoises and an insectarium are
found among luxuriant tropical vegetation.
