Richard Diggins Park playground replacement ID number Question 1: Think about the current playspace at Richard Diggins Park. What do you like about the current playspace? Theme 1 Please note that Richard Diggins Park is well loved and used in its' current guise. Please do not change too many things just for the sake of change. Four things I would ask you NOT to do 1. Don't reduce the lawn area ( it allows children to run and play ball games). 2. Don't increase the number or size of the two picnic tables unless reducing garden beds. 3. Don't install a toilet block or night lighting ( for fear of encouraging undesirable NIGHT time activities). A few border lights would be ok. 4. Don't make the park cluttered - keep the open outlook of this pretty park. Open space Don't install a toilet block Don't over clutter Border lighting 2 The open grassed area is fantastic Open space 3 Good location. Well fenced on 3 sides. Open space as well as well as play equipment. Open space Fencing Location 4 No answer 5 The trees and hiding places surrounding the playground Trees Hiding places 6 There is a great mix of open play space for kicks ball throwing, frisbees, running and hiding. There are plenty of older trees to climb on and new ones for eventual shade. Seating areas are ok. The staff take excellent care of lawn and trees. Dogg ie bag dispensor is never empty Open space Trees Well looked after 7 Grass, developed surrounding trees, feels intimate, good BBQ area Open space Intimate feel Trees BBQ 8 I love the lawns and swings 9 The swing and surrounds. Children like drawing with chalks on the surface which is great. Bench under the trees. Water fountain. Slide and climbing equipment. BBQ area 10 It is open and inviting. The green space for children to run about is excellent. There are picnic facilities for parents and grandparents to mingle. 11 suitability for frequent neighbour/family gatherings, i.e. combined play ground and BBQ equipment, drink water, shaded picknick area and seating play area in the pit, so shielded from the road surrounding trees for shade and where children can climb in the swings a lot of grassy area a predominantly neighbour frequented park, no mass visitors from outside the direct community. The park has a real community bonding function. Small enough to retain that personable spirit where people know each other. Open space (lawn) Swings Swings Open space Chalk drawing Shaded seating Water fountain Slide Climbing equipment BBQ Open and inviting Open space Picnic facilities Good for gatherings BBQ, water, shaded picnic area and seating Location of play area Trees Swings Open space Community bonding 12 Nice leafy aspect. Good grass space. Ease of parking if required. 13 Trees Open space Ease of parking (if required) No answer 14 It doesn't overwhelm the space that it is in.it is very safe for toddlers. The swings are good in that they suit babies and older children and even Nannas. Safety Swings 15 It is very close to my house and there are lots of kids around. It has some trees that the kids can climb. There is room to kick a ball around. Location Trees Open space 16 It is lovely but some extra park benches would be nice. More benches Question 2: What do you not like about the current playspace? Theme 1 Very little Nil 2 Don't like the metal playground If would be great if it was more natural like the theatre gardens 3 Not enough bins for rubbish. Need another set of swings. Not enough benches/seats for picnics and people to sit at. Outdated - metal playground Need more bins Need more swings Need more benches/seats 4 Play Space is outdated and does not utilse the space limitations effectively. Outdated 5 It is a bit old, too much plastic and metal. No sandpit or more challenging climbing structure for older kids Outdated - too much plastic and metal No sandpit Not enough challenge Needs more climbing equipment 6 We need at least one other bench please as shelter is dependent on time of day. The seats are used a lot by local residents and seniors to rest on their walk to and from shops as well as chatting. When there is no moon the park is pitch black - hence the terrible fright i got when one of two escaped dogs sitting under a tree attacked me and my dog. Walking past can be a bit scary particularly when a person's shape can be seen but we don't know if it is a vagrant or a dog walker. Doggie poos are hard to see without a little light. We don't want big lights just solar hot spot at edge and near bin maybe. Some people "reserve" the tables for a party early in the morning and sometimes even exclude locals. Maybe they need to know they should book if eg: more than 8 people? Large ater slides for parties are also becoming common with locals left feeling we are intruding. Also coffee vans are sometimes park across the footpath blocking those with disabilities. A recent auction crowd left 20 cups for us to pick up. Cleaning up their own mess should be inate but sadly it isn't Need more benches/seats Lighting (solar) 7 Small, easily overcrowded. Not enough climbing equipment. Could do with shade cloth. 8 Not overly engaging for my kids (3 and 5 years). A bit too simplistic - they run out of play ideas here and usually want to leave after 10 minutes 9 The table and chairs in the middle of the park. Previous to this being put into the park, people could use the open space to play 10 I do not like the small garbage container. It is frequently overflowing. I also do not like people who use the park for birthdays, etc leaving rubbish and/or ID number Needs more climbing equipment Shade Needs to be more challenging Tables and chairs take up too much of the open space area Needs bigger bin Don't like people using 11 12 crowding out the local residents. I think large parties should be booked and rangers should check the condition of the park afterwards. I also wish we had wooden or well designed children's play equipment. I also wish we had another bench at the top corner of the park for sitting. We do not need more table space. limited shading although the play area has served our young family well, for older children it has become a bit boring and outdated Old, outdated equipment. No shade sails. Small and limited age range catered for. 13 park for parties and leaving rubbish Outdated Need more benches/seats Shade Needs to be more challenging Outdated – old Shade Needs to be more challenging No answer 14 It doesn't have much to suit children over about 4 years of age. It doesn't really do much to enhance development of motor skills in children over about 2 or 3. Needs to be more challenging Needs to enhance motor skills development 15 The play equipment doesn't challenge kids' strength as there are no monkey bars or chin up bars. So it's only interesting to very young children. (My kids were at the park every day until a few years ago). Needs to be more challenging 16 Need extra park benches. Needs more benches/seating ID number 1 Question 3: What things would you change about the current playspace? A little equipment for older children (to about 10yo?). Maybe a swing for early teenagers - maybe a 360 degree disc shaped swing? Maybe a small climbing wall that does not take up too much ground area PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THE PARK CLUTTERED - maintain the open / picturesque aspect. Theme Equipment for older children (up to 10) 360 disc swing Small climbing wall Don’t make park cluttered 2 Make it nature scape 3 Add additional bins and benches. 4 Bench mark should be the play space at Shenton Park lake which is very popular 5 I will leave the swings but will remove the rest, split it and create different area of playspace. 6 Please don't change the feel and space of our little local park. There is plenty of big equipment elsewhere. We would not like the park to be overcrowded We just need smaller things for the 1 - 10 yr olds who visit. The swings are extremely popular with all ages. They may look old fashioned but are the first equipment kids go for. Keep it similar Swings Don't change the feel 7 More BBQ area More BBQ area 8 More nature play/free climb play. Harder playground activities - monkey bars, rock walls, sand. Natureplay More climbing 9 Take out the central furniture as it gets in the way of play Remove central furniture 10 I would add a sunshade over the swings. A larger garbage bin and maybe an extra one for bottles and plastic. Shadesail Larger bin / recycling bin Natureplay More bins More benches Like playspace at Shenton Park lake (Lake Jualbup) I will leave the swings but will remove the rest, split it and create different area of playspace. 11 more interesting, nature based play opportunity, encouraging children's experimenting, imagination, resourcefulness with natural materials like sand, water, stones (dam building) etc. use of wood and other natural materials retain/increase grass area (no/limited rubber) 12 Make it larger. Provide more shade. Separate areas for differing age groups is good. More seating (chairs, limestone walls, timber logs) for adults that is close enough to the edge of the park that you can engage with your child. Slides and swings are great but more interactive/moving elements would be fantastic. The rubber surface is fine, but sand is not good. A wood chip or natural surface is good. Something that does not hide cigarette butts or other nasties like sand does. For younger kids, make sure there is enough for them to do apart from being lifted up to a high ledge and then have parents struggle to get/help them down. More interesting Natureplay Use of wood / natural materials Retain open grass space Limit use of rubber Make it larger Provide more shade More interactive/moving elements would be fantastic Separate areas for different age groups More seating for adults close to the end of the playspace No sand - rubber or wood chips is good 13 No answer 14 Change the combined slide/bridge equipment to something with monkey bars or ropes but still with the safe bits for toddlers 15 16 ID number I would change the combined slide /bridge equipment to something with maybe some monkey bars or ropes but still with the safe bits for toddlers. Not easy Iknow I would add some equipment that both older and younger kids can use: specifically monkey bars (a two way/crossroad set like the Funky Monkey bars brand, with ladder up the side so younger kids can reach), a trapeze, a rope to climb, and chin up bars at different levels. There are no chin-up bars anywhere around this suburb (used to be one at Subi Primary years ago) and I know lots of kids that love to do tricks on them. - it is one of those pieces of equipment that can be used in so many different ways (forward and backward rolls, hang upside down, even do chin-ups!). Kids love to challenge their strength and hold their own weight, and Subicare and Subi kindergarten no longer have monkey bars. I would plant something edible that kids can harvest. Maybe Enchylaena tomentosa. Because we lived in Germany for a year where the playgrounds had hazelnut trees, and the kids spent ages gathering and opening them. Even at Richard Diggins park my kids used to pound up leaves to make a paste when they were little. I would also make sure there are some dead branches to build with, because my 7-year-old and his friends spend a lot of time building things with the few sticks they can find at school. Add some extra park benches - replace the one which was removed a few years ago near the western entrance to the park, near the road, looking down over the park. That was our favourite bench :( It was used daily, not only by us. We saw in Adelaide they are installing park benches at right angles to each other so people can sit on these benches and talk to each other. Excellent idea. Thanks :) Equipment both older and younger kids can use Monkey bars, a trapeze, a rope to climb, and chin up bars at different levels Nature play – Dead branches to build with Plant something edible that kids can harvest Add extra park benches Question 4: What are your children’s favourite things to do when you are visiting playgrounds? Do not make it to tidy either, allow nature to be part of the playspace too. 6 it's is a fantastic local park. Please don't overdo it!! thanks 7 No answer 8 No answer 9 Very glad you are consulting with people who use the park this time 10 No answer 11 please retain the direct neighbourhood community bonding function of the park (play, BBQ/picknick) by improving and modernising the current set-up but not growing it into something huge 12 Please make sure there is a water fountain and a bin for rubbish. 13 Rather than just small children, how about a basket ball ring and some public exercise equipment for the grown ups? 14 I trust you to replace the playground thoughtfully, Subiaco parks have been done well. Richard Diggins park is a lovely space well used by many people not just children. Please don't take up too much of the open space and trees. 15 I didn't see the September request for feedback but have been meaning to write a letter to council about the playspace ever since my kids started to grow out of it. I have 3 kids aged 7,9,11 that love climbing and monkey bars and would love a chin up bar. 16 The road definitely needs some sort of calming or slowing device - a child or dog is going to be hit one day. How about closing it and grassing it as has been done further down Park Street? That would gain a lot of votes for you, the council.
