Step 1: Get Organized
Step 3: Raise Funds
Develop a campaign plan, secure
CEO-top management support, recruit
co-captains, secure incentives
(parking spot, extra vacation day), set
goal (20% of employees raising
money at $200 per walker); finalize
March for Babies day activities
(company picnic or team tent).
Encourage each walker to reach a
goal of $200 by contacting family and
friends; promote friendly competition
between departments; track and
celebrate results; use online reports to
highlight top fundraisers.
Step 2: Kick-Off Your
Campaign
Join us for one of the country’s most
beautiful and picturesque March for
Babies events starting in Hugh
Taylor Birch State Park on Sunrise
Boulevard and continuing down
scenic A1A and Fort Lauderdale’s
world-famous beaches.

Recruit a team ambassador to help
inspire your team; organize a
company kick-off rally with CEO, team
ambassador or March of Dimes
representative; ask CEO to sign a
company-wide e-mail or memo
encourage fundraising; use voicemail,
e-mail, memos and bulletin boards to
encourage sign-ups; update your
company’s online team page.
Signing up, managing your team and
monitoring your team’s progress is easy
to do. At marchforbabies.org, you’ll find
everything you need to help your team
succeed. In a case study of walkers
raising funds online versus wraparound
focused fundraising (canisters, raffles,
bake sales, cutouts, etc.), the online
focus raised $12,500 (50 walkers @
$250 online average) and the wraparound raised $3,065. Raising online is
the best strategy. E-mail your family,
friends and colleagues and get them
involved with you today.
Step 4: Organize Final Stretch
Send last minute reminders to team;
arrange to submit cash and check
donations on Bank Day to local March
of Dimes office; obtain company signsbanners to promote the team at the
event.
Step 5: Share Your
Appreciation
Send thank-you notes to everyone;
share photos; praise the team in your
newsletter and local newspapers.

Broward Launches Family Council for 2011 March for Babies
Family teams are at the heart of the March of
Dimes’ mission so it’s no surprise family teams
are also front and center at March for Babies.
This year, the Broward Division once again
formed a Family Team Council to plan and lead
its family team activities during its largest
fundraiser of the year.
“Go online! I really took advantage
of the tools at marchforbabies.org.
I used the dashboard to invite team
members, ask for donations and
send thank you notes. And I used
the Facebook application to reach
out to even more people!”
The average family team walker
raises $300. Here are some great
examples to accomplish this.
Start with your own $25 donation
Ask four friends for $25
$100
Ask two family members for $20
Ask a grandparent for $25
Ask four co-workers for $10
Ask three neighbors for $10

several years and wanted to continue to support and lead our local efforts
for stronger and healthier babies. I applaud and thank them for taking on
this important role and I invite others to join them.”

Be sure to use offline fundraising in combination
with online as some people prefer being
approached in person.

While much of the focus in pregnancy occurs after conception, a woman
having a healthy lifestyle and making good choices for her own body
before conception is also very important to a healthy birth outcome.
The Center for Diseases Control emphasizes preconception care to
reduce risk factors for poor pregnancy outcomes and has identified the
interconception period - the time between the end of one pregnancy and
the conception of the next - as being a very important part of the
preconception care framework.
March of Dimes is supporting projects that provide interconception
care
for
high-risk
women
in
Florida.
Women with a previous
poor birth outcome are
contacted while their
babies are still in
neonatal intensive care
units, and supported for
12 months postpartum.

outcomes.
Every woman can
take steps to increase
her chances of having a healthy baby. Taking a multi-vitamin with 400 mcg
of folic acid every day prior to conception can reduce the risk of having a
baby with a defect of the brain or spine. Additional steps include eating
well and maintaining a healthy body weight, avoiding alcohol, and quitting
smoking. These are interventions we have come to call preconception
care. The take home message for women is, “Be as healthy as you can be
before pregnancy.”
