STEPPING UP,
STEPPING FORWARD
As medical care becomes increasingly
commercialized and market-driven in our
country, it becomes ever more important that
not-for-profit, community-owned hospitals
and related services remember and reflect
upon our responsibility to our communities—
and renew our commitment while finding
new ways to fulfill that obligation. Part of
that commitment, of course, is providing
the best care possible. Today, more than ever
before, that kind of care involves advanced
levels of technology, staffing, training, equipment, and facilities.
These realities have afforded Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center the opportunity
to step up and step forward as the healthcare
leader within our community.
Stepping up means working actively to
meet our role in maintaining the health of
our community. Change in our society no
longer allows us—if it ever did—to sit back
and wait for members of the community to
seek us out. It is part of our responsibility to
work tirelessly to identify health-related problems and work just as hard to solve them; to
keep marginal health from becoming poor
health; to keep difficult circumstances from
becoming impossible.
Stepping forward means moving boldly
into the future of medical technology and
clinical advancements. We must make every
effort to stay abreast of developments and
ride the wave of change rather than being
overwhelmed by it. It is a difficult task. And
it is an increasingly expensive one. But these
are steps we must take if we are to provide
the high level of care for which we are known
and that our communities deserve.
Quantifying how hard we are working
to meet our obligation to our community is
challenging. It is often nebulous and difficult
to measure. There are indicators, however.
Nationally, Solucient Institute provides one of
those indicators through its “100 Top Hospitals” program. Based on past performance in
these surveys, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center is now designated a “Benchmark
Hospital.” As one of only 77 hospitals nationwide to achieve this recognition, our status as
a “100 Top Hospital” in four annual surveys
earns us the right to be held up as an example
of quality to which other hospitals can aspire.
One of many examples of meeting our
responsibility includes the community search

Other highlights of the past year related
to JCAHO compliance included the “Tracer”
survey methodology, which analyzes performance from a patient’s perspective, and evaluates a hospital visit or stay as a process, rather
than as an isolated snapshot. These selfassessments, which measure patient perceptions as well as hospital performance, should
prove valuable in helping us continue to step
up, step forward and improve.

A STEP AHEAD IN
TECHNOLOGY AND EXPERTISE
Medical science never stands still. No
single health care organization can possibly
keep up with all the innovations in equipment
and techniques and skills and abilities. It is a
task we will never complete—there will always
be one more seminar to attend, another phenomenal piece of equipment to obtain, a clinical subspecialty to add to the staff. Yet it is
imperative that we keep in step with the times.
While this continuous, relentless change
may seem a source of frustration, it is, in fact,
a source of inspiration and excitement—each
innovation enhances our ability to improve
the health and lives of our patients. And so,
we eagerly anticipate and embrace each step
forward along the path to better medical care
for our community. Here are a few of the
many steps ahead we took in 2004.
The opening of the Pomona Valley
Health Center at Chino Hills in 2003 was
enhanced last year with the unveiling of a
new 16-channel CT scanner. This amazing
piece of equipment benefits patients in many
ways, not the least of which is reduced scanning time. Most important, however, is that
the new technology creates images of thinner
slices of a patient’s anatomy, allowing physicians to use CT scans in more areas of the
body and capture more images that contain
more information.
Digital mammography is another innovative technology added in 2004. Rather than
waiting for exposed x-ray films to be devel-
oped, digital mammograms are available for
viewing within seconds. High resolution
monitors allow technologists and doctors to
adjust exposure, rotate, zoom, and otherwise
manipulate the image for sharper, more
detailed images. Computer-aided detection
(CAD), a related technology, contributes to
the effectiveness of digital mammograms,
revealing 20 percent more lesions than conventional mammography. Pomona Valley
Hospital Medical Center is the first area hospital to offer digital mammography with
Computer-aided detection capabilities.
Yet another related clinical innovation is
the addition of vacuum-assisted breast biopsies. Used with either stereotactic or ultrasound guidance systems, vacuum assistance

techniques. “Markers” can also

Touch” has earned 14 awards for quality
and content.
Customer service isn’t always confined
by the walls of our facilities—or even the borders of our nation. A contingent of medical
professionals from Egypt visited our Hospital
in September, invited by members of the
Infection Control Department when the
parties met at a seminar. The tour may have
been a spontaneous event, but the Egyptian
guests believed its effects would be long-lasting and contribute to improvements in their
own country.
Stepping outside our walls again, the
Hospital extended community outreach
efforts with the opening of a satellite Physical
Therapy Clinic at The Claremont Club. The
Club and the Hospital have also worked collaboratively on the “Heart of a Woman” program and lectures. This ongoing series focuses on teaching women about heart health and
how best to manage their risk factors, a key
component in the fight against heart disease.
Customer service is never complete. As
long as we have customers, it will be an
ongoing effort toward continuing improvement. But, we’re pleased to say, steps are
being taken…

STEPPING UP
FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH
Much is made, and rightly so, of Pomona
Valley Hospital Medical Center stepping up to
fulfill our role in the community. It is likewise
worth noting that it would be difficult—
impossible, in fact—for us to accomplish our
purposes if the community did not step up
for the Hospital.
To say it as plainly as possible, the Hospital could not function without our Volunteers
or the Auxiliary. The tireless efforts of more
than 900 volunteers in a number of roles
contribute in countless ways to the well-being
of our patients. The tireless fund-raising
efforts of the Auxiliary result in numerous
improvements in equipment, facilities,
and programs.
Among the many enhancements in 2004
resulting from volunteer efforts was the
opening of a new Dialysis Unit. The direct
result is four new treatment bays and a new
dialysis pump to better accommodate our
dialysis inpatients.
Other purchases that directly benefit
patients include mandatory educational
videos teaching parents and other caregivers
with babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit how to perform infant CPR. Both
English and Spanish language versions are
available. Also new to the NICU inventory
are 50 stethoscopes and a doll for use in
teaching infant care. Bilirubin lights for use
in pediatrics and four new wheelchairs were
also donated to the Hospital through
Volunteer/Auxiliary efforts.
…16…
Just as remarkable as the things that get
done are the people who do them. Several of
our Volunteers and Auxiliary members were
honored with special recognition during
2004. The Los Angeles County Fair recognized Phyllis Sievers as the City of Pomona’s
“Home Town Community Hero.” Nominated for the award by Pomona Valley Hospital
Medical Center, Phyllis’s 11,000-plus hours
of Hospital service since 1979 were recognized. Kristin Caldwell, a student at Bonita
High School and Junior Volunteer at the
Hospital was feted on KABC TV’s Eyewitness
News as a “Cool Kid.” Kristin started volunteering at the Hospital two years ago and has
logged more than 550 service hours. Twenty

Robert and Beverly Lewis Family Cancer
Care Center hosted a luncheon to honor the
“Gold Medal Volunteers” whose donated
time was equivalent to more than three fulltime employees. More than a dozen past
presidents of the Volunteer/Auxiliary organization—many of them still active members—
were honored at a Past President’s Tea party.
Fund raising is, of course, an ongoing
activity, requiring innovation and creativity.
New fund-raising projects are always in the
works and tried-and-true events are kept fresh
and vital through the hard work of the Auxiliary and Volunteers.
The popular Holiday Homes Tour made
a return engagement for the 35th time in the
past 50 years. Tours of remarkable homes in
the community, along with gourmet food, a
holiday gift boutique, tea and cookies, is a
popular community event as well as an effective fund raiser benefiting our Sick Baby and
Hospital Assistance Funds.
Also back by popular demand in 2004
was the Bunco Party. This enjoyable
lunchtime event featured instruction in the
Bunco game, socializing, prizes, and, of
course, fundraising. The “WOW” musical
review, held at Claremont’s Candlelight Pavilion Dinner Theater was another successful
venture. Parents and grandparents of babies
born at the Hospital were given bragging
rights with the ongoing “Baby Cutouts” fund
raiser. Available in pink or blue, the cutouts
could be purchased for a dollar, inscribed
with the favored baby’s name, and posted in
the Gift Shop. An early holiday shopping
sneak preview was offered by Robinsons-May
at the new Victoria Gardens Mall. A modest
admission—donated to the Sick Baby and
Hospital Assistance Funds—allowed participants store discount coupons, refreshments,
and drawings for prizes.

No matter the job, no matter the assignment, no matter the project, we can always
rely on the Auxiliary and our Volunteers to
step up to the challenge. We’re both pleased
and proud that the people of the community
are willing to help us—enable us, really—to
step up to our challenge of improving the
health of our community.

celebrating success
FAR BEYOND
ONE STEP AT A TIME
Space doesn’t permit a complete accounting of the steps taken toward accomplishment
and improvement during 2004. But each
accomplishment reflects the commitment of
many individuals for the betterment of the
people we serve.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit took
several steps forward in its capabilities to
serve our littlest patients with the opening of
NICU3 and the addition of ten new beds.
The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer awarded its highest possible rating to our Cancer Program and The
Robert and Beverly Lewis Family Cancer
Care Center.
The Hospital’s switchboard

the world and “adopted” a group of American
soldiers serving in Iraq, shipping them books,

shortage of nurses. One
part of the effort—the Nurse Investment
Program— paid off in 2004. Maria Olvera, a
Hospital Associate for more than 14 years,
used release time, a wage advance, and
tuition reimbursement to attend and
complete nursing school.
Nurse retention took on a different aspect last year with the return to the
Hospital of RN Lisa Skibar from a tour of duty
in Kuwait with the Air Force Reserve. Lisa graciously donated an American flag, flown over
Kuwait, to the Hospital upon her return.
For the second year in a row, Pomona
Valley Hospital Medical Center had several
nominees for the Press Enterprise’s “Caring
Spirit Awards.” We are honored to have
received awards for Excellence in Leadership
and the Patient’s Choice categories.
Many other steps were taken, and many
more will be taken, as the people at Pomona
Valley Hospital Medical Center continue to
step up to our responsibilities and step forward into a better future.

BUILDING THE FUTURE
STEP BY STEP
When it comes to adding or upgrading
the facilities and equipment that allow us to
continually improve the care we provide the
community, we rely on the Foundation to
do the heavy lifting. For a quarter of the
century, the Foundation has stepped up at
every opportunity to help us step forward.
The support of Foundation funds, and those
who donate and endow them, will become
increasingly important as we step into a
future faced with rebuilding our Hospital to
conform with more stringent seismic codes.
We are confident that, together, we will be
up to the challenge.
As with every one of the past 25 years,
2004 saw Foundation members and leaders
actively engaged in activities and events to
solicit the help of the community and to
honor those who step up with the help we
need. Their efforts led to the opening of
“The New Heart Room,” a cardiac surgery
suite in the Stead Heart Center’s Cardiac
Catheterization Laboratory. Without millions in Foundation funding, this technolog-

have been possible.
In a related event dear to the hearts of
our patients, the Foundation supervised the
installation of a “Donor Wall” honoring
those whose financial contributions made our
Stead Heart Center Cardiac Catheterization
Laboratory one of the finest facilities in the
area. The expansion of the Lab was the result
of the 2002 Capital Campaign, and the
installation of the Donor Wall completes the
project with much-deserved recognition of
the people whose generosity made it possible.
The Stead Heart Center enjoys ongoing
support from a Foundation endowment
fund. Each year, the Foundation-sponsored
Heartbeat Gala replenishes and even increases
the fund, assuring that a continuing stream
of money is available to improve the Center
as opportunities arise and conditions warrant. This year’s Gala—the tenth—attracted
a record 430 guests. A cocktail reception
kicked off the evening as those in attendance
participated in a silent auction, offering bids
on a number of gifts donated by the business community. Dinner, drawings, and
dancing followed. Proceeds from the
evening exceeded $84,000.
The event was also used to honor and
recognize the 25th Anniversary of the Foundation, with special acknowledgement of the
organization’s original board of directors.
Several members of that visionary group
were in attendance.
The President’s Society, a working group
of Foundation members, gathered at the
organization’s 2004 annual luncheon to hear
from C. Duane Dauner, chief executive
officer of the California Healthcare
Association. Dauner apprised the audience
of a number of developments in health care
in our state, with predictions of what the
future might hold.
Step by step, donor by donor, endowment by endowment, gift by gift, event by
event, activity by activity, the dedicated
members of the Foundation continued to
step up for the Hospital, our patients, and
the community in 2004. And those steps are
leading us into the future on a firm and
steady path.

Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center
extends its many thanks to Robert "Bob"
Walker for many of the photographs he
has voluntarily taken throughout the year
and are included in this Annual Report.
Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center
is a not-for-profit, regional medical center
dedicated to providing high quality,
cost effective health care services to residents
of the greater Pomona Valley.
The Medical Center offers a full range of services from
local primary acute care to
highly specialized regional services.
Selection of all services is based on
community need, availability of financing and
the organization’s technical ability to
provide high quality results.
Basic to our mission is our commitment
to strive continuously to improve the status of health by
reaching out and serving the needs of our diverse ethnic,
religious and cultural community.
