Welcome to
Newsletter!
our Summer
During recent weeks, many of you will have seen that we have been inspected by the Care Quality
Commission. We are happy to report that we were found to be fully compliant in all areas inspected
during this routine unannounced inspection and I received very positive feedback regarding our
“superior” service. We also received an inspection by the CCG and feedback was again excellent. I’d like
to take this opportunity to say a big “thank you” to all residents and staff who participated in the
inspections.
We continue to strive to make improvements in the Community and as such we are delighted to
announce that we will be introducing a new State of the Art system for medications administration in
the Community in coming weeks. Staff are currently undertaking training and we expect the system to
become operational in mid October.
Patrick has worked hard to formulate an exciting range of activities for the next few months – can you
believe that we are already booking events for the Christmas period? However, before that, we hope
you will join us for special events in September:
21st: ‘Art of Sunrise’ Exhibition. Open Day displaying art from all 27 Sunrise Communities with
Champagne and Canapés.
23rd - 26th: Dementia Awareness Week for which we will be organising guest speakers Monday to
Thursday who will talk about various aspects of coping with dementia as well as support and care for
friends and family. The week will finish with a Victorian Tea Party Event on Friday with singer, Hayley
Smith. Details will be posted out soon.
24th: 2pm Geology with Elderly Care Rocks. This is our second session with our geologist, Luke. He will
be providing us with bi-monthly talks for the foreseeable future—the last session was very popular.
We know that our recent art competitions caused much interest and were an undoubted success for
many residents living in both neighbourhoods. It has been heart warming to hear stories from several
residents who tell us that they did not realise they had a flair for art until they began living at Sunrise of
Hale Barns! Several pieces of art work crafted by our residents in our Assisted Living and Reminiscence neighbourhoods have been put forward to be part of the Art of Sunrise Exhibition in London. I
am sure you will all want to join with me in offering Congratulations to them for such an achievement!
If anyone would like to become involved in contributing to the newsletter, please get
in touch with Patrick who would be delighted to speak with you.

Employee of the Month:
Our June winner is Laura Titterington. She is our first ‘repeat winner’ of the year after being employee of the month in January. To
recognise her second achievement we doubled up on handshakes and
prizes (not sure what we are going to do should she win again!)
One of our residents,
Edith Tranter, quoted:
‘Laura has a pleasant
and helpful attitude
and she thoroughly
deserves her award!’
Our July winner is Doris Goulden for ‘Providing Excellent Service
and Assuming Best Intentions’. Doris thoroughly deserves it, a real team
player making her popular both with the residents and staff.

Wine Tasting with Majestic Pictures:
Cheese, biscuits and plenty of wine, what more could you
want? Our local Majestic Wines representative had plenty of
knowledge and guided our palates through a tasting of six
different wines. A very interesting and pleasant experience!
National Care Home Open Day Pictures:
What a fantastic and memorable event! After raining in
the morning the sun came out just as the BBQ was due to
start and kept shining all afternoon. After lunch we had
two choirs in from St Ambrose Prep School and Highview
School, Stockport, after which the Mayor and the Lady
Mayoress visited Sunrise to judge both the Childrens’ and
Visual Art Competitions. See pages 6-7 for more pictures.

Art Competition (as part of the National Care
Home Open Day)
The top prize in the art competition went to Genevieve Roberts,
who only discovered she had a flair for art when she started art
classes at Hale Barns when she was 90. She is pictured below
being congratulated by the Mayor, Cllr Dylan Butt.
The winner of the under 18s poster competition was William
Gregg, aged 11, from St Ambrose Prep School.
Ann enjoys a big send-off
from the whole Sunrise
team on the day she
departs to receive her
MBE.
On the 2nd of August we hosted Ann’s MBE party with
plenty of champagne, canapés and speeches from both
Diane Bardsley, our Deputy Manager, and Ann herself.
Below are some of Ann’s friends raising a glass in her
honour.

Animal Handling with Zoolab!
There was plenty of nervous anticipation in the run-up to this event,
especially regarding the tarantula! Many claimed that they would run
a mile as soon as the exotic animals were in our home, and it seemed
guaranteed to be a flop. However, as the pictures suggest, the parlour filled up, and we enjoyed a fascinating and also very educational
afternoon getting to know the animals with expert insight by Zoolab’s
animal handler.
After showing the exotic animals, our handler produced a very cute white
rabbit to finish off an afternoon to remember!
VICTORIAN TEA PARTY PICTURES
Thanks to Hayley Smith, who provided costumes and
entertainment with her son, Louis. We all had a great time
dressing up and having a dance! Our next Victorian Tea Party
is planned for the 27th September.
Summer Garden
Party Pictures:
We had another
great turn-out! The
event started with a
BBQ and some
drinks at 12.30pm,
after which we had
the fantastic ‘Silk’
choir in to perform
some acapella songs
for us. If you missed
them, they will be
back to sing for us
on the 12th of
October. Finally, we
played giant games
in the garden which
was good fun
(swingball, giant
jenga and croquet!).
Upcoming Events in September:
24th of September
2pm Geology with Elderly Care Rocks
This is our second session with our geologist, Luke.
He will be providing us with bi-monthly talks for the
foreseeable future—the last session was popular.
21st of September
‘Art of Sunrise’ Exhibition:
Open Day displaying art from all 27 Sunrise
communities with Champagne and Canapés.
27th of September
2.30pm Victorian Tea Party with Hayley Smith in
Reminiscence
As the pictures on page 14-15 suggest, the last Tea
Party was a huge success, so to tie in with ‘Dementia
Awareness Week’ in September we are planning
another one for Friday the 27th.
Notices:
Chair Exercise on Saturday morning: Janet’s weekly class in Reminiscence is now starting at 10.15am instead of 11am.
Regular Geology Sessions with Elderly Care Rocks: Luke will be
coming in bi-monthly to share his wealth of knowledge about our planet.
His next session will be on the 24th
of September at 2pm.
Sky Sports in the Activities Lounge: At the moment a number of our
residents watch sporting events on their Sky boxes in their rooms. As of
September some of these events will be on the Activities programme and
residents can socialise whilst cheering their teams on.
Gardening Club: In September there will be regular gardening club
sessions to mastermind our resident-driven gardening project. The first
session will be on the 2nd of September.
Blackpool Day Trip: Please note that we are postponing our Blackpool
trip to avoid Bank Holiday congestion. The trip will now take place on the
2nd of September leaving at 10.45am.
Resident Involvement: Are there any residents who would like to
contribute in any way to this newsletter? Sharing life anecdotes,
interviewing staff , writing articles or perhaps even writing a regular
column?!
Ann Johnson will get the ball rolling with her upcoming
interview with our one and only Paul Dean, the Dining Services
Coordinator! (see next issue of the newsletter)
Manicures Update:
The next sessions will take place on:
Friday the 13th and 27th of September at 9.30am

Gardening Club
Open to all with an interest in gardening. This session will
happen on a Monday afternoon at 4pm. Does not necessarily
require physical work, helping decide what and where to grow,
as well as sharing gardening knowledge and anecdotes would
be much appreciated.
Parlour Games
This session is run by our new volunteer, Sophie, on Thursday
evenings at 6.30pm. So far we have been playing Carpet
Bowls, Indoor Croquet and Giant Jenga.
